# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Deri? Don't Start It

Never start the motor. If the petrol is still inside that tank and the motor has not been started, a drain is almost always all it requires — and that's decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, throughout Deri and the remainder of Caerphilly, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

Our engineers shall explain what the next part is. Contact us — it comes before everything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

- Do not fire it up — and don't depend on it if it does start. That is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine fed diesel normally just can't run, and so the person stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, idles and pulls away without complaint for a couple of miles. It's not all right. It's eating into that fuel system whenever you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. That is why the car's ignition stays off too — switch it on and you commonly prime your system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for just those components.

- Do not tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies, and topping up clears nothing — it simply gives you a fuller tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A vehicle that hasn't moved is the quickest one to sort, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Mill Road? Hazards on, then leave the car there. An odd location works for us better than a started diesel.

- Keep your position prepared before you phone. A postcode starting CF81 9 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between a van turning up and the van circling.

- What was put in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run — those three facts decide the full job. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Much of this work begins at the pump, so a big part of it ends up completed there.

Still at Morrisons? Then that's generally where it gets done. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the station.

A forecourt is the one location it is caught before your engine has started.

Fuel pulled out of that tank and through your filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and the fuel lines along with the tank. That's still not a calamity, and we put it right where the car is. What determines it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you push it. Very much worth it.

Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

## Parts our vans cover around Deri

Deri is a village, and we are out to the town and to the villages near it on the usual trips: Tir-Phil, New Tredegar, Pen-y-bank, Elliots Town and Cwmsyfiog.

There are separate pages for the majority of towns in Caerphilly, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from that list tells you nothing about whether our engineers come.

Near a boundary, or anywhere the satnav misreads? Phone to ask rather than guessing.

The area the page covers appears on our map.

The vehicle does not need to travel to us. We operate over every bit of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Somebody will tell you to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and fix it later. Do not. A misfilled diesel Nissan Qashqai on the zig-zags by the local primary school is a nuisance; the same car fired up three more times to be polite is a fuel system and not a tank. Every restart primes the lines and drags more petrol through the fuel filter and into your pump. Stay put, let everyone grumble, then give us a call.

## Roadside breakdowns across Deri

Not everybody has a chance to pull in anywhere safe.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on New Road because you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Out of the motor when it is not wise to wait inside, beside it if it is.

Do not start up your engine to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mixture further into the fuel system.

Carrying on does the vehicle far more harm than a van heading out to an inconvenient place, and that's no problem for us.

Your Ford Focus stays where it is in the car park by The Bailey's Arms for the whole job, which usually runs like this. First our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since, because most of the work rests on those answers. The tank is emptied of the tainted mixture, your lines are flushed, and the filter comes off if it is a replaceable one. With fresh diesel in and the fuel system bled, the car is started and checked, and once it is running correctly you drive away.

## Run it already? Pull over, then check this

Here is where the local M4 counts, under 15 miles away from Deri.

A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the first safe exit, switch off, and do not start it to reposition.

On a longer drive — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors, and mention it when you call. It alters what our technicians bring.

Here's the full process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the normal Coed Cefn-bach call — a diesel Mercedes C-Class, out there without fuss and back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it escapes past those tolerances instead of building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the motor was engineered round. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## Where is Deri?

Deri is a small village in Caerphilly, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 236 metres. Deri has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterised by terraced homes. Deri is located near several other villages, including Tir-Phil, New Tredegar, and Pen-y-bank, and is approximately 14 miles from Newport. Deri is a relatively small community, with a population of around 974 people.

## What our engineers do when our engineers reach you in Deri

- We find out what got in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before quoting.

- We drain the tank of the tainted fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.

- Your system gets primed, on fresh diesel.

- When it's fired up, our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away.

All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Deri?

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is the same — never crank it — yet the problem is not.

Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal around Deri has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

The narrower petrol nozzle fits a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not sloppy. New places see most of it for that reason. So: topped up by Deri Library without thinking, in a diesel Peugeot 3008 you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone realises, and miles settles how much petrol reaches the injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Deri

One number would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- This is the main one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much that tank can hold.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is safe for our van.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

By now that tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and the mix goes into the filter, into the lines, into the pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that got close to Ysgwyddgwyn Methodist Chapel needs its system cleared. Emptying isn't the same thing.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Deri

## I am on a forecourt in Deri. Can you drain it here?

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this takes place.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the motor has run matters much more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been drawn through the system.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what moves the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores.

Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

## Still with your vehicle?

Never turn the engine on again.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off then keep it off.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.

Emptying misfilled motors, Deri and the rest of Caerphilly, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
