# Drinkfield: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a second, and not for moving it: your motor stays off. Pause there.

The next few minutes determine it more than anything else: petrol in a diesel still unrun normally amounts to clearing then rinsing, right there.

Anywhere you are in Drinkfield, this is how things run from here.

## Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

Go through these in sequence, first.

- Keys out of your ignition. Turning the ignition on can be all it takes to prime the system, while priming draws petrol out of your tank towards the components it damages. Keep the vehicle off altogether.

- A bigger tank of the same mixture is all adding diesel gives you, because it removes nothing. So no extra diesel.

- Hazards on. If you are anywhere near moving traffic, make your car easy to see before you do anything else.

- Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, ask the staff to help you push it clear of the pump. Do not fire it up to move it, however short the way.

- The first thing you will be asked is which fuel you put in and roughly how much — and the receipt shows both. Keep it.

If you were still driving when you realised, pull over somewhere safe instead of pushing on for the services — on the A1(M), under 3 miles from Drinkfield, that means the next junction. Step one follows.

## Drinkfield fuel drain: has your engine run yet, or not?

One answer is what everything after this point rests on.

Not run, not even once:

- All the petrol remains inside that tank, and just there.

- A drain and flush, on the spot, is usually the whole job.

- No place is better, and it is why the first stage counts so much.

If it has been started, even for a moment:

- The lines and the filter already hold petrol pulled out of that tank.

- A longer run takes it all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

- The job expands with the miles — lines flushed, filter sorted, sometimes more.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, protecting the high-pressure pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line sits where it does.

Nothing is damaged by petrol that is only resting in a tank.

Move that petrol, though, and it wears the very parts that move it.

## Calling about petrol in a diesel from Drinkfield: what to have prepared

Whether the van goes round or finds you depends on a little planning.

- Where you have stopped. A postcode starting DL3 0 is the ideal start.

- Name the street — Whessoe Road or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.

- Car parks are located more easily by what they serve: say the one at Lidl, and it's easy.

- The make and model of your vehicle, and the fact it is a diesel.

- Tell us which got in — petrol or AdBlue — because AdBlue is a separate job, with a page of its own for Drinkfield.

- About how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.

- If it has run, how far and how heavily — and whether it has run at all.

- Whose motor it is. Some hire and company agreements want the owner to authorise this work, and that's easier settled before our technicians turn up than after.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not urgent, the car left at home with nowhere to be? Then works too.

## The wait for a Drinkfield fuel drain, and what to do in it

The wait is where well-intended help does the damage. Hold to these.

- Safety before your car. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself away from the traffic then wait away from it. If it's safe where it is, wait with it.

- Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's kindness: nobody starts it.

- Anything from the boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts that petrol.

- Emptying it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond your tank stays where it is all the same.

- Keep the ignition off — the windows and the radio too.

## When our van gets there: the fuel drain, step by step

- Fuel, volume, whether it's run: the replies set the job, and that's why you get a quote after them instead of before.

- Your tank is cleared. The tainted mixture comes out of the tank.

- If it ran, the fuel lines are carrying petrol that has moved beyond your tank — so they're flushed.

- Cleaned, or changed if the car has a usable one: the fuel filter is dealt with next.

- Priming comes after clean diesel is in.

- Our technicians start the engine only after fresh diesel has gone in and primed the system, then make sure that it is running correctly.

Our engineers stay until it is running on clean diesel.

It's very unusual for a vehicle spotted soon to be left with permanent damage, and normal use starts again straight away.

## Drinkfield, after the fuel drain: back on the road

- Once it has been started on fresh fuel, there's nothing special to do: drive normally.

- Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over and call us back.

- Hold on to the paperwork. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.

- Next time, go by the pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
