# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Edge Green? Don't Start It

Don't fire up the engine. If the petrol is still inside your tank and the engine has not been started, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets determined in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, throughout Edge Green and the rest of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

Phone so our team can explain what happens from here before you attempt any more.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- Never fire it up — and never trust it if it runs. This is the bit people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel normally just cannot run, so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and drives away quite happily for several miles. It isn't fine. It is grinding that fuel system as you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off also — switch it on and you frequently prime the system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for exactly those components.

- Don't add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply gives you a bigger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Millingford Avenue, anywhere — a tricky spot for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a motor that never moved.

- Before you dial, work out your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning WA3 3 — that's what settles whether our van arrives or circles.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what went in, approximately how much, and whether your car has been turned over. Those responses shape all that follows.

Do not take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through the high-pressure fuel pump in real quantity on the road in, and the drive back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Call us — the platform is good. There is no need to stand over your Renault Megane at Bryn whilst the work happens, and our team would much rather talk to you tonight than learn on Monday.

## Can petrol be drained from a diesel at the forecourt?

A good part of the work is finished at the pump, as that's where it usually kicks off.

If you are still at the forecourt at Asda, that's typically where the drain happens — our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the site's permission.

At the forecourt, this gets spotted with the engine never run, and no place else does it.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when your engine is started and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the lines together with the tank. That's still not a disaster, and we deal with it where the vehicle sits. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The attendants will generally offer to move the car clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get past. That is worth doing.

Firing the car over four vehicle lengths? Don't.

## Coverage in Edge Green

Town Green, Golborne, Ashton Heath, Stubshaw Cross, Bank Heath — all of these on our trips that carry us over to Edge Green itself, a residential suburb.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and nearly all locations in Greater Manchester have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Contact us and check rather than assuming — boundaries especially, and wherever the satnav may misread.

Check this map for the area shown here.

Your vehicle does not need to come to us. We operate over the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Hazards on. Engine off. Phone. It's twenty to nine at the gates of Golborne Community Primary School, you're late, and the till receipt shows unleaded — and even though three miles in your Ford Focus feels like nothing, fuel is supplied on demand, and a frantic dash needs plenty of that.

## Edge Green: stuck where you parked

Some people have no safe spot to pull over whatsoever.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up by the verge of Ashton Road, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards going? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you sit beside the car or move clear of it depends on if sitting in it looks safe.

Don't start up your motor to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the fuel system.

We'll send our van to a tricky place without any bother, and for the vehicle that is a lot better than driving on.

It will fire up. It will pull away perfectly well. That's the trouble, as a diesel on a diluted tank runs normally while wearing down the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, never risk the trip home from Harrow Inn — leave the Dacia Duster and call us.

## Driven it already? Pull over, and read this

This is where the M6 comes in, under 3 miles from Edge Green.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power drains away, your idle gets lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next exit that's safe, stop there, and do not start it to move it.

Suppose the worst of that on a long drive. Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you phone. What our technicians bring alters.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, so whatever occurred on the way to Golborne Park (The Bonk) in that diesel Peugeot 3008 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the engine to find more of it.

## All about Edge Green

Edge Green is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 46 metres. Edge Green lies near several nearby places, including Town Green, Golborne, and Ashton Heath, and is approximately 12.8 miles from the city of Salford. Edge Green has a population of around 2218 people and is characterised by predominantly semi-detached housing.

## What follows when our technicians reach you in Edge Green

- Our technicians check what got in, how much, and if the engine has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.

- That tank is drained of it.

- What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what started the trouble, so the fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.

- The system gets primed, on fresh diesel.

- After it is started, our engineers confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to drive away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's caught soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Hardly ever the problem, the spot. On-street is the most common place we work, and a tight parking space is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from near Old smallpox hospital site, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can stand beside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the Mercedes E-Class gets drained, the filter changed where a serviceable one exists, your lines cleaned and fresh fuel put through the entire system — as by now the worst of that is in the lines, not the tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Edge Green is a separate job

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — never crank it — yet this problem isn't.

Petrol thins the diesel and strips the lubrication the system depends on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and deposits.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal around Edge Green has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Edge Green?

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page truthfully, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

- This is the key one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.

- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.

- Where the car is, and whether a van can safely reach and work on it.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

## Petrol in diesel: common queries in Edge Green

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Edge Green?

A large portion of this work takes place there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the station's consent our engineers attend Paul Hesketh and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what moves the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more frequently than people assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different fault. So no.

Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Waiting next to it?

Your engine stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
