# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fleetwood?

With your tank still carrying the petrol and your engine not yet run, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep the engine off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after the fill-up, and not by the amount that went in. Throughout Fleetwood and the rest of Lancashire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Phone before all else happens, and you will see what follows next.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for several miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start it. And if started, don't trust it: the fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition alone too. Diesel does two tasks: it ignites, and before it combusts it protects that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is usually all it takes to prime that system, which pulls this petrol out of that tank then into just those parts.

- Never thin it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to handle, and we would rather drive to a tricky location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on West View Roundabout, switch the hazards on and keep the car there.

- A van showing up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts FY7 8, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Get both ready before you call.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what went in, approximately how many litres, and if the car has been started. Those answers decide all that comes after.

The high-pressure fuel pump did that morning run running on a liquid that had given up a lot of the protection it is built around. Diesel greases that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of the fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So imagine a diesel Volkswagen Golf, filled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked standing at Poulton-Le-Fylde until you realise around eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that did a lot, which is why the question our technicians ask is about mileage rather than hours. Phone. Keep it just where it is.

## Can petrol be drained from a diesel at the forecourt?

Forecourts are where the work often kicks off, and where a large portion of it closes.

The drain typically takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the station's permission, that's somewhere our engineers work, and often.

Before your motor has run — a forecourt is the one location the mistake is halted.

The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the keys determine how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where the vehicle stands.

The staff will normally help you push it out from the pump so the next motorist can get through. It is worth doing.

Starting it to shift four car lengths is not.

## Coverage around Fleetwood

Fleetwood is a coastal town, so our vans get out to the town and to the places near it on those same runs: Larkholme, Rossall Beach, Pheasant Wood, Cleveleys and Burn Naze.

There are pages for most places in Lancashire, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being left off the list says nothing whatsoever about whether our technicians come.

Presuming is the habit to resist, particularly on the boundary or somewhere the satnav goes wrong. Contact us and enquire.

Use our map for the patch shown on this page.

The car does not need to come to us. Our technicians work throughout all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Your diesel Nissan Qashqai will have felt perfectly ordinary on the way back from Fleetwood Flakefleet Primary School. They always do, and that is the catch with petrol in a diesel rather than the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it usually will not run, so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, ticks over and moves off as though nothing has happened — all the while the high-pressure pump keeps working without the lubrication your fuel is meant to be providing. Nothing alerts you, since from behind the wheel there's nothing to caution you about. Phone with approximately how far you travelled and how hard you pushed it; the second one matters more than the first.

## Fleetwood: stuck where you parked

Some people have no safe place to pull over whatsoever.

Set off, then noticed? Ended up by the verge of Grange Road, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Sit with the car when it's sensible to wait in it, and out of it if it's not.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Carrying on does your car far more harm than our van coming out to a difficult spot, and that is no problem for us.

Easy job, this one — till somebody drives it home. A diesel Audi A4 left outside Queens with petrol in the tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so park it then phone us once it's light. Expect a question about the run there, though. Short and chilly is exactly where petrol battles to burn, and what won't burn can get past the piston rings then into the sump.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

The local M55 is the road which matters now, and sits under 10 miles from Fleetwood.

Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

It alters what our technicians bring, so tell us when you ring: on a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel leaks past the close-fitting components that are meant to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Dacia Duster travelled, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that run to Memorial Park went, then, and the tank is the place to look. Stop somewhere sensible, switch off then call us.

## A little about Fleetwood

Fleetwood is a coastal town in Lancashire, situated on the Fylde coast at a low elevation of around 7 metres. Fleetwood lies approximately 13 miles north of Lancaster and 206 miles northwest of London, with nearby areas including Larkholme and Rossall Beach. Fleetwood has a mix of housing types, but terraced housing is predominant in the town. Fleetwood is home to around 21,343 people, according to recent estimates.

## What our technicians do when our technicians reach you around Fleetwood

- Three things get established before any price — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- Out flows the contaminated fuel.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that caused the issue.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.

- Our engineers start the car and make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

That leaves the car ready to set off.

All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, lasting damage is very rare.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Fleetwood?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas this issue under it's a separate one altogether.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue in its place.

AdBlue removal in Fleetwood has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

Most of these occur somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical instead of slapdash — almost no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Citroen C3, a fill-up near Westview Community Centre that you didn't think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the injectors.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Fleetwood

What moves the figure is laid out below, because the job isn't one job and we can't honestly put a single number on this page.

- This is the key one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much that tank can hold.

- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

## Fleetwood drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station in Fleetwood, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this happens.

We visit Asda and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run matters far more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave the car off.

Driving takes the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back.

The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to live with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is your car still with you?

Turned off is the way it remains.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, turn off, and let the vehicle stay that way.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.

Across Lancashire and around Fleetwood: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
