# The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Eastcote

Stop. Motor off. Leave the car like that — no second on, no moving it at all.

Petrol in a diesel that has not been run is usually a drain plus a flush, done where the vehicle sits, and what you do in the coming few minutes decides that more than anything else.

Anywhere you are around Eastcote, here is the order things run from here.

## Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Work through the following before anything else, in this order.

- Ignition off, keys out. Turned on, the ignition can prime your system — and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank towards the components it damages.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of the petrol — it just leaves you with extra of the same blend.

- Make the car easy to see first — hazards on — if there's traffic going past anywhere near you.

- However short the distance, starting it to move it is the mistake. On a forecourt, roll it clear of the pump by hand instead, and ask the attendants to help.

- Which fuel, and about how much? The receipt answers that, and that is where our questions start. Never bin it.

Still driving when you realised? Come off the M1 at the next junction if that is where you are, under 5 miles from Eastcote, and stop somewhere sensible instead of pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

## The fork in each Eastcote fuel drain: has it run yet?

One answer is what everything after this point rests on.

Not run, not even once:

- No place but your tank: that's where that petrol still is.

- Draining and flushing, on the spot, is usually all of that.

- No position is better, and it's why the first stage matters so much.

Engine run, even briefly?

- From the tank, through the fuel filter, into the fuel lines: that's how far the petrol has got.

- On a bigger run it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

- Mileage is what turns it into a bigger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

That line falls there because diesel protects the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not.

In your tank, sitting still, petrol does no harm.

Once it's pumped, petrol begins grinding whatever moves it.

## Calling about petrol in a diesel from Eastcote: what to have ready

Prepare a little, and the van finds you rather than circling.

- The ideal place to start is a postcode — one starting NN12 8 — for where you have stopped.

- A road name helps: Home Close, say, or whichever street you've stopped in. A car park works too.

- Name a car park by what it serves — the one at Tesco, for example — and it's far quicker to find.

- Say what your vehicle is — make, model — and check it is diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own Eastcote page.

- Roughly how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.

- Whether it's run. Then if it has, how far plus how heavily.

- The owner may have to approve the work under some hire and company contracts — which is why it is faster to settle whose car it is before we arrive.

Then ring 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home with going nowhere — does the trick too.

## Eastcote fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

The wait is where well-meant help does the harm. Hold to these.

- Safety before the vehicle. If it has stopped somewhere exposed, get yourself clear of the traffic then wait away from it. If it's safe where it sits, wait with it.

- A kind passer-by does not start it. Nor does anybody wanting to check it still does the trick, or rolling it a couple of yards.

- Additives remain in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of the petrol out a second time.

- Draining it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond the tank stays put regardless.

- Not for your radio, not for the windows: your ignition stays off.

## Step by step: the fuel drain when our van arrives

- First, three queries: which fuel was put in, the amount, and has it run? Those replies decide this job, and so the quote follows them.

- Clearing it is how the mixture gets taken out of the tank.

- The lines are purged. If it ran, that petrol has shifted beyond the tank, and the fuel lines are holding it.

- Cleaned, or changed if your car has a workable one: the fuel filter is dealt with next.

- Bleeding the system follows once fresh diesel is in.

- Starting up. Once the fuel system is bled with new diesel, we fire it up and check it runs correctly.

Only when it's running on new diesel do our engineers go.

If it has been caught quickly, long-term damage is very rare, and the car returns to normal driving right away.

## After the fuel drain: back on the road in Eastcote

- Nothing unusual is needed after a start with clean diesel — ordinary driving will do.

- Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under your throttle means pull over then ring us back.

- The documents answers the query a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.

- Next time, trust the pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
