# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Enniskillen?

If you have not turned on the motor as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a car requires while the petrol is still inside your tank and the engine has not run, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has stopped in Enniskillen or the remainder of County Fermanagh, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Ring us and we can tell you what comes from here before you try any more.

## The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for several miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And having started, never believe it: that fuel system is wearing while you drive.

- Flicking the ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition be.

- Never add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage as that advice implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it just leaves you a fuller tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- A motor that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort out, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Rock Street? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. A difficult location suits us better than a started diesel.

- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning BT74 7, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.

- Three replies decide the whole call-out: the fuel you poured in, the ballpark amount involved, plus if it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight, a fast refuel on the drive in, and the penny drops around eleven — by which time the diesel Renault Megane has been left outside the nearest station for three hours. Phone and leave the car just where it is. The drive in is the part that matters most, because diesel does two tasks on its way through a motor: it burns, and before it ignites it protects its injection pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were travelled with the pump labouring on a fluid that had lost most of the protection it is built around — which is why the question we ask is how far you went, not how long the vehicle has been sitting.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

The job begins at a forecourt, generally. Often enough the job wraps up there too.

Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that's normally where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the owner.

A filling station is the single setting the mistake is halted before your engine has started.

Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where it is. It does mean the lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the key.

Staff will generally pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get by. Welcome the assistance.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.

The awkward part is the bay, not your fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height limit on the way in that determines if our van can get to you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at the local shops, say how much room there's around you and which way round your car is. Those our engineers cover frequently. Should there be no space to work alongside your diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, it gets rolled with your engine off, and not out of fussiness over a couple of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the blend exits that tank for the pump, and two shunts into a nicer spot have silently made a harder job of what was just a car standing still.

## Do we reach your part of Enniskillen?

Tamlaght, Trory, Bellanaleck, Arney, Skea — every one of these on the runs that carry us out to Enniskillen too, a town.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and most locations in County Fermanagh have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Phone to enquire rather than presuming — county lines above all, and anywhere your phone tends to struggle with.

Use the map for the patch included on this page.

Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is ground we serve, and none of it asks your car to come to us.

Twenty to nine. By the local primary school. Late already, and your receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Put the hazards on, leave your engine alone, and phone us. You might think three miles is nothing, in your Skoda Octavia or anything else — except that fuel is delivered to demand, and a drive taken in a hurry needs a great deal of it.

## Stranded at the roadside around Enniskillen

Not everyone finds a safe spot to pull in.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Crom Street because you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Whether you stay by the vehicle or keep away from it rests on whether being nearby seems wise.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: start it up to reach somewhere handier and the blend goes further into the system with every mile covered.

A technician heading to an inconvenient location is no bother for us, and it's far better for the car than driving on.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has rolled

Your M77 is the road that matters now, and sits over 50 miles from Enniskillen.

A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Pull off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and don't start it to move it.

It affects what we bring, and so say so when you call: on a longer drive — anything near the under 50 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel leaks past the close-fitting parts that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel BMW X1 travelled, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and gutless on the way back is how the drive to the green space at the edge of the village went, then, and that tank is the place to look. Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off then phone us.

## A little about Enniskillen

Enniskillen is a town in County Fermanagh, situated inland near the shores of Lough Erne, with a population of around 7294 people. Enniskillen sits at an elevation of 59 metres, approximately 39 miles from Armagh, and is surrounded by smaller settlements like Tamlaght, Trory, and Bellanaleck. Enniskillen has a predominance of detached housing, reflecting its character as a rural town in Northern Ireland. Enniskillen is located about 368 miles northwest of London, making it a significant urban centre in the region.

## Our call-out in Enniskillen, step by step

- The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what got in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.

- The polluted mixture is drawn from your tank.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.

- The fuel system gets primed, on new diesel.

- After it is turned on, we confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away.

Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly, and since all of this is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

## A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Enniskillen

The issue is not the same, though the first instruction is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication the system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal around Enniskillen has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's usually the more serious of the two. Our technicians handle both.

Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some agreements want the firm to authorise the work, and that's much quicker dealt with up front than later. Then give us a call about the Audi Q3, the diesel one, close to a street just off the centre. Do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was — nearly no one can two days into a motor, and it is something we check there. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger blend, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Enniskillen

What changes the price is set out below, as this job is not one job and our engineers can't frankly put a single number on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much that tank can hold.

- The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

## Questions we hear about petrol in diesel in Enniskillen

## Fuel drains on a Enniskillen petrol station forecourt

A big share of this work takes place there, so yes.

We attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more commonly than motorists fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate problem and it doesn't restore what petrol has diluted.

Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Still with your vehicle?

Keep the car shut off.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, turn it off then leave it off.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.

Throughout County Fermanagh and around Enniskillen: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
