# Egremont: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started your engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor requires while the fuel is still inside that tank and the motor has not been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in Egremont or the remainder of Merseyside, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there.

We shall explain what the following move is. Contact us — it happens ahead of all else.

## What to try next about petrol in a diesel

- Don't fire it up. Fired up all the same? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol car typically will not run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for a few miles. Motorists get that backwards. It's not okay — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.

- Leave the car's ignition alone too. Diesel has two tasks: it ignites, and before it burns it protects your high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is often enough to prime that system, which pulls this petrol out of the tank then into exactly those components.

- Never add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it just leaves you a larger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that has not moved is the easiest one to sort out, and we'd rather travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Church Gardens, turn the hazards on then leave it there.

- Our van arriving rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode starting CH44 8, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you call.

- Three answers settle the entire visit: the fuel you poured in, the approximate quantity of it, and whether anything has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Most of this work starts at a forecourt, so a large portion of it ends up done on site.

Still at Texaco? Then that is generally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the site.

Nowhere else except a forecourt can this be spotted with the motor still cold.

Our technicians can still put it right where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that drew fuel through the filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past your tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key are what decide that.

Roll it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they normally will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Starting the car just for four vehicle lengths? No.

## Coverage around Egremont

Seacombe, Liscard, Poulton, New Brighton, Vauxhall — each of those on our journeys that take us out to Egremont as well, a residential suburb.

We still come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for most towns across Merseyside, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Ring us and ask rather than assuming — county lines above all, and wherever the satnav might struggle with.

That map is the patch this page spans.

Your car never needs to travel to us. We work throughout all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Hazards on. Motor off. Ring us. It is twenty to nine outside Egremont Primary School, you are late, and your receipt reads unleaded — and even though three miles in your Audi A4 seems like nothing, fuel is delivered on demand, and a frantic dash demands plenty of that.

## Stuck on the kerb somewhere in Egremont?

The opportunity to stop anywhere suitable does not fall to everybody.

If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Darlington Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a routine call for us instead of an unusual one.

Clear of the motor while it isn't sensible to sit in it, by it if it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Carrying on does your car far more harm than a technician driving out to an inconvenient spot, and that's no trouble for us.

Here is what a job in the car park outside Egremont Ferry usually looks like. We reach your car, ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since — those three replies settle most of the work. Then the contaminated blend comes out of that tank, your lines get flushed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a replaceable one. New diesel goes in and the fuel system is bled. Then our technicians start the car, confirm it runs properly, and you set off.

## Run it already? Pull over, and read this

under 3 miles from Egremont, your Kingsway is what matters now.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are normally a loss of power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Take the first exit that is safe, pull up there, and never start the car to reposition.

Long drive? Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in the van.

None of that is your engine failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it's why the usual Central Park call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Peugeot 208 drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, your idle lumpy and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision parts it runs through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built bleeds past gaps, delivery shows up weaker and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once the fuel is corrected.

## Egremont itself

Egremont is a suburban area on the Wirral Peninsula in Merseyside, situated near the coast and approximately 2 miles from Liverpool. Egremont is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing stock, reflecting the typical residential architecture of the North West region. Egremont sits at a relatively low elevation of 29 metres, close to the shores of the River Mersey and the Irish Sea. Egremont is part of the larger Liverpool urban area, with nearby places including Seacombe, Liscard, and Poulton.

## What happens when our technicians get to you around Egremont

- The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what got in, how much of that, and whether your engine has run.

- Out comes the tainted mixture.

- What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what caused the trouble, and so the lines get purged and the fuel filter cleared.

- Our engineers put clean diesel in and bleed your system.

- It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running properly.

That has it ready to set off.

All of this is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, lasting damage is very unusual.

Three things help when you call from close to The Heart of Egremont: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can park alongside without blocking the road, and if the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common spot our engineers work, so the place itself is rarely the issue — we'd much rather deal with a cramped parking spot than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain your Vauxhall Insignia, change the filter where there's a serviceable one, flush your lines then put clean fuel through the full circuit, as by this point the worst of that is resting in the fuel lines instead of in that tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Egremont?

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is the same — never fire it up — but this fault isn't.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Egremont page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the car — some agreements insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about the diesel Citroen C4 near Wallasey Town Hall. You'll not know how full your tank was. Hardly anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out there all the same. Our technicians ask as the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Egremont

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What shifts it:

- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

If it isn't time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Egremont drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Egremont?

A big portion of this work gets done there, so yes.

Regularly, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our engineers answer there and then.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through the system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving takes the problem along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate problem. So no.

The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to live with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.

## Still with your car?

The motor remains off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

A still, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers fear.

Call-out fuel draining around Egremont and throughout Merseyside — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
