# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Dobwalls? Don't Start It

With that tank still holding the fuel and your engine not yet started, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes right after the fill-up, and not by the amount that was put in. Throughout Dobwalls and the remainder of Cornwall, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Our technicians can explain what the next stage will be. Ring us — that happens ahead of everything else.

## The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Do not fire it up — and don't rely on it when it runs. This is the part drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel normally just won't run, and so the motorist stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, idles and pulls away just fine for a few miles. It's not fine. It is wearing out your fuel system while you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition be too. Diesel does two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it lubricates your injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime that system, which carries that petrol out of the tank then into precisely those components.

- Do not thin it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- A car that has not moved is the quickest one to sort out, and so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Havett Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. A tricky place works for us better than a started motor.

- Before you ring, have your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning PL14 6 — that is what determines whether our van turns up or circles.

- What was put in, about how many litres, and if your car has started — those three answers shape the full call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A big chunk of the job ends up completed at a pump, because that is where it usually kicks off.

The drain generally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Heltor? Given the owner's permission, that's somewhere our technicians work, and often.

Before the motor has fired — a forecourt is the only setting it gets spotted.

Fuel pulled out of that tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the motor is fired up and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines along with that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our engineers sort it out where the car sits. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

The staff will usually happily push it clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Diesel Peugeot 308. A few litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Switched off now, at Co-op Food. That's the call we like, since the question underneath it is about quantity through your pump instead of hours on the clock.

## Coverage around Dobwalls

As a rural village, Dobwalls has a frequent call, while the areas nearby go with it on the same run: East Tuelmenna and Twelvewoods, Treburgie and Treburgie Water, Doublebois.

We do come. Those names above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of towns around Cornwall, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Assuming is the thing to avoid, particularly on the border or somewhere your satnav goes wrong. Contact us to check.

That map is the area this page spans.

Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and the car doesn't need to move to us.

You will be told to shift the vehicle out of the gateway and deal with it later. Do not. On the zig-zags by Dobwalls Community Primary School, a misfilled Ford Focus running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Crank it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime draws more petrol beyond the fuel filter towards your pump. Let them grumble. Phone us.

## Stranded at the kerbside near Dobwalls

Not everyone has a sensible place to stop.

Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge beside Higher Meadow, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Clear of the car if it's not sensible to wait inside, with it if it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

However difficult the location, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that is much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

The parts that should be getting protected are wearing down instead, and your car gives no sign of that: a diesel on a thinned tank starts and drives off perfectly well. Try the drive home from The Highwayman? Not a chance. Call us and leave the Mercedes C-Class where it is.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 50 miles from Dobwalls, the local M5 is what counts now.

Lost power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Pull off at the first safe exit, switch off, and don't restart it to reposition.

Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

None of that is your engine failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it is why the normal Hoburne Holiday Park Doublebois call ends better than it sounds: a diesel BMW 5 Series drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, the idle uneven and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting parts it runs through; petrol thins it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built bleeds past gaps, delivery turns up poorer and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once your fuel is sorted.

## A little about Dobwalls

Dobwalls is a village in Cornwall, situated inland at an elevation of 137 metres, and is located near several smaller settlements including East Tuelmenna and Twelvewoods. Dobwalls has a population of around 1683 people, and its housing stock is predominantly semi-detached. Dobwalls is close to the city of Plymouth, which is approximately 17.5 miles away, and is about 204.1 miles west of London. Dobwalls sits within a wider rural area, with Treburgie nearby.

## What follows when our engineers arrive with you around Dobwalls

- Our technicians find out what was put in, how much, and if the motor has run. The answers change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.

- The tank gets emptied of it.

- Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later is not the thing that caused the problem.

- The fuel system gets primed, on new diesel.

- Your engine is started and checked to confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From there, you're ready to drive away.

There is no need for a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

We purge the lines instead of only clearing that tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already reached the fuel filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive really helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Kia Sportage parked up near Dobwalls United Church a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us then leave it off.

## Dobwalls AdBlue removal is a separate job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the engine stays off — while this issue beneath it is a different one altogether.

The protection a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up in its place.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Dobwalls page. Both are ours to handle.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Dobwalls

One price wouldn't be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much your tank can hold.

- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for a technician.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range.

For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Dobwalls

## Fuel drains on a Dobwalls petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a good portion of this work gets done.

Often, provided the site agrees: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our engineers answer on the spot.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off.

Driving is what moves the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable a lot more regularly than drivers fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It isn't a modification, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores.

That tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Standing next to it?

Your engine stays off.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

A still, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than drivers fear.

Draining misfilled cars, Dobwalls and the rest of Cornwall, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
