# East End: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car needs while the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it is the coming few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has come to rest in East End or the remainder of Kent, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

A single ring our way will be sufficient: our team shall explain what happens from here. Do it straight away.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Don't fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then do not trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually cannot run, so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away normally, for a couple of miles. People get that muddled. It's not okay — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.

- Leave your ignition alone too. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it burns it greases that high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Switching the ignition on is often sufficient to prime that system, which carries the petrol out of the tank and into exactly those components.

- Don't pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies, and topping up removes nothing — it only leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- A motor that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Cliff Gardens? Hazards on, then keep the car there. A tricky spot suits us better than a started diesel.

- The van showing up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts ME12 3, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you phone.

- Three answers settle the entire job: the liquid you poured in, the rough measure of it, and whether anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Never take it home. The drive in has already put a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Volkswagen Golf, and the trip back would roughly double it for no purpose at all. Call us from the platform if that is quicker. Our technicians do not need you hovering over the car at Sheerness-On-Sea whilst our technicians get on, and we would far rather speak to you tonight than find out on Monday.

## Can petrol be taken from a diesel on a forecourt?

Plenty of the job starts at a pump, meaning a large portion of that gets done there.

If you're still at the forecourt at Shell, that's typically where this drain gets done — our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement.

Before your motor has fired — a garage is the only place the mistake is halted.

The few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the keys decide how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle is.

Wheel the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next customer gets through the pump, and that is worth doing.

Shifting the car four spaces does not merit starting the motor.

## Parts we serve near East End

These same journeys get us to Minster, Merrymans Hill, Scrapsgate, Eastchurch and Halfway Houses as well as East End, which is a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for most towns around Kent, and the ones listed above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list says nothing about whether our technicians come.

Near the border, or somewhere the satnav gets wrong? Contact us to ask rather than assuming.

That map marks the ground the page covers.

Our technicians work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.

Shift the vehicle out of the gateway and sort it out later — that's what someone will say, and it is wrong. Parked on the zig-zags by St Georges CofE (Aided) Primary School, a wrongly fuelled diesel Skoda Octavia is a nuisance and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for politeness, it's no longer a tank issue but a fuel system one, because priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes through the filter towards your pump. Let everyone grumble. Call us.

## Stopped by the kerbside somewhere in East End?

Some drivers get no suitable place to pull in at all.

Set off, then twigged? Landed along the verge of Oak Avenue, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Wait by the vehicle when it's sensible to sit there, yet out of the car when it's not.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to reach somewhere handier and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled.

Carrying on does your car far more harm than a technician heading out to a difficult place, and that's no bother for us.

## Petrol in a diesel, but your car has moved

under 10 miles out of East End, the local M2 is what counts here.

A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the first safe junction, switch off, and don't restart it to move it.

On a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what we bring.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the precision parts that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel Mercedes C-Class went, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and flat on the way back is how that run to The Glen went, then, and that tank is where to look. Stop somewhere sensible, turn off and ring us.

## About East End

East End is a small suburban area on the coast of Kent, situated near the towns of Minster and Southend-on-Sea. East End has a relatively low elevation of around 40 metres above sea level and is characterized by detached housing. East End is located near several other small places, including Merrymans Hill and Scrapsgate, and is approximately 41.5 miles from London.

## Once we get to you around East End: what we do

- The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what got in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.

- Away comes the contaminated mixture.

- What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what caused the trouble, and so the fuel lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.

- New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- Once it is started, our engineers make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

That has it ready to set off.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and as all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a workshop.

Ringing from close to Minster Bethel Congregational Church? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it is on. Room for a van next to you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself hardly matters: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we would far rather have a narrow bay than a motor someone has driven somewhere quicker. Then it's a drain for the Citroen C3, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines flushed, clean fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of that is in the lines and not your tank.

## A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in East End

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — while the issue beneath it's a separate one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own East End page. Both are ours to handle.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around East End

What changes the figure is listed below, since this job isn't one job and we cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much your tank holds.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can safely get to your car and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

Tell us your car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went limp, your idle turned ragged, and your diesel Volvo XC60 is now waiting near Minster Abbey Gatehouse Museum. That deadness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully not your engine packing up — and because there's no warning for it, cars in that position normally get driven a second time before anyone rings. Don't. Switch it off and call us.

## East End drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station in East End, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this takes place.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there's possible.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving moves the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all.

What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no.

Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Turned off is the way the car remains.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around East End and across Kent.
