# Drax: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Drax and the remainder of North Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When the motor has not been started and the fuel is still in the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Ring us and then our team will show you what follows next before you try anything else.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Do not fire it up — and never trust it when it does start. This is the thing people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just cannot run, so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, idles and drives away quite happily for a few miles. It isn't all right. It is wearing the fuel system whenever you drive.

- Switching the car's ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition off.

- Do not tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Our team would sooner come to an odd place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to handle than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on Main Road, that means hazards on then leave the car.

- The van showing up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode starting YO8 8, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Have both prepared before you phone.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, roughly how many litres, and whether your car has fired. These three replies determine the entire call-out.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, sat outside Rawcliffe since breakfast? The day has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is idle. It was the run in that pulled weakened diesel through your pump. Ring us before you collect the car.

## Can petrol be taken from your diesel at the forecourt?

Much of this job starts at a forecourt, meaning a good chunk of it gets finished on site.

The drain generally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Carlton Service Station? Given the site's permission, that is a spot we work, and routinely.

A forecourt is the only setting the mistake is spotted before your engine has started.

Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the lines and your filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the key.

Push the vehicle out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they generally will. The next customer gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Moving it four bays doesn't merit cranking the motor.

Diesel Volkswagen Passat. A couple of litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Shut off now, outside Londis. That's the phone call we want, since the point underneath it is about volume through the pump instead of hours on the clock.

## Service in Drax

As a rural village, Drax has a frequent visit, and the villages close by go with it on the same run: Newland and Long Drax, Camblesforth and Barmby on the Marsh, Carlton.

There are pages for nearly all towns around North Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list means nothing at all about if we come.

Phone and ask rather than guessing — county lines particularly, and wherever the satnav may struggle with.

See our map for the patch shown here.

All of that is ground we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never bring the car anywhere.

## Stuck on the kerbside near Drax

Some people have no suitable place to pull over at all.

A common call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up on the verge of Poplar Court or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Remain with the car when it is wise to sit there, but clear of it if it isn't.

Do not restart the engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that blend further into the fuel system.

Pressing on does the vehicle far more harm than a technician coming out to a difficult location, and that is no bother for us.

Three answers decide most of the work: what went in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we arrive at the vehicle in the car park outside The Huntsman. After that the tainted blend comes out of that tank, the fuel lines are flushed, and where your Peugeot 308 has a replaceable filter, it comes off. Once new diesel is in and the system bled, we start it and confirm it runs smoothly before you set off.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has travelled

Your M62 is the road that counts here, and lies under 3 miles from Drax.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power ebbs away, your idle goes rough, and there may be smoke.

Never restart it to move it. Pull off at the next safe junction then switch off.

Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you ring. What we bring alters.

Nothing is getting worse whilst it stands. Whatever the diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Drax Cricket Club, it is doing none of it now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but do not drive it home to buy yourself any.

## All about Drax

Drax is a small village in North Yorkshire, situated near the towns of Selby and Goole, and close to the villages of Newland and Camblesforth. Drax lies in a low-lying area of the Yorkshire countryside, with an elevation of around 5 metres, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Drax is located near the M62 motorway and is approximately 15 miles from Doncaster, making it a commuter base for the surrounding area.

## What happens when our technicians get to you in Drax

- The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.

- Our technicians empty your tank of all the contaminated fuel.

- Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.

- Our technicians put new diesel in and prime the system.

- We start the engine and make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

Then it's ready to set off.

All of this is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very rare.

Why so firm about leaving the keys alone? Because the pump is before the fuel injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it gives off downstream with your fuel. Ring us. Leave the Mercedes C-Class close to St Peter & St Paul.

## A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Drax

The issue is not the same, though the first instruction is — don't start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal in Drax has its own page with the full story — including why it's frequently the more significant of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Drax?

One figure wouldn't be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that proportion.

- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and whether a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Drax

## At a petrol station around Drax, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big part of this work gets done there, so yes.

Often, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something we answer there and then.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Driving takes the issue along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate problem and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened.

Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, because our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

## Is the vehicle still with you?

Switched off is the way the car stays.

Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

A stationary, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than motorists fear.

Throughout North Yorkshire and around Drax: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
