# Duffryn: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not turn on the engine. While the fuel is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet run, a drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, throughout Duffryn and the rest of Newport, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

Contact us before everything else begins, and you'll see what comes from there.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear. That's why you do not crank it, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part drivers get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Turning the ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition off.

- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- We would sooner drive to a difficult place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort out than a car that has not moved. On the verge on Woodside, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.

- A van turning up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning NP10 8, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you phone.

- Three facts decide your whole job: the liquid you poured in, the rough measure involved, and if anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Petrol in a diesel Nissan Qashqai, sat at Pye Corner since breakfast? The wait has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is dormant. It was the trip in that drew thinned diesel through your pump. Phone before you move it.

## At a forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

The job starts at a pump, usually. Quite often the work finishes there as well.

If you're still on the forecourt at Asda, that's usually where the drain takes place — we operate on station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission.

At a forecourt, it is caught with the engine never started, and nowhere else does it.

Fuel sucked out of your tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and your lines as well as that tank. That's still not a calamity, and we put it right where the vehicle sits. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

The attendants will generally help you push it clear of the pump so the next motorist can get through. That's worth doing.

Cranking it just to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

How much fuel your pump has pulled is what we are really asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry our technicians want runs like this: diesel Ford Focus, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now switched off at Asda.

## Duffryn plus the areas near it

Duffryn is a residential suburb, and our vans head out to it and to the areas by it on those same journeys: Maes-glas, Celtic Lakes, Cleppa Park, Gaer and Level of Mendalgief.

There are pages for the majority of locations across Newport, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from this list means nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come.

Contact us and enquire rather than presuming — county lines particularly, and anywhere your phone tends to struggle with.

The area this page includes appears on this map.

The lot is territory we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never bring your vehicle anywhere.

## Duffryn: stranded wherever you parked

Not everyone gets a chance to pull over somewhere sensible.

If you worked it out after setting off and finished up along the verge of Duffryn Drive, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a routine call for us and not an odd one.

Sit beside the car if it's safe to sit in it, but clear of it if it's not.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the problem: start it up to reach somewhere handier and that blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven.

We'll bring the van to a difficult place without any bother, and for your car that's a lot better than pressing on.

What our technicians will ask is if that run there was brief and chilly, since that's where petrol is least able to burn fully — and what won't burn can work past the rings and into the sump. Right up to the moment somebody drives it home, a diesel Citroen C3 parked in the car park outside The Duffryn Arms with a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing deteriorates while it stands, so leave the car overnight then call us first thing.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

under a mile from Duffryn, the local M4 is what counts here.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Never start it to move it. Come off at the first sensible junction and switch off.

On a longer run — anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and mention it when you ring. It affects what our technicians bring.

## Where is Duffryn?

Duffryn is a coastal suburban area in Newport, situated near the Celtic Lakes and Cleppa Park, with Maes-glas to the east. Duffryn has a population of around 4013 people and is characterized by predominantly terraced housing. Duffryn is located close to the city of Newport, approximately 2.2 miles away, and is set at a low elevation of around 9 metres above sea level. Duffryn is part of the wider Newport urban area, with the city's amenities and services within easy reach.

## What follows when we arrive with you around Duffryn

- Our engineers find out what was put in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before quoting.

- Our technicians drain the tank of all the polluted mixture.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.

- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- Our technicians start it and confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away.

We do all of this wherever your car has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

Rarely the problem, the place. On-street is the most common place our engineers work, and a cramped parking space is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you phone from near Community cycle care club, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can park alongside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the Vauxhall Insignia gets emptied, your filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the lines cleaned and fresh fuel put through the entire system — as by now the worst of that is in your lines, not your tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Duffryn?

Never start it: that first step stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this fault itself.

Petrol weakens your diesel and removes the lubrication the system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Duffryn page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Duffryn prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What moves the figure is set out below, as this job isn't one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and if our van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

What takes place next is the trouble. The engine straight away sucks the petrol left waiting in your filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, since emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put fresh diesel in, someone certain will tell you — and that tip is half true, since do it to a diesel Hyundai Tucson parked up, Duffryn Community link say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Call us instead. Our engineers flush your system and take the fuel filter off where the vehicle has a workable one, and that is the difference between the vehicle being repaired and the car merely starting.

## Duffryn drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Duffryn petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave the vehicle off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more commonly than people expect.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate fault. So no.

Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to cope with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever the car is, we drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Leave the engine shut off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that.

Cold and stationary, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Newport and around Duffryn: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
