# Earlston: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Earlston and the rest of Scottish Borders. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the motor has not yet run and the petrol is still inside your tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

Contact us before anything else begins, so you will hear what happens next.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for a few miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not start the car. And having started, do not believe it: your fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it burns it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off as well: flicking it on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into just those components.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that has not shifted is the simplest one to handle, and our team would rather get to an awkward location than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Gun Road, switch those hazards on and leave the vehicle there.

- A van showing up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning TD4 6, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Get both prepared before you ring.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, approximately how many litres, and also if your car has run. Those three facts shape the entire visit.

Quarter past eight, a fast refuel on the way in, and you realise around eleven — by then the diesel Renault Megane has been parked at Tweedbank for three hours. Call us and leave the car exactly where it is. The journey in is the part that is key here, as diesel performs two tasks on its way through a motor: it combusts, and before it burns it lubricates that injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were covered with your pump working on a fuel that had shed most of the protection it is built around — which is why the thing we ask is how many miles you travelled, not how long the vehicle has been sitting.

## On the forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

The job begins at the pump, typically. Quite often it finishes at one too.

Our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent, and so if you are still at Morrisons that's generally where this drain takes place.

A forecourt is the one place it is stopped before your engine has run.

Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from the tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to go past that tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key are what determine that.

The staff will generally help you roll it away from the pump so the next customer can get past. That is worth doing.

Firing the car to roll four car lengths isn't.

## Service around Earlston

The same trips carry us to Craigsford Mains, Kedslie, Redpath, Chapel on Leader and Easter Housebyres along with Earlston, which is a village.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and nearly all locations in Scottish Borders have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Assuming is the habit to skip, above all on a border or anywhere a satnav fails. Call us to ask.

That map outlines the area this page includes.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is territory our technicians work on, and none of it needs the vehicle to come to us.

## Stranded at the kerbside around Earlston

Not everybody gets a chance to pull over somewhere sensible.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up on the verge of The Green, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you wait beside the vehicle or move clear of it depends on if staying there feels wise.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

However inconvenient the location, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that is much better for your car than pressing on.

Here's what a job in the car park by The Swan typically looks like. We get to your car, ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since — these three answers decide most of the work. Then the tainted mix comes out of the tank, the lines get flushed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and your system is bled. Then our technicians start the car, make sure it runs smoothly, and you drive away.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has gone

Here is where the M8 comes in — under 50 miles away from Earlston.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power drains away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Come off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and never restart the vehicle to move it.

Suppose the worst of it on a long drive. Anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you phone. What we bring differs.

## A little about Earlston

Earlston is a village situated on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders, with a population of around 1718 people. Earlston has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most common, and the village is located near other small settlements such as Craigsford Mains and Kedslie. Earlston sits at an elevation of 109 metres above sea level, and its riverside setting provides scenic views of the surrounding countryside. Earlston is within commuting distance of Edinburgh, which is approximately 29 miles away.

## The visit in Earlston, step by step

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.

- The polluted fuel is drawn from that tank.

- Our technicians clean the lines and clean the filter, so what's remaining in your system isn't what created the trouble.

- Your system gets bled, on clean diesel.

- Our technicians turn it on and make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves it ready to pull away.

There is no need for a workshop at any stage, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is caught early, lasting damage is very unusual.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Mercedes C-Class parked close to Mikhail Yurievich Lermontov Statue barely two streets on. Ring us, and leave the car off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the filter and the pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence rinsing the fuel lines rather than only clearing the tank.

## A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Earlston

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor remains off — while this problem beneath it's a separate one altogether.

Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the protection the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue in its place.

Both are ours. There is a separate Earlston page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres resting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger blend rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Nearly no one knows how full the tank was in a motor picked up two days ago, and our engineers work that out on the spot. Do phone the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to sign off the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then phone us about the Vauxhall Astra close to War Memorial.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Earlston

One number would not be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much your tank can hold.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.

- Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Somebody sure of themselves will tell you to drain the vehicle and put new diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Peugeot 208 close to Earlston Rugby Football Club and the engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here's the catch: there is petrol left in your filter and the feed lines, and the first thing your engine does is pull it back through the pump a second time. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left that tank. Ring us. The system gets flushed, your filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that's what separates a fixed vehicle from one that merely starts.

## Earlston drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station around Earlston, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big part of this work happens there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the site's consent we visit BP and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then keep the vehicle off.

Driving shifts the trouble along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep the engine shut off.

Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

A parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists fear.
