# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Elvington? Don't Start It

Don't turn on the motor. While the petrol is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not yet been started, a drain is nearly always all it requires — and that's determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, across Elvington and the rest of Kent, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

A single ring to us is plenty: our engineers shall explain what happens after this. Make it right away.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Don't crank it — and never believe it if it fires up. Here is the thing people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just will not run, so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and moves off without complaint for several miles. It isn't fine. It's wearing the fuel system while you drive.

- Leave the ignition alone as well. Diesel has two tasks: it combusts, and before it ignites it greases the injection pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is often all it takes to prime that system, which pulls the petrol out of your tank then into exactly those components.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes — so never tip diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to handle, and so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Fairview Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started diesel.

- Before you call, have your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts CT15 4 — that's what decides whether the technician turns up or circles.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, roughly how many litres, and also whether the car has started. Those three answers shape your whole job.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Driving it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has forced real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return journey would about double the figure to no purpose. The Volkswagen Golf can stay at Shepherds Well perfectly safely. Call from the platform if easier; standing over us whilst we work isn't required.

## At the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

A large part of the work gets finished at a forecourt, as that is where it often starts.

The drain generally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Pace? Given the station's agreement, that is a place we work, and often.

Before your engine has fired — a garage is the one location it is stopped.

We can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and moved there, and that sucked fuel through your filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the staff help you move the car. Worth doing.

Shifting it four spaces doesn't warrant firing the motor.

Our technicians will get to you, clear your tank, rinse your fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can drive home. So if petrol went into your diesel Renault Clio around Elvington and you are stranded outside Co-op Food with a boot packed with shopping, phone — and never start the vehicle a second time to exit the space. A mile or so at easy throttle uses little of it, which is why those tend to be the easy cases.

## Areas our vans reach around Elvington

As a rural village, Elvington sees a frequent call, whilst the places close by go with it on the same journey: Lower Eythorne and Upper Eythorne, Eythorne and Barfrestone, Frogham.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all places in Kent, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing at all about if our engineers come.

Guessing is the mistake to resist, particularly on the boundary or anywhere your satnav gets lost. Ring us to ask.

This map marks the area this page includes.

We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle doesn't need to move to us.

## Stranded on the roadside somewhere around Elvington?

Not everyone gets a chance to pull over somewhere sensible.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Larch Road as you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it is the usual kind.

Okay right there? Sit by it. Not okay? Move out and away from it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

Our van coming to an awkward place is no bother for us, and it is far better for the car than driving on.

Park it there overnight. Phone us in the morning. Nothing about a diesel Ford Focus sitting in the parking area outside The Crown Inn worsens whilst it waits, tank of petrol or not, and the job stays a simple one right up until the moment it gets taken home. The question our technicians bring is about that trip there: a cold engine over a short run is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can get past the rings into the sump.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

under 10 miles out of Elvington, the M20 is what matters now.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Get off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and never restart it to move it.

Presume the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you call. What our engineers bring differs.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel leaks past the close-fitting parts that are meant to build that pressure, and so the further a diesel Dacia Duster went, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that trip to Eythorne Playing Field went, then, and the tank is where to look. Pull in somewhere safe, turn off then ring us.

## A little about Elvington

Elvington is a small village in Kent, situated inland at an elevation of 84 metres, approximately 9 miles from Canterbury. Elvington lies near the villages of Lower Eythorne and Upper Eythorne, and is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock. Elvington is a rural community with a population of around 712 people, located in the South East region of England, about 63 miles from London.

## Once our engineers get to you around Elvington: what happens

- Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- The polluted fuel is pulled from your tank.

- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what created the trouble, and so the lines get purged and the filter cleaned.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running correctly.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

There is no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's caught soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

Leave the BMW 5 Series close to Pentecostal Church of Elvington then ring us. We're firm about not driving on because a worn pump loses, and what it gives off passes onward with your fuel to your injectors further along.

## A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Elvington

Never crank it: that opening instruction holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the problem itself.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Elvington page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Elvington prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One price would not be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.

- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the car is, and if our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

## Elvington drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I'm on a forecourt in Elvington. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

A big portion of this work takes place there, so yes.

Often, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something we answer straight away.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that mix has been sucked through the fuel system.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable much more frequently than motorists assume.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back.

Your pump still has to put up with it, as your tank still has petrol in it later.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and the car, still together?

Shut off is the way it remains.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off.

A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers expect.

Emptying misfilled cars, Elvington and the rest of Kent, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
