# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fallside

Don't start the engine. If the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not yet been started, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that is determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, across Fallside and the rest of North Lanarkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

Just one call to us will be enough: our technicians shall explain what follows after this. Try that first.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for several miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And having started, never depend on it: the fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Switching the ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition be.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Stay where you are if you safely can. A motor that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort, and our team would sooner travel to an odd place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on John Brannan Way, put your hazards on then keep it there.

- Keep your whereabouts prepared before you call. A postcode that starts G71 6 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van showing up and our van circling.

- Three facts determine the whole job: the liquid you poured in, the rough quantity involved, plus whether anything has been turning since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

## On the forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

A large chunk of the job gets completed at a pump, as that is where it usually starts.

The drain usually happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the site's permission, that's a spot our technicians work, and routinely.

Before your engine has fired — a forecourt is the one spot the mistake ends up spotted.

Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and moved there, and that drew fuel through your filter and into your high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to reach past your tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys are what settle that.

Staff will usually help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the assistance.

Starting it just for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

## Will our engineers reach your side of Fallside?

As a residential suburb, Fallside sees a frequent visit, and the villages round about go along on that same trip: Viewpark and Orbiston, Bellshill and Tannochside, Uddingston.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of towns around North Lanarkshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from this list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether we come.

Presuming is the thing to resist, particularly on the border or somewhere your satnav fails. Phone and check.

That map marks the ground this page spans.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground our technicians serve, and none of that needs the vehicle to move to us.

Each restart primes the fuel lines and drags more petrol past the fuel filter then into your pump. So a misfuelled diesel Nissan Qashqai on the zig-zags outside the local primary school is a hassle, while the same vehicle started three more times to be polite is a fuel system and not a tank. Somebody will tell you to shift the car out of that gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. Leave it, let them moan, then ring us.

## Stuck at the kerbside around Fallside

Not everybody gets the chance to stop anywhere sensible.

A common call for us instead of a rare one: realised after setting off, ended up on the verge of Sanderson Avenue or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Out of the motor when it's not wise to wait in it, beside it if it is.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere handier and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled.

Pressing on does your car far more harm than a van heading out to a tricky place, and that's no problem for us.

Three replies decide most of the work: what went in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for them as soon as we reach the car in the car park by The Jazz Cafe. After that the contaminated mixture comes out of the tank, your lines are rinsed, and where your Audi A4 has a serviceable filter, it comes off. When fresh diesel is in and your system primed, we start the car and make sure it runs properly before you pull away.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under a mile from Fallside, your M74 is what matters now.

Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone.

It changes what our technicians bring, so say so when you phone: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Stop somewhere safe, turn off and call us. Fine on the way out to Fallside Nature Park, flat on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol weakens diesel; runnier fuel seeps past the precision parts that build injection pressure; and the further your diesel Ford Focus went, the less of that pressure it held.

## A bit about Fallside

Fallside is a suburban area situated on the riverside in North Lanarkshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities. Fallside lies close to the nearby settlements of Viewpark, Orbiston, and Bellshill, and is approximately 7.7 miles from Glasgow. Fallside has a population of around 2936 people and is located at an elevation of 76 metres. Fallside is also relatively distant from London, at around 338.6 miles away.

## What we do when our engineers reach you around Fallside

- The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.

- The tainted mixture comes from the tank.

- Our technicians clean your fuel lines and clear your filter, so what is remaining in your system is not what caused the issue.

- Our engineers put clean diesel in and bleed the system.

- The motor is turned on and tested to make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away.

Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted soon, and since all of this is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

Emptying the Mercedes E-Class, changing the filter where there is a workable one, flushing the fuel lines, putting fresh fuel through the whole circuit: that is this job, and it's shaped by the worst of that waiting in the lines instead of in that tank by this point. Three things help when you phone from close to Fallside Community Centre — which side the filler is on, whether a van can pull up next to without blocking the road, and whether your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place our technicians work, so the location itself is rarely the problem. A narrow parking spot trumps a motor driven somewhere more convenient.

## Fallside AdBlue removal is a different job

The fault is not the same, though the first instruction is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system relies on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Fallside page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Fallside costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What shifts the figure is set out below, as this job is not one job and we cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much that tank can hold.

- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for our van.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range.

Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Put right and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your system: our technicians flush it, and take the filter off where there is a serviceable one. Compare that with the confident suggestion you'll get — drain the car, refill with new diesel. Only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Vauxhall Corsa by Robertson Park and it'll start, which is precisely why the advice sounds reasonable. Then your engine pulls the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, since draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.

## Fallside drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Fallside?

Yes, and it's where a good portion of this work happens.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's agreement our engineers work at Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving shifts the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is the car still with you?

Turned off is how it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Fallside and throughout North Lanarkshire.
