# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Duntocher? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Duntocher and the rest of West Dunbartonshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While your engine has not been started and the petrol is still inside your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much went in.

Our technicians can tell you what the following move is. Phone — this happens ahead of everything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

- Whenever you drive, your pump and the injectors wear. This is why you don't crank it, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit people get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off as well — switch it on and you often prime your system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for exactly those parts.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort, and our team would much rather get to an odd location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Roman Road, put those hazards on then keep the vehicle there.

- Get your location ready before you dial. A postcode that starts G81 6 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between a van arriving and the van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has been turned over. Your responses determine all that happens next.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Driving it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has put real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return leg would more or less double the figure to no gain. The Volkswagen Golf can wait outside Dalmuir perfectly safely. Call from the platform if handier; standing over us whilst our engineers work isn't required.

## Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel on the forecourt?

The work kicks off at a pump, usually. Regularly the job ends on site too.

The drain typically gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the owner's agreement, that's somewhere our technicians work, and routinely.

At a garage, it gets stopped with your engine never fired, and nowhere else does it.

Fuel drawn out of your tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is started and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the fuel lines along with your tank. That is still not a calamity, and we sort it out where the car stands. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Staff will generally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next customer get past. Accept the assistance.

Rolling the car four bays doesn't warrant cranking the motor.

## Duntocher and the places next to it

Parkhall, Hardgate, Faifley, Mountblow, Dalmuir — each of those on our trips that bring us across to Duntocher as well, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations across West Dunbartonshire, and the ones listed above are merely the closest neighbours.

Contact us to ask rather than assuming — county lines above all, and wherever your satnav can struggle with.

The area the page covers appears on this map.

All of it is ground our technicians work: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never drive the car anywhere.

Move it out of the gateway and deal with it later — that is what somebody will say, and it's wrong. Parked on the zig-zags at the local primary school, a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 3 Series is a nuisance and nothing worse. Started three more times for courtesy, it is no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, as priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes past your filter on to the pump. Let them moan. Give us a call.

## Roadside breakdowns across Duntocher

Not everybody gets a chance to pull over somewhere safe.

A common call for us and not an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up by the verge of Veitches Court or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Clear of the car if it is not safe to be inside, by it when it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better.

We will take the van to an inconvenient spot without any fuss, and for the vehicle that's a lot better than pressing on.

A diesel Ford Focus parked in the parking area by The Glenhead Tavern holding a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up until somebody takes it home. Park it overnight then phone us next morning. Nothing degrades whilst it stands. What we will ask is if the drive there was brief and cold, since that's where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and whatever won't burn can work past the piston rings then into the sump.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the local Toll Plaza Interchange comes in — under 3 miles away from Duntocher.

It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Don't start it to reposition. Pull off at the next safe junction and switch off.

Long trip? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, since it changes what goes in our van.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the vehicle stands, because a diesel Peugeot 3008 left outside Goldenhill Park is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

## A little about Duntocher

Duntocher is a suburban area in West Dunbartonshire, situated near the coast and approximately 8 miles northwest of Glasgow. Duntocher sits at an elevation of around 55 metres, overlooking the Clyde Valley. Duntocher is characterised by its predominantly flat-type housing and is located near other suburban areas such as Parkhall and Hardgate.

## What our technicians do when our engineers arrive with you around Duntocher

- Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- We empty that tank of the contaminated fuel.

- Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on isn't the thing that started the problem.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- Our engineers start the engine and check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to set off.

All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Rarely the trouble, the spot. On-street is the most common location we work, and a cramped parking space is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you phone from close to War Memorial, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can park next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Mercedes E-Class gets drained, the fuel filter changed where a usable one exists, the fuel lines flushed and clean fuel put through the entire circuit — since by now the worst of that is in the fuel lines, not your tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Duntocher is a distinct matter

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is unchanged — never crank it — yet this fault isn't.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Duntocher page. Both are ours to handle.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Duntocher

What changes the figure is laid out below, because the job is not one job and our engineers can't honestly put a single price on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Duntocher

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Duntocher?

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this happens.

Our technicians visit JET and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

What decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been drawn through the fuel system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more often than drivers assume.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It isn't an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores.

That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to live with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Still with your car?

Never switch the car on again.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists assume.

Across West Dunbartonshire and around Duntocher: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
