# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fitzwilliam?

With that tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet started, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep the engine off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that got in. Across Fitzwilliam and the rest of West Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

A single ring to us is enough: our engineers can explain what happens after this. Try that first.

## What to try next about petrol in a diesel

- Never crank it — and never rely on it when it runs. This is the bit motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel usually just will not run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, idles and drives off just fine for several miles. It isn't fine. It is wearing that fuel system as you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition stays off as well — flick it on and you usually prime the system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for just those parts.

- Do not add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage as that advice assumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Prince Drive, anywhere — a difficult location for us beats a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a car that never shifted.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting WF9 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, roughly how much, and whether the car has fired. Those three replies settle the full job.

Don't run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through your high-pressure pump in real volume on the road in, and the drive back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is fine. There is no need to stand over that Skoda Octavia outside the nearest station while the work goes on, and our team would far rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.

## Can petrol be pumped from a diesel at the forecourt?

Forecourts are where the job often starts, and where a fair part of that finishes.

If you are still at the forecourt at Esso, that's generally where this drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's permission.

The forecourt is the only spot it can be caught before the engine has run.

The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where the vehicle stands.

The attendants will normally offer to move it out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. It is worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Our technicians will get to you, empty the tank, clean the fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into your diesel Dacia Duster around Fitzwilliam and you are stuck outside Co-op Food with a boot packed with shopping, ring us — and don't fire it up a second time to leave that spot. A mile or so at gentle throttle draws very little diesel, so those tend to be the easy cases.

## Will our engineers serve your part of Fitzwilliam?

Fitzwilliam is a rural village, and we head out to it and to the places around it on the same runs: Kinsley, Wragby, Newstead, Brackenhill and Havercroft.

Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and the majority of locations in West Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

Ring us and check rather than assuming, particularly when you are on the boundary or somewhere a satnav gets wrong.

The map shows the ground this page covers.

Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the vehicle never needs to come to us.

## Broken down by the kerbside around Fitzwilliam

A chance to pull in somewhere safe doesn't come to everybody.

If you worked it out after setting off and finished up on the verge beside Wakefield Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a normal call for us and not an unusual one.

Out of the car when it's not safe to sit there, by it when it is.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere better and that mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered.

Pressing on does the vehicle far more harm than our van heading out to a tricky spot, and that is no problem for us.

What we will ask is whether that run there was short and cold, because that's where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and whatever won't burn can get past the piston rings then into the sump. Right up to the moment somebody drives it home, a diesel Mercedes E-Class sitting in the parking area outside Hemsworth Miners Welfare FC with a tank of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing deteriorates as it stands, so leave the car overnight and call us in the morning.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

The local M62 is the road which matters now, and sits under 5 miles from Fitzwilliam.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are usually a drop in power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Long run? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it changes what goes in our van.

## Fitzwilliam itself

Fitzwilliam is a village in West Yorkshire, situated approximately 6 miles from Wakefield and 156 miles from London, with a population of around 2056 people. Fitzwilliam sits at an elevation of 68 metres, surrounded by nearby places such as Kinsley, Wragby, and Newstead. Fitzwilliam has a predominance of semi-detached housing, reflecting its development as a residential community. Fitzwilliam remains a small inland village with a local character shaped by its rural setting.

## When our technicians get to you in Fitzwilliam: what we do

- Our engineers establish what went in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.

- The polluted mixture is pulled out of that tank.

- What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what caused the trouble, so the fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleared.

- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it's running correctly.

That has the car ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed early, and as all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Fitzwilliam is a different matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas the issue underneath it is a different one altogether.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and deposits.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Fitzwilliam page. Both are ours to handle.

A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anyone sees anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the quantity of petrol getting to the injectors. Nothing slapdash about the mistake itself: a newer diesel filler neck takes the smaller petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, and so strange spots see most of these. Phone us from wherever you are, by Kinsley Church Of The Resurrection or not, and we will head to the Audi A6.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Fitzwilliam

One price wouldn't be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for our van.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure properly, not the motor giving up — and with no warning light for it, motors in that position generally get driven once more before somebody calls. Don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Citroen C3 now waiting close to Fitzwilliam And Kinsley Community Centre. Switch it off then ring us.

## Fitzwilliam drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I am on a forecourt around Fitzwilliam. Can you drain the vehicle here?

A big part of this work gets done there, so yes.

We visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run matters much more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

It's salvageable a lot more often than people assume, even though driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, draining and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct issue and it doesn't restore what petrol has thinned.

Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Standing next to it?

Your engine stays off.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from much more often than drivers expect, and a stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around Fitzwilliam and throughout West Yorkshire.
