# Dunbar: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, all over Dunbar and the remainder of East Lothian. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While the engine has not been started and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in.

Phone and then we will tell you what comes from here before you do any more.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Don't start the car. Fired up all the same? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor typically can't run, and so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off happily, for a few miles. People get that confused. It isn't all right — that fuel system is wearing every mile you do.

- Diesel combusts, and before it burns it protects — your high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition off as well: turning it on is often all it takes to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into just those components.

- Never pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it only leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on High Street, anywhere — an awkward place for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a vehicle that never moved.

- The van arriving instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts EH42 1, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Have both prepared before you dial.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, about how much, and also if the engine has run. Those three replies decide the whole visit.

Quarter past eight, a quick fill-up on the way in, and you realise around eleven — by that point the diesel Volkswagen Golf has been sitting at the nearest station for three hours. Ring us and leave the car just where it is. The journey in is the part that counts now, since diesel has two jobs on its way through an engine: it combusts, and before it burns it protects the injection pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were driven with your pump working on a fluid that had shed a lot of the protection it is made for — which is why the thing we ask is how many miles you drove, not how long your car has been parked.

## Can petrol be taken from a diesel at the forecourt?

Forecourts are where the work often kicks off, and where a fair chunk of that closes.

If you're still at the forecourt at JET, that is normally where this drain gets done — we work on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent.

A filling station is the one setting this gets halted before your motor has started.

Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to go past your tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

Move the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they normally will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that's worth doing.

Cranking it to move four vehicle lengths is not.

The phone call we hope for goes like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, a few litres of unleaded, run a couple of miles, now turned off outside The Co-operative Food. What we're actually asking is how much fuel your pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

## Will our technicians serve your corner of Dunbar?

Stanley Place, Marine Court, Belhaven, Winterfield Mains, Broxburn — all of those on the runs that take us over to Dunbar too, a coastal town.

If yours is not on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for most towns across East Lothian, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours.

Near the boundary, or somewhere your phone gets wrong? Contact us and check instead of presuming.

The patch the page covers is on our map.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is territory our technicians work on, and none of that needs the car to move to us.

## Dunbar: broken down where you pulled up

Not everyone has a suitable place to stop.

If you worked it out after setting off and finished up along the verge on Silver Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a normal call for us instead of an unusual one.

Sit by the car if it is wise to sit in it, but clear of it if it's not.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to reach somewhere handier and the mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered.

Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van coming out to an inconvenient location, and that is no problem for us.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

under 50 miles out of Dunbar, your M8 is what matters now.

A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are generally lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Never restart it to reposition. Pull off at the first safe exit then turn off.

It affects what our technicians bring, and so tell us when you phone: on a longer drive — anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

The pump is not turning, so whatever the diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to Coast Guard Green, none of it is happening now. Nothing is getting worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but never drive the car home to buy any.

## Where is Dunbar?

Dunbar is a coastal town in East Lothian, situated on the southeastern coast of Scotland, with a population of around 9404 people. Dunbar has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are predominant, and the town is located near several smaller communities, including Stanley Place and Belhaven. Dunbar sits at an elevation of 26 metres, looking out over the sea, and is approximately 26 miles from Edinburgh. Dunbar is also a significant distance from London, at around 325 miles away.

## Our visit in Dunbar, step by step

- Our engineers establish what went in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.

- The contaminated mixture comes from your tank.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.

- The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.

- Our technicians start the car and make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

Then it is ready to pull away.

All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Seldom the problem, the place. On-street is the most common place our engineers work, and a tight parking bay is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you phone from near Mercat Cross, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can park beside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Vauxhall Astra gets emptied, the filter changed where a workable one exists, the lines rinsed and fresh fuel put through the entire circuit — as by now the worst of that is in the lines, not that tank.

## A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Dunbar

Never crank it: that first step applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection your fuel system depends on.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal around Dunbar has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. Our technicians cover both.

Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some agreements want the firm to authorise the work, and that's much quicker dealt with up front than later. Then phone us about the Audi Q3, the diesel one, close to Dunbar Town House Museum and Gallery. Don't worry that you cannot say how full the tank was — almost no one can two days into a motor, and it is something our technicians establish on the spot. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of proportion. A couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

## Dunbar costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what changes it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much that tank can hold.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

If it is not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Dunbar

## I am on a forecourt around Dunbar. Can you drain the car on the spot?

A large share of this work happens there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the station's permission our technicians attend Asda and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the engine has run counts much more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, and keep the car off.

Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more often than drivers fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

## Standing next to it?

Don't turn it back on.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.

Throughout East Lothian and in Dunbar: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
