# Flitwick: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, never switch your motor on, even for a moment, to shift the vehicle. Pause; leave the vehicle off.

Petrol in a diesel that has not been run is usually a drain plus a flush, done where the vehicle sits, and what happens in the next few minutes determines that more than anything else.

Here is the order of things from now, anywhere you are around Flitwick.

## Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

Work through the following in sequence, before you do anything else.

- Keys out of the ignition. Switching the ignition on can be enough to prime your fuel system, and priming pulls petrol out of the tank toward the parts it harms. Keep it off completely.

- Topping up with diesel seems like it thins the issue. It does not: nothing comes out, and that tank simply holds more of the same.

- Close to passing traffic? Then your hazards come on before everything else, so the vehicle is simple to see.

- The attendants will normally help you push it clear of the pump. Ask, and move it by hand — not under the engine, even for a couple of yards.

- Which fuel, and about how much? The receipt answers that, and that is where our questions start. Never bin it.

On the M1, under 3 miles from Flitwick, the next exit is the place to come off; anywhere, the first sensible place to stop. Do not push on to the services. Then go back to stage one.

## Each Flitwick fuel drain starts here: has your motor run?

Everything after this stage depends on one answer.

If your engine hasn't run at all:

- Just that tank has petrol in it so far.

- Draining and flushing, on the spot, is normally the whole job.

- No position is better, and it's why the first stage counts so much.

Run at all, however briefly:

- Petrol has been drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the fuel lines.

- The high-pressure fuel pump as well as the injectors see it too on a longer run.

- Flushing the lines, the filter sorted, occasionally more: the job expands as the distance does.

That line falls there because diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not.

Petrol resting in a tank damages nothing.

Petrol being pumped is wearing the components that move it.

## What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Flitwick

Whether the van goes round or finds you depends on a little planning.

- Where you are. A postcode starting MK45 1 is the best start.

- The road or the car park. A road name is a help — Dunstable Road, or wherever you have stopped.

- What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, and so mention the landmark — like the one outside Tesco.

- The vehicle. Make, model, plus that it's a diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Flitwick page.

- Roughly how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.

- Whether it has run. Then if it has, how far and how hard.

- Sort who owns the vehicle ahead of when our engineers arrive: some hire or company contracts want the owner to authorise the work, and that is faster first.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not urgent, the vehicle left at home with nowhere to be? Then will do as well.

## The wait for a Flitwick fuel drain, and what to do in it

In the wait, the damage comes from well-intended help — which is why these matter.

- Where your car has stopped settles where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety before the car.

- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being helpful, not to check it is all right, not to roll the car a couple of yards.

- Additives remain in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of the petrol out once more.

- Draining it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond your tank remains where it is regardless.

- Leave your ignition off — your windows and the radio included.

## Van arrived? The fuel drain, one stage at a time

- The price comes after three questions, not before them — what went in, how much, and whether it has run — because the answers decide the job.

- Clearing it is how that mixture gets taken out of the tank.

- Petrol that has moved beyond that tank sits in the fuel lines once it ran, and the lines are rinsed to shift it.

- Then the fuel filter: swapped where there is a workable one, cleared where there is not.

- The fuel system is primed on clean diesel.

- Starting the car. When your system is bled with new diesel, our engineers fire it up and check it runs properly.

Our technicians wait until it's running on clean diesel.

If it has been noticed soon, permanent damage is very uncommon, and your car goes back to normal use straight away.

## Once the fuel drain is done: driving around Flitwick again

- Nothing unusual is needed after a start with clean diesel — normal driving will do.

- The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your signal to stop and ring us again.

- The paperwork answers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.

- Next time, trust the pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
