# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Failand?

Do not fire up the engine. If the fuel is still inside your tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that's settled in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, across Failand and the remainder of Somerset, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive.

Just one ring to us will be sufficient: we shall tell you what comes next. Make this first.

## Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Whenever you drive, the pump and your injectors wear down. This is why you never crank it, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point motorists get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it protects — your high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition alone too: flicking it on is usually enough to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into just those components.

- Don't tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage as that advice presumes, and topping up removes nothing — it simply gives you a fuller tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has never moved is the quickest one to deal with, and we'd rather get to an awkward location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Old Chelsea Lane, put those hazards on and keep the vehicle there.

- Have your whereabouts prepared before you call. A postcode starting BS8 3 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between a van arriving and the van circling.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what got in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has been started. Your answers decide everything that follows.

The journey in is what sucked weakened diesel through your pump. Sitting still has drawn nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, left outside Shirehampton all day, rests idle in that tank while it waits. Ring us first — before your keys come out.

## Can petrol be taken out of a diesel on a forecourt?

The work kicks off at a pump, usually. Quite often the job finishes on site as well.

Still at MFS? Then that's typically where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the site.

Before your engine has started — a forecourt is the only setting it gets halted.

Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it is. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the keys.

Push the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that's worth doing.

Moving it four spaces doesn't warrant cranking the engine.

We are in car parks like the one at Tesco all the time, and it's hardly ever your fuel that complicates them. It is that bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height barrier at the way in, which determines whether our van reaches you at all. So mention how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way your car is facing. If there is no space to work next to the Renault Clio, our engineers roll it without your engine. That isn't fussiness over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of your tank toward your pump, and a car shuffled twice for a better bay is gradually a bigger job than one nobody touched.

## Failand plus the areas beside it

Failand is a rural village, so our team head out to it and to anywhere around it on those same journeys: Tyntesfield, Lower Failand, Cambridge Batch, Ashton Watering and Long Ashton.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we never come — there are pages for nearly all places across Somerset, and the ones listed above are simply the nearest neighbours.

Assuming is the mistake to avoid, above all on a boundary or anywhere your phone fails. Call us to ask.

The area the page includes sits on this map.

The car does not need to come to us. Our technicians work across every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Failand: stranded where you parked

The opportunity to stop somewhere sensible doesn't fall to everybody.

A common call for us rather than an unusual one: worked out after setting off, finished up by the verge on Chelsea Mews or at a lay-by with your hazards going.

Whether you remain with your car or step away from it hangs on whether staying there looks safe.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: start it up to get to somewhere safer and that mix goes further into the system with every mile covered.

Pressing on does the vehicle far more harm than our van coming out to an inconvenient location, and that's no problem for us.

What we'll want to know is if that trip there was short and cold, because that's where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and whatever doesn't burn can slip past the rings and into the oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Nissan Qashqai standing in the parking area by Failand Inn holding a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing deteriorates whilst it sits, and so park the vehicle there overnight and ring us in the morning.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

This is where the local M5 comes in, under 3 miles from Failand.

It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Come off at the next safe exit, switch off, and don't restart the car to move it.

On a longer drive — anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors, and say so when you ring. It changes what our engineers bring.

Happy on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that is how that run to Wraxall Piece went, your tank is the place to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and weaker fuel leaks past the precision parts that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the farther the Audi A4 went, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere sensible, turn off then ring us.

## About Failand

Failand is a small village in Somerset, situated inland near the city of Bristol, with a mix of rural and residential areas. Failand sits at an elevation of around 144 metres, surrounded by nearby places such as Tyntesfield and Lower Failand. Failand has a population of approximately 758 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Failand is located about 3.9 miles from Bristol and 110.4 miles from London.

## Once our engineers arrive with you in Failand: what we do

- Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- Our technicians clear your tank of all the tainted fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.

- Our technicians put new diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- It is run with new diesel in it, and we check that it's running properly.

That leaves the car ready to drive away.

Our technicians do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been spotted quickly, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

Why so blunt about leaving your keys alone? Since the pump is before the injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it sheds onward with the fuel. Call us. Leave the Ford Focus by Failand Village Hall.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Failand?

Never fire it up: that opening rule stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal in Failand has its own page with the detail — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Failand

Frankly, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what moves it:

- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much your tank holds.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run.

For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Failand motorists

## I am on a forecourt around Failand. Can you drain the car here?

A big portion of this work gets done there, so yes.

Regularly, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something we answer on the spot.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more commonly than motorists fear.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Your pump still has to cope with it, because your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Is your car still with you?

Keep the car turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later.

Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Failand and across Somerset.
