# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Durn? Don't Start It

If you have not fired up the engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor requires while the petrol is still in your tank and the engine has not turned over, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has stopped in Durn or the rest of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Ring us before everything else begins, and you will see what follows after that.

## The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually not run at all, so the person stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a few miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not crank it. And having started, do not trust it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Flicking the car's ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition alone.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Our team would much rather get to an awkward place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is easier to deal with than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Ealees Road, that means hazards on and keep it.

- Check where you are before calling. A postcode beginning OL15 0, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.

- What was put in, about how many litres, and also whether the motor has started — the three answers decide the full job. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Taking it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has pushed real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return leg would roughly double the figure to no end. The Volkswagen Golf can stay outside Littleborough perfectly happily. Call from the platform if easier; standing over us whilst we work isn't required.

## Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

The job begins at a pump, mostly. Frequently the work ends on site too.

We operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's permission, and so if you are still at Texaco that's usually where this drain takes place.

Nowhere else other than a garage can the mistake be halted with your engine still untouched.

The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key determine how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require flushing as well as that tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where the vehicle stands.

Roll the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next motorist gets past the pump, and that's worth doing.

Firing it for four car lengths? Don't.

Car parks like the one outside The Co-operative Food are a spot our technicians attend all the time, and your fuel is seldom the tricky part. The bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit on the way in that decides whether our van can reach you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you ring, and which way the car is pointing. When we cannot work alongside the diesel Renault Clio we will move it without running it — and that is not pedantry about a couple of seconds of running. Every start primes that fuel system and draws more of that mixture out of the tank and towards your pump, and so a vehicle shunted twice into a nicer spot has silently become a harder job than one left precisely where it stopped.

## Durn and the places next to it

Being a residential suburb, Durn sees a frequent call, whilst the villages nearby go with it on that same journey: Ealees and Honresfeld, Littleborough and Gale, Caldermoor.

We do come. Those places above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations in Greater Manchester, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

On a boundary, or somewhere the satnav gets wrong? Ring us and ask instead of presuming.

Look at the map for the ground shown here.

The vehicle never needs to come to us. We operate throughout all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Your diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed completely usual on the way back from Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School. They all do, and that is the catch with petrol in a diesel rather than the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol motor and it generally won't run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing has happened — all the while the high-pressure pump keeps working without the protection the fuel is supposed to be supplying. Nothing warns you, since from behind the wheel there is nothing to alert you about. Call us with approximately how far you went and how hard you drove it; the second answer counts more than the first.

## Kerbside stops across Durn

Not everybody has a chance to pull over somewhere suitable.

If you realised after setting off and landed by the verge of West View, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a normal call for us and not a rare one.

Okay there? Remain by it. Not okay? Move out and clear of it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

A technician coming to an awkward location is no bother for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

Here is where the local M62 comes in — under 3 miles from Durn.

It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the next junction that's safe, stop there, and don't start the car to move it.

On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors, and mention it when you phone. It alters what our engineers bring.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted components it runs through, and petrol dilutes it. That's the entire process, and it accounts for the normal Whittaker Golf Club call: a diesel Ford Focus that drove out there without complaint and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when the fuel weakens, pressure that should build then stay built starts leaking past clearances instead, and your engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered around. None of that is your engine failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is sorted.

## About Durn

Durn is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated on the riverside with a mix of terraced housing. Durn sits at an elevation of 155 metres, approximately 13 miles from Manchester and 169 miles from London. Durn is close to nearby places such as Ealees, Honresfeld, and Littleborough, and has a population of around 3193 residents.

## Our visit around Durn, step by step

- The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.

- Away comes the contaminated mixture.

- We clean the lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's remaining in the system is not what created the problem.

- New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- We start the car and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to pull away.

There's no need for a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is spotted early, long-term damage is very rare.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Durn?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor remains off — while this fault under it is a distinct one altogether.

Petrol thins the diesel and takes away the protection the system relies on.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Durn page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Turn off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — close to Hollingworth Visitor Centre or anywhere at all. Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfilled diesel Audi A6 telling you what's wrong.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Durn

What moves the price is laid out below, as this job isn't one job and we cannot frankly put a single price on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much that tank can hold.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a technician.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

## Questions we get about petrol in diesel in Durn

## At a petrol station around Durn, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Our technicians visit Shell and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether we can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Driving is what takes the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more commonly than motorists assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with the car?

Shut off is the way the car stays.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then let it stay that way.

This is recoverable from much more regularly than drivers fear, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Throughout Greater Manchester and in Durn: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
