# Eastleaze: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still carrying the petrol and the motor not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is settled in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Eastleaze and the rest of Wiltshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

Phone before all else starts, and you'll learn what comes after that.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Don't crank it — and don't believe it when it starts. That is the part drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel usually just will not run, and so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and pulls away quite happily for a couple of miles. It's not okay. It is eating into your fuel system as you drive.

- Turning your ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition off.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Stay put if it is safe to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Carronbridge Road, anywhere — a tricky location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a car that never shifted.

- The van showing up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts SN5 7, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Get both ready before you dial.

- What was put in, approximately how many litres, and if the motor has started — these three answers settle the entire visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Clio, left outside Swindon since first thing? The wait has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is idle. It was the run in that pulled weakened diesel through your pump. Call us before you drive the vehicle.

## Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel at a forecourt?

Pumps are where the work usually kicks off, and where a large portion of it closes.

Our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent, and so if you are still at Asda that is usually where the drain happens.

Nowhere except a garage can this be caught with your engine still untouched.

We can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past that tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key are what determine that.

Staff will usually pitch in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next driver get by. Take the help.

Moving the car four bays doesn't merit cranking the engine.

Each start primes that fuel system and draws more of the mix out of that tank and towards the pump — which is why a motor shuffled twice into a better spot has quietly turned into a bigger job than one left just where it stopped. So if our engineers cannot work next to your diesel BMW 3 Series, we roll it without firing it. None of that is fussiness about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Asda our technicians visit regularly, and the fuel is hardly ever the awkward part: the bay is. Cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height bar at the entrance determining if our van can reach you at all. Tell us how penned in you are, and which way the car points.

## Areas we reach around Eastleaze

Westlea, Rivermead, Toothill, The Prinnels, Ramleaze — each of them on our journeys that take us over to Eastleaze itself, a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for most locations around Wiltshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list tells you nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come.

Contact us and ask instead of guessing — borders particularly, and anywhere your phone might misread.

This map outlines the ground the page includes.

Your car never needs to move to us. We operate over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Shift it out of that gateway and deal with it later — that is what somebody will say, and it's wrong. Parked on the zig-zags by Shaw Ridge Primary School, a wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 308 is a hassle and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for politeness, it's no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, because priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes past the fuel filter on to your pump. Let everyone complain. Call us.

## Eastleaze: broken down where you stopped

The opportunity to pull over somewhere suitable doesn't come to everyone.

Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Longstock Court since you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Fine where you are? Remain by it. Not fine? Climb out and clear of it.

Do not restart your engine to limp the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mix further into your fuel system.

Driving on causes the car far more harm than a van coming out to a difficult location, and that is no trouble for us.

## Petrol in a diesel, and your car has travelled

Here is where your M4 counts, under 3 miles out of Eastleaze.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Don't restart it to move it. Come off at the next safe exit then switch off.

Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 50 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our technicians bring differs.

## A little about Eastleaze

Eastleaze is a suburban area in Wiltshire, situated inland at an elevation of 109 metres, and is located approximately 25.9 miles from the city of Bath. Eastleaze forms part of a larger residential area that includes nearby Westlea, Rivermead, and Toothill. Eastleaze has a population of around 5830 people and is characterised by predominantly terraced housing. Eastleaze is also within commuting distance to London, being around 73.2 miles away.

## Our job in Eastleaze, step by step

- The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.

- Our engineers drain the tank of all the tainted mixture.

- What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what created the problem, and so your fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleaned.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- The engine is fired up and tested to make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Then it's ready to set off.

We do all of this wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught soon, it's very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

Calling from near St. Peter's Catholic Church? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it's on. Room for a technician alongside you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself scarcely counts: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we would far rather have a tight spot than a vehicle somebody has driven somewhere quicker. Then it's a drain for the Vauxhall Astra, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines rinsed, clean fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in the lines and not the tank.

## A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Eastleaze

The fault is not the same, though the opening rule is — never fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal in Eastleaze has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you ring us — some agreements want the hire firm to approve the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it later. Then call us about the Citroen C3 close to Cineworld, and do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Nearly nobody can, in a car they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out on the spot. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the blend, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Eastleaze

Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what moves it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for our van.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

If it isn't time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in Eastleaze

## Fuel drains on a Eastleaze petrol station forecourt

A good portion of this work happens there, so yes.

Our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether we can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether the engine has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving moves the trouble along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it does not replace what petrol has weakened.

Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Standing next to it?

Never turn the car on again.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off.

This is recoverable from much more regularly than drivers fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
