# Everlands: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still carrying the petrol and the engine not yet started, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Throughout Everlands and the remainder of Gloucestershire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

One call our way is plenty: our engineers can tell you what happens from here. Try this first.

## What to try next about petrol in a diesel

- Never crank it — and do not depend on it if it runs. Here is the part motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel typically just cannot run, and so the person stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, idles and drives off quite happily for a couple of miles. It is not all right. It's grinding that fuel system while you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it ignites it greases — the high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition be as well: flicking it on is usually enough to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into precisely those parts.

- Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice suggests — so don't pour diesel on top to dilute it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay put if it's safe to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Ash Close, anywhere — a difficult spot for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a vehicle that never moved.

- Before you call, have your location. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning GL11 5 — that is what determines whether the technician turns up or circles.

- Three facts determine your whole job: the fuel you tipped in, the rough amount involved, and whether it has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Much of the work begins at a forecourt, meaning a large share of it gets completed on site.

Still at Texaco? Then that is typically where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the owner.

Nowhere but a forecourt can it be caught with your motor still untouched.

The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key decide how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where your car stands.

Attendants will generally help out pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Take the help.

Starting it for four car lengths? No.

## Will we serve your end of Everlands?

Upper Cam, Norman Hill, Summerhayes, Kingshill, Sandpits — all of those on our trips that bring us across to Everlands itself, a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all places across Gloucestershire, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing at all about if we come.

Phone and ask instead of assuming, above all where you're on a border or somewhere the satnav gets wrong.

This map marks the ground this page includes.

All of it is territory our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't drive your car anywhere.

Each restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol past the fuel filter then into the pump. So a misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags by Cam Everlands Primary School is an inconvenience, while the same car restarted three more times to be helpful is a fuel system and not a tank. Someone will tell you to shift the car out of that gateway and fix it later. Don't. Leave it, let people grumble, and give us a call.

## Stuck at the kerbside near Everlands

Not everyone has a decent place to pull in.

Set off, then twigged? Landed on the verge on Riverside, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Out of the motor when it's not safe to sit there, by it if it is.

Never fire it up to get to a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mixture deeper into your fuel system.

Our van coming to a difficult place is no trouble for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

You set off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and checked it runs properly on new diesel, with the fuel system bled. Before that, in the car park by The Railway, the tainted fuel comes out of the tank, your lines get rinsed and the filter comes off where your Peugeot 308 has a replaceable one. It all starts with three questions when our technicians reach the vehicle: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

## Petrol in a diesel, and your car has moved

Your M5 is the road that matters now, and it lies under 3 miles from Everlands.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power drains away, your idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next junction that is safe, pull up there, and never restart the car to move it.

On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you phone. It alters what our technicians bring.

## Where's Everlands?

Everlands is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Gloucestershire, with a relatively low elevation of around 50 metres. Everlands lies near several nearby places, including Upper Cam, Norman Hill, and Summerhayes, and is approximately 12.7 miles from Gloucester. Everlands has a population of around 4284 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Everlands is also within commuting distance to London, being around 96.6 miles away.

## The job in Everlands, step by step

- Our engineers ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers alter what the work actually is.

- The contaminated fuel is pulled from the tank.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left afterwards isn't the thing that started the issue.

- The fuel system gets bled, on new diesel.

- It's run with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running smoothly.

From there, you are ready to pull away.

Our engineers do all of it wherever the vehicle has stopped, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, it's very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

Emptying your Dacia Duster, changing the fuel filter where there's a usable one, rinsing the fuel lines, putting fresh fuel through the full circuit: that is the job, and it is shaped by the worst of that resting in the lines rather than in your tank by this point. Three things help when you phone from close to Cam War Memorial — which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand next to without blocking the road, and whether your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common location our technicians work, and so the location itself is rarely the issue. A tight parking bay trumps a motor driven somewhere more handy.

## A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Everlands

The fault is not the same, though the opening step is — do not fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol thins your diesel and removes the protection your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue in its place.

AdBlue removal around Everlands has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's usually the more serious of the two. Our engineers cover both.

A motor you collected two days ago gets driven further before anybody sees anything, which is the hire and courtesy issue in one sentence — and how far it went is what settles the amount of petrol getting to the fuel injectors. Nothing slapdash about the mistake itself: a modern diesel filler neck accepts the slimmer petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, and so unfamiliar places see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, near St George's Church or not, and we will come to the BMW 5 Series.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Everlands

What shifts the figure is set out below, as the job is not one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single number on this page.

- This is the key one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.

- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range.

If it is not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

By this point your tank is not where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that mix is in the fuel filter, the fuel lines, the pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Audi A6 that got near 3C Community Church needs your circuit cleared, not drained.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Everlands motorists

## Fuel drains on a Everlands petrol station forecourt

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Often, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something we answer on the spot.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop somewhere safe, turn off, then leave the vehicle off.

Driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more often than drivers expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, draining and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate problem and it does not restore what petrol has diluted.

After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

No. Our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Standing next to it?

That engine stays off.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
