# Emscote: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't turn on the motor. If the petrol is still in that tank and the motor has not run, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, all over Emscote and the rest of Warwickshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

One ring our way will be plenty: our technicians will tell you what happens next. Make this straight away.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- As you drive, the pump and the injectors suffer. That's why you never start it, and why you never rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Leave the ignition off too. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates that injection pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Switching the ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, which draws this petrol out of that tank and into precisely those components.

- Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage as that advice suggests — so never tip diesel on top to water down it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and we'd much rather travel to an awkward location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Spinney Hill, switch your hazards on and leave the vehicle there.

- Check where you are before calling. A postcode beginning CV34 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than turning up.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what got in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has been run. The replies determine whatever happens next.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, so a diesel Renault Megane left outside Warwick this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew weakened diesel through your pump was the drive in. Ring us before you set off to collect the vehicle.

## Removing petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

Plenty of the work starts at the pump, so a big part of that ends up done at one.

The drain usually takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the station's agreement, that's a place our technicians work, and routinely.

No place except a garage can it be spotted with your motor still untouched.

Our engineers can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past your tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key are what decide that.

The staff will normally help you move the car clear of the pump so the next driver can get by. That's worth doing.

Cranking it for four car lengths? Don't.

## Coverage in Emscote

The same trips bring us to Cliff Hill, Guys Cliffe, Woodloes Park, Packmores and Old Milverton as well as Emscote, which is a residential suburb.

We do come. The places above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most locations around Warwickshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Ring us to enquire rather than guessing, above all when you are on the border or anywhere a satnav struggles with.

That map shows the patch the page covers.

Every bit of that is territory our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive the vehicle anywhere.

Twenty to nine by All Saints' CofE Junior School, already late, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, call us. Three miles in the BMW 3 Series sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — while a hurried morning run asks for plenty.

## Broken down at the kerbside near Emscote

Not everyone gets a chance to pull over somewhere safe.

A common call for us instead of a rare one: realised after setting off, landed by the verge beside All Saints Road or in a lay-by with your hazards going.

Clear of the vehicle while it is not sensible to wait inside, beside it if it is.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven.

A van coming to an awkward spot is no trouble for us, and it is far better for your car than pressing on.

## Run it already? Pull in, and check this

Here is where your M40 counts, under 3 miles away from Emscote.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next exit that's sensible, pull up there, and do not start the car to reposition.

Long run? Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in the van.

Fine on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that's how that trip to The Spinney went, that tank is the place to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the tightly fitted components that are meant to build injection pressure — so the farther your Nissan Qashqai drove, the less well it held that pressure. Pull in somewhere safe, switch off and phone us.

## Where's Emscote?

Emscote is a suburban area in Warwickshire, situated on the River Avon at an elevation of 66 metres, with nearby places including Cliff Hill and Guys Cliffe. Emscote is located approximately 8 miles south of Coventry and 82 miles northwest of London, with Woodloes Park also in the vicinity. Emscote has a population of around 5506 residents, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Emscote's riverside setting provides a distinctive character to the area.

## When our engineers arrive with you around Emscote: what we do

- The replies shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.

- The tainted mixture is drawn out of your tank.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.

- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- It's run with fresh diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running properly.

That has it ready to pull away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Three things help when you call from close to The Gap Community Centre: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up beside without blocking the road, and whether your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common spot our engineers work, so the location itself is hardly ever the problem — we would much rather deal with a cramped parking spot than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain your Ford Focus, change your filter where there's a workable one, flush your lines and put clean fuel through the whole system, as by this point the worst of it is resting in your lines rather than in that tank.

## A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Emscote

Don't fire it up: that opening step holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection the system depends on.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Emscote has its own page with the details — including why it's frequently the more serious of the two.

New places are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical rather than slapdash: the narrower petrol nozzle slides into a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Fuelled up close to All Saints without thinking, in a diesel Dacia Duster you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody spots it, and mileage is what decides how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Emscote

One price wouldn't be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.

- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Emscote drivers

## I am on a forecourt around Emscote. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Plenty of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there's possible.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts a lot more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It's recoverable much more often than drivers fear, even though driving is what moves the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back.

The tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Never turn your engine on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then let it remain that way.

Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Emptying wrongly fuelled vehicles, Emscote and the rest of Warwickshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
