# Eastcombe: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the motor yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still in the tank and the engine has not run, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Eastcombe or the rest of Gloucestershire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Phone before all else begins, so you'll learn what happens after that.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- While you drive, your pump and your injectors wear. That's why you never fire it up, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the point motorists get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel performs two tasks: it combusts, and before it ignites it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is often all it takes to prime that system, which draws that petrol out of that tank then into precisely those parts.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- A motor that has not shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and so wait where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Middle Hill? Hazards on, then leave the car there. A difficult spot suits us better than a started engine.

- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning GL6 7, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.

- Three details settle the entire visit: the fuel you put in, the rough amount involved, and whether it has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight. A rushed refuel on the road in. Around eleven it occurs to you, and by then your diesel Renault Megane has stood at Stroud for three hours. Phone then leave the car where it is. What counts is the trip in, as diesel both ignites and — before that — lubricates your pump and the fuel injectors, while petrol only ever combusts. Those couple of miles worked your pump on a liquid stripped of a great deal of its protection, and no volume of sitting in a car park adds any of it back. Hence the question about mileage rather than hours sitting, and hence the advice to leave the keys be till our engineers turn up.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where the job mostly begins, and where a good part of that closes.

We work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement, and so if you're still at Murco that is usually where the drain takes place.

The forecourt is the one spot this can be stopped before the motor has run.

Our engineers can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from the tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to go past your tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key are what determine that.

The staff will generally offer to push the car away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing.

Shifting the car four bays does not justify starting the motor.

How much fuel your pump has sucked is what we are truly asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the call our technicians like runs like this: diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now shut off at Waitrose.

## Do we serve your end of Eastcombe?

As a rural village, Eastcombe has a frequent visit, and the areas nearby come with it on the same round: Kitlye and Bussage, Chalford Hill and Chalford, France Lynch.

We still come. Those places above are only the closest neighbours, and a page is there for most locations around Gloucestershire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Presuming is the thing to resist, especially on the border or somewhere the satnav struggles. Call us to ask.

The patch the page spans sits on our map.

We work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of that, and the car does not need to move to us.

You will be urged to move the vehicle out of the gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags by Eastcombe Primary School, a misfilled Skoda Octavia running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Crank it three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime draws more petrol beyond your filter toward your pump. Let them moan. Phone us.

## Stranded by the kerbside somewhere around Eastcombe?

Not everyone gets a decent place to pull in.

If you realised after setting off and ended up by the verge beside Fidges Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a routine call for us and not an odd one.

Stay by the motor if it's sensible to be there, and out of the vehicle when it is not.

Don't start it up to get to a safer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into the system.

However tricky the spot, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that is far better for the car than pressing on.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has moved

Here is where your M5 comes into it — under 10 miles away from Eastcombe.

A loss of power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Suppose the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you phone. What we bring differs.

## About Eastcombe

Eastcombe is a small village in Gloucestershire, situated inland at an elevation of 215 metres, approximately 9.5 miles from Gloucester. Eastcombe has a population of around 674 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Eastcombe is located near other villages such as Kitlye, Bussage, and Chalford Hill, and is about 88.6 miles west of London.

## Our job around Eastcombe, step by step

- We ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies alter what the work actually is.

- Out comes the tainted mixture.

- What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what started the trouble, so the lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.

- Your system gets bled, on clean diesel.

- The engine is fired up and checked to confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

Then it is ready to pull away.

Our engineers do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and if it has been noticed early, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

## Eastcombe AdBlue removal is a different job

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is the same — never crank it — yet the issue isn't.

Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Eastcombe page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a misfuelled diesel BMW 5 Series telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, by Eastcombe Village Hall or anywhere else, and do not start it to find a better place.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Eastcombe?

What changes the figure is laid out below, because the job isn't one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much that tank takes.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

The fuel filter, the lines, the pump and its rail: that's where the blend is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. So the tank is not where most of the trouble sits by this point, and a diesel Audi A6 that made it by St Augustine of Canterbury needs the system flushed instead of emptied.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Eastcombe drivers

## At a petrol station in Eastcombe, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Holbrook Garage is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and leave it off.

Driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more regularly than motorists expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned.

The pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it after that.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, because we drain and flush the car wherever it is.

## Waiting next to it?

Keep it switched off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and parked, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Eastcombe and throughout Gloucestershire.
