# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Dunrobin?

If you have not turned on the motor yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor requires while the petrol is still inside the tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has ended up in Dunrobin or the rest of North Lanarkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Phone before all else starts, so you will see what happens next.

## What to try now about petrol in a diesel

- Don't start the vehicle — and don't trust it when it starts. This is the thing most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel typically just will not run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, ticks over and moves off quite happily for a few miles. It is not okay. It is wearing that fuel system as you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition is left off also — flick it on and you often prime that system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for just those parts.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage as that advice suggests — so don't put diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A car that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to deal with, so stay where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Lyle Road? Hazards on, and keep it there. An odd location suits us better than a started diesel.

- Before you call, have your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting ML6 8 — that's what settles whether the van arrives or circles.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has been run. The answers shape whatever happens next.

Quarter past eight, a quick refuel on the way in, and you realise somewhere around eleven — by then the diesel Volkswagen Golf has been standing outside Drumgelloch for three hours. Phone and leave it just where it sits. The trip in is the bit that counts now, since diesel performs two jobs on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before it combusts it protects that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were covered with your pump running on a fluid that had shed a lot of the protection it is built around — which is why the thing our engineers ask is how far you travelled, not how long the vehicle has been standing.

## On the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

Forecourts are where this job often begins, and where a big part of that ends.

The drain normally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the owner's consent, that's somewhere our technicians work, and often.

A filling station is the only place this is spotted before the engine has started.

Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for your key.

Away from the petrol pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you move it. Very much worth doing.

Starting the car to move four car lengths isn't.

## Dunrobin plus the places next to it

As a residential suburb, Dunrobin sees a regular call, and the places close by go along on the same journey: Moffat Mills and Clarkston, Petersburn and Craigneuk, Drumgelloch.

There are pages for nearly all places in North Lanarkshire, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being left off the list says nothing about if we come.

Presuming is the mistake to skip, above all on a border or somewhere your phone struggles. Call us to check.

This map shows the area the page includes.

The lot is ground our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never drive your car anywhere.

You'll be advised to move the vehicle clear of that gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. On the zig-zags at the local primary school, a misfilled BMW 3 Series running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Fire it up three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes your lines, every prime draws more petrol past the filter toward your pump. Let them grumble. Phone.

## Broken down by the kerbside near Dunrobin

The chance to pull over anywhere sensible does not fall to everyone.

If you realised after setting off and ended up on the verge of Towers Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a routine call for us rather than a rare one.

Whether you sit beside the motor or step away from it depends on whether sitting there is safe.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere better and the mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven.

However difficult the place, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that is much better for your car than carrying on.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Here is where the M8 counts, under 3 miles out of Dunrobin.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are usually a loss of power, a rough idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Pull off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and do not start it to reposition.

It affects what we bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

None of that is the engine failing. That's the bit worth hearing, and it is why the normal Katherine Park call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Dacia Duster drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, the idle rough and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting parts it flows through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure rather than only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built bleeds past tolerances, delivery turns up poorer and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once the fuel is sorted.

## Dunrobin itself

Dunrobin is a suburban area situated on the riverside in North Lanarkshire, with a mix of housing types dominated by detached homes. Dunrobin sits at an elevation of 159 metres, looking out over the surrounding countryside. Dunrobin is located near several other communities, including Moffat Mills, Clarkston, and Petersburn, and is within commuting distance of Glasgow, which is approximately 11 miles away. Dunrobin has a population of around 3782 residents.

## What our engineers do when we reach you in Dunrobin

- Three things get established before any price — your fuel that got in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- We clear that tank of the contaminated fuel.

- Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that created the trouble.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.

- It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers check that it is running smoothly.

That has your car ready to set off.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Calling from close to Springfield Community Centre? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it is on. Room for a van next to you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The spot itself hardly matters: on-street is where our engineers work most, and we'd much rather have a narrow spot than a motor someone has driven somewhere quicker. Then it's a drain for the Vauxhall Astra, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines cleaned, fresh fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in the fuel lines and not your tank.

## Dunrobin AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

The problem is not the same, though the opening step is — don't start it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal around Dunrobin has its own page with the full story — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the car — some contracts require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about the diesel Ford Kuga near Airdrie Clarkston Parish Church. You'll not know how full that tank was. Scarcely anybody does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out on site all the same. We ask because the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is engineered to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Dunrobin?

One price would not be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much the tank holds.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Dunrobin

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Dunrobin?

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Our engineers work at Morrisons and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mix pulled through it.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It is salvageable a lot more frequently than drivers expect, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores.

Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

## Is the vehicle still with you?

Your engine remains off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then let the car stay that way.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Dunrobin and throughout North Lanarkshire.
