# Each End: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a second, and not to move it: the engine remains off. Stop there.

The next few minutes determine it far more than anything else: petrol in a diesel that has not run usually amounts to clearing then purging, on the spot.

Below is the sequence from here, anywhere around Each End you are.

## Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Before anything else, these — in this order.

- Bleeding the system pulls petrol from your tank towards the components it damages, and turning the ignition on can be all it takes to do that. So your keys come out, and your ignition stays off completely.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of the petrol — it only leaves you with more of the same blend.

- Near moving traffic? Then the hazards come on before anything else, so the car is easy to spot.

- However short the distance, starting it to move it is the mistake. At a forecourt, push the car away from the petrol pump by hand instead, then ask the attendants to help.

- Hold on to your receipt: the fuel and roughly how much are written on it, and they are what our engineers ask about first.

Still on the move when you noticed? Come off the M20 at the next junction if that's where you are, under 15 miles from Each End, and stop somewhere sensible rather than pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

## The fork in every Each End fuel drain: has it run yet?

Everything after this stage rests on one answer.

If your motor has not run at all:

- The petrol remains in your tank, and just there.

- Usually it is emptied and rinsed just where the vehicle stands.

- This, here, is the best place to be in, and the reason step one counts.

If the motor has been run, even for a moment:

- Petrol has been pulled out of your tank, through your filter and into the lines.

- The high-pressure pump and your injectors get it on a longer run.

- Flushing the lines, the fuel filter dealt with, occasionally more: this job expands as the distance does.

That line falls there because diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not.

In the tank, left alone, petrol harms nothing.

Move that petrol, though, and it wears the very parts doing the moving.

## Calling about petrol in a diesel from Each End: what to have ready

Whether the van circles or finds you comes down to a little planning.

- The best place to start is a postcode — one starting CT3 2 — for where you are.

- Wherever you have pulled up, the road's name is useful — whether that is Sandwich Road or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Name a car park by what it serves — the one at Co-op Food, for instance — and it is much quicker to find.

- The vehicle. Make, model, plus that it is a diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Each End page.

- Roughly how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.

- If it has run, how far plus how hard — and whether it's run at all.

- Hire or company car? Some contracts need the owner's go-ahead for the work, and getting it before we get there is faster than afterwards.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then. Email works as well if it can wait, with your car parked at home, going nowhere.

## While you wait for a fuel drain around Each End

During the wait, the harm comes from kindly meant help — so these count.

- Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere dangerous, get yourself clear of the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it stands, wait with it.

- Not to roll it a couple of yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's kindness: nobody starts it.

- None of that takes the petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from the boot. So no additives.

- Emptying it yourself is out: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond the tank remains where it is regardless.

- Keep your ignition off — the windows and your radio too.

## When the van arrives: the fuel drain, step by step

- The price comes after three queries, not before them — what went in, how much, and whether it has run — because the answers decide the job.

- Emptying it's how that blend gets taken from the tank.

- The fuel lines are purged. If it ran, that petrol has shifted beyond that tank, and your lines are carrying it.

- Cleared, or changed if the car has a usable one: the fuel filter is sorted next.

- Fresh diesel in, and the fuel system primed.

- Starting it. When your system is primed with clean diesel, we fire it up and confirm it runs properly.

The car has fresh diesel running through it before we leave.

The car goes back to normal driving right away, and long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted early.

## After your fuel drain is done: driving in Each End a second time

- Once it has been started on fresh fuel, there's nothing unusual to do: drive normally.

- Pull over and call us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was carried out, so hold on to the documents.

- Next time, check the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.

Petrol in Diesel takes it from there — on your driveway, by the kerbside, on the forecourt — once you've done stage one: keys out, motor off, receipt in your pocket.
