# East Preston: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not start your engine. While the fuel is still in the tank and your engine has not yet been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that's decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, all over East Preston and the remainder of West Sussex, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

Phone before all else happens, and you will know what happens from there.

## What to try now about petrol in a diesel

- Do not fire it up — and do not depend on it when it runs. This is the bit drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel usually just can't run, so the person stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives off just fine for several miles. It is not fine. It is eating into the fuel system whenever you drive.

- Switching the car's ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition alone.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A motor that has not moved is the easiest one to deal with, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Fairlands? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started diesel.

- The van arriving rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts BN16 1, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Have both ready before you dial.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what got in, about how much, plus whether the engine has been run. The replies determine whatever follows.

The drive back would about double it, for no purpose at all. One commute has already pushed a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of that Renault Megane. So keep the vehicle where it is. Ring us from the platform if that is easier — no one needs you hovering over the vehicle outside Angmering whilst our technicians work, and tonight trumps finding out on Monday.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Most of the job begins at a pump, which means a good chunk of it ends up done at one.

The drain usually gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the site's permission, that is a spot we work, and regularly.

Before the motor has run — a garage is the one location this ends up caught.

The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for your key settle how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where the car is.

Move it out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that's worth doing.

Moving the car four spaces does not warrant starting it.

## East Preston and the places next to it

West Kingston, Rustington, East Kingston, Kingston Gorse, Angmering — all of those on our trips that carry us across to East Preston too, a coastal village.

If yours is not on that list it does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for most places around West Sussex, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours.

On the boundary, or somewhere the satnav misreads? Call us to ask instead of guessing.

The map shows the area the page includes.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of that is ground our technicians cover, and none of it requires the car to travel to us.

## Kerbside stops across East Preston

Some drivers get no suitable spot to stop at all.

Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of The Street since you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it is the usual kind.

Sit beside your car if it's safe to be in it, but out of the car when it isn't.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven.

Our van driving to an inconvenient place is no trouble for us, and it is far better for the car than pressing on.

It will fire up. It will drive off quite happily. That's the problem, as a diesel on a diluted tank runs typically while grinding the parts its fuel should be protecting. So no, do not try the trip home from The Great Dane — leave the Peugeot 3008 and phone us.

## Driven it already? Stop, then check this

This is where the local M23 comes into it — under 25 miles away from East Preston.

A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next exit that is safe, pull up there, and never start the car to reposition.

Long run? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in the van.

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off then call us. Fine on the way out to Warren Recreation Ground, gutless on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol thins diesel; weaker fuel slips past the close-fitting parts that build injection pressure; and the farther your diesel Vauxhall Astra drove, the less of that pressure it held.

## East Preston itself

East Preston is a coastal village in West Sussex, situated near the mouth of the River Arun and close to the South Downs National Park. East Preston has a low elevation of around 7 metres above sea level and is surrounded by nearby places such as West Kingston, Rustington, and East Kingston. East Preston is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock and is located approximately 50.6 miles from London. East Preston remains a popular residential area with a population of around 2608 people.

## What follows when we get to you around East Preston

- We ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses alter what the work really is.

- Out goes the polluted mixture.

- What is remaining in the system should not be what caused the issue, so the fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.

- Once it is started, we check it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you're ready to set off.

Our engineers do everything wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been noticed quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

The pump sits ahead of the fuel injectors, and so whatever a wearing one loses travels onward with your fuel — which is why we're firm about not driving on. Call us, and leave the diesel Kia Sportage where it is close to East Preston Library.

## East Preston AdBlue removal is a different problem

Never fire it up: that opening rule holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own East Preston page. Both are ours to handle.

New spots are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical not slapdash: the narrower petrol nozzle goes into a modern diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Topped up near East Preston And Kingston Bowls Club without thinking, in a diesel Volkswagen Touran you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody notices, and miles is what settles how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

## East Preston costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Honestly, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what changes it:

- This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.

- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range.

Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around East Preston

## At a petrol station in East Preston, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a large share of this work happens.

Often, provided the site consents: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something we answer there and then.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether your engine has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more often than people expect.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

The pump still has to put up with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later on.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Still with your car?

Leave the engine shut off.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from far more frequently than people fear, and a parked, cold car is the best place to be in.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around East Preston and across West Sussex.
