# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Firwood Fold

If you have not fired up your engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car needs while the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not yet run, which is why it's the coming few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Firwood Fold or the rest of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Contact us before all else happens, so you'll hear what happens after that.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for a couple of miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't start it. And having started, never depend on it: that fuel system is wearing as you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it lubricates — your high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition alone as well: flicking it on is usually enough to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into just those parts.

- Never dilute it. Diesel tipped on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and we'd sooner get to a tricky place than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Ashdown Drive, turn your hazards on and keep the car there.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting BL2 3, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.

- What went in, roughly how many litres, and also whether the car has started — those three details settle the whole job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Quarter past eight, a quick top-up on the road in, and you realise close to eleven — by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has been standing outside Hall i' th' Wood for three hours. Call us then keep the vehicle precisely where it is. The drive in is the part that counts most, since diesel performs two tasks on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before it burns it protects that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were driven with your pump working on a fuel that had shed a great deal of the protection it is made for — which is why the question we ask is how many miles you went, not how long the motor has been parked.

## At the forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

The work kicks off at a forecourt, usually. Quite often it wraps up there as well.

If you're still on the forecourt at Texaco, that is usually where the drain gets done — our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's permission.

No place other than the forecourt can it be spotted with the motor still unstarted.

Our engineers can still deal with it where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past the tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next customer get through. Welcome the assistance.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.

Car parks like the one outside Co-op Food are somewhere we work in frequently, and the fuel is seldom the complicated part. The bay is: cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height bar on the way in that decides whether a van can reach you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you call, and which way the car is pointing. If our engineers cannot work beside the diesel Renault Megane we'll shift the vehicle without firing it — and that's not fussiness about a couple of seconds of running. Every start primes the fuel system and sucks more of that blend out of your tank and toward your pump, and so a car shuffled twice into a better spot has silently become a harder job than one left just where it stopped.

## Firwood Fold plus the towns beside it

Those same journeys bring us to Castle Hill, Hall i th Wood, Top o th Brow, Bottom o th Moor and Bradshaw along with Firwood Fold, which is a residential suburb.

Not on the list? That means nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and the majority of locations in Greater Manchester have a page of their own elsewhere on this site.

Call us to enquire instead of presuming, above all when you are on a border or somewhere your phone can't find.

The patch this page spans appears on the map.

The vehicle never needs to come to us. Our technicians work throughout every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Your diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt entirely normal on the way back from Castle Hill Primary School. They always do, and that's the catch with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it usually won't run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, idles and pulls away as though nothing has happened — all while your high-pressure pump works without the lubrication your fuel is meant to be supplying. Nothing alerts you, because from the driver's seat there is nothing to alert you about. Phone us with about how far you travelled and how hard you drove it; the second answer counts more than the first.

## Firwood Fold: stuck wherever you parked

A chance to stop anywhere suitable does not come to everybody.

If you worked it out after setting off and landed on the verge of Hartwell Close, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a normal call for us rather than a rare one.

Remain with the car while it's safe to wait there, but out of the vehicle when it isn't.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to get to somewhere handier and the mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven.

Our van driving to a tricky location is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for the car than carrying on.

## Petrol in a diesel, but your car has moved

under 5 miles from Firwood Fold, the local St. Peter's Way is what matters here.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be smoke.

Take the first junction that's sensible, stop there, and don't restart the vehicle to reposition.

Assume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you phone. What our engineers bring differs.

## A little about Firwood Fold

Firwood Fold is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated near several lakes and waterways at an elevation of around 98 metres. Firwood Fold lies within a network of residential communities, including nearby Castle Hill, Hall i th Wood, and Top o th Brow. Firwood Fold is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, reflecting the typical residential architecture of the region. Firwood Fold is located approximately 9 miles from Salford and 173 miles from London.

## What comes next when we get to you in Firwood Fold

- Our technicians check what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.

- The tainted mixture is pulled from your tank.

- Our engineers clean your fuel lines and clean your filter, and so what is left in your system isn't what caused the issue.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- It is run with new diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it's running correctly.

From that point, you are ready to drive away.

We do all of this wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught soon, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

Why so direct about leaving the keys alone? Because your pump is upstream of the fuel injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it sheds onward with the fuel. Call us. Leave the BMW 5 Series close to Tonge Cricket Club.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Firwood Fold?

The problem is not the same, though the opening instruction is — don't fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol thins your diesel and removes the protection the fuel system depends on.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal around Firwood Fold has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. We deal with both.

The slimmer petrol nozzle slides into a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not sloppy. Unfamiliar places see most of that for that reason. So: filled up close to St Andrew's Methodist Church Hall without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes A-Class you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anyone spots it, and mileage decides how much petrol ends up at the injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Firwood Fold

One number wouldn't be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- This is the main one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much the tank takes.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a van.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Firwood Fold

## At a petrol station in Firwood Fold, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this takes place.

We attend Shell and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix pulled through it.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable far more commonly than drivers assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not a change, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores.

The pump still has to live with it, as your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. We drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with the car?

Leave the engine turned off.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off.

Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best place available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Greater Manchester and around Firwood Fold: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
