# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Derry

With the tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet started, almost every job needs only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Across Derry and the rest of County Londonderry, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Phone so our technicians shall show you what follows after that before you do anything else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Don't start the vehicle — and never rely on it if it starts. This is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel normally just cannot run, and so the person stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, idles and moves off quite happily for several miles. It is not all right. It's eating into your fuel system whenever you drive.

- Flicking the car's ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition off.

- Never dilute it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- A vehicle that hasn't moved is the quickest one to deal with, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Crown Street? Hazards on, then leave it there. An awkward spot suits us better than a started motor.

- Before you phone, work out your position. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting BT48 6 — that's what settles whether the technician arrives or circles.

- What got in, roughly how much, and if the car has fired — these three replies settle the entire call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

## Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Plenty of this work starts at a forecourt, meaning a good portion of that gets done on site.

The drain typically gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station? Given the station's consent, that is a place our engineers work, and often.

Before your engine has run — the forecourt is the only spot this gets spotted.

The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the key decide how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and your filter need flushing as well as the tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still sort it out where the car sits.

Attendants will generally chip in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Accept the assistance.

Starting the car over four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

If you've put petrol in the diesel Volkswagen Tiguan in Derry and you're now stuck at the local shops with a boot loaded with shopping, call us. Don't start the car again to leave that spot. We'll get to you, empty your tank, flush those fuel lines then put fresh diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at light throttle uses hardly any diesel, so those tend to be the straightforward ones.

## Do our technicians cover your corner of Derry?

The same rounds carry us to Nixons Corner, Newbuildings, Strathfoyle, Ardmore and Maydown as well as Derry, which is a neighbourhood.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all places in County Londonderry, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Phone and enquire instead of assuming, particularly if you're on a boundary or anywhere your phone gets wrong.

See the map for the patch included here.

Every bit of that is territory we serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never move the vehicle anywhere.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, so have both ready. The Skoda Octavia will have seemed completely usual on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that is the catch. Diesel into a petrol vehicle usually won't run at all: the driver stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, drives off like nothing happened, while your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning comes, because behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

## Derry: stranded where you pulled up

The chance to pull over anywhere sensible doesn't come to everyone.

If you realised after setting off and landed along the verge of Crom Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that is a common call for us rather than an unusual one.

Whether you remain beside the car or move clear of it turns on whether being nearby seems wise.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: restart the car to get to somewhere safer and the mix goes further into the system with every mile travelled.

We'll bring our van to an awkward location without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's a lot better than carrying on.

What we'll ask about is whether the trip there was short and cold, because that is where petrol is slowest to burn properly — and anything that won't burn can slip past the rings then into the oil. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Nissan Qashqai standing in the car park at the pub in the village carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing deteriorates as it waits, and so leave the vehicle there overnight and phone next morning.

## Petrol in a diesel, but your car has gone

This is where your M77 comes into it — over 50 miles from Derry.

A misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are normally a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Take the next junction that is sensible, stop there, and never restart the car to reposition.

It changes what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything approaching the under a mile to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

## Derry itself

Derry is a locality situated inland in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, with an elevation of 31 metres above sea level. Derry lies close to the city of Derry, with which it is closely associated, and is near other places such as Nixons Corner and Newbuildings. Derry has a population of around 2041 people, predominantly residing in flat-type housing. Derry is located approximately 382.5 miles northwest of London.

## Our call-out around Derry, step by step

- The answers change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.

- The polluted mixture is drawn out of the tank.

- What is left in your system should not be what started the problem, so the lines get purged and your filter cleaned.

- Your system gets primed, on new diesel.

- It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it's running correctly.

After that it is ready to set off.

There is no need for a garage at any point, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left close to the centre. For a diesel Dacia Duster whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Ring us, then let it stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the lines get flushed and not just your tank cleared.

## Derry AdBlue removal is a separate job

The issue isn't the same, though the first rule is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Derry page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Derry

Our technicians can't put one price on this page honestly, since this job is not one job. What moves it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and whether a van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

No warning exists for this, which is why cars in that position generally get driven again before anyone phones. Do not be one of them. The throttle went dead and your idle turned lumpy after a couple of streets, and the diesel BMW 1 Series is now waiting close to the far end of the built-up part. Sluggishness there means fuel that cannot build pressure correctly rather than an engine giving up. Turn off. Call us.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Derry

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Derry?

A big share of this work happens there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the station's consent our technicians work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town routinely.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through the fuel system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off.

It is fixable a lot more commonly than motorists expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no.

Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Still with the car?

The motor stays off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and parked, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Derry and across County Londonderry.
