# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fordley?

Don't turn on the engine. While the petrol is still inside your tank and the engine has not turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets determined in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, all over Fordley and the rest of Tyne and Wear, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

Ring us and then our team shall explain what follows after that before you attempt any more.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine enough for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't fire it up. And if started, do not believe it: the fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Switching the car's ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition off.

- Don't weaken it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- A vehicle that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Front Street? Hazards on, then keep the car there. An odd location works for us better than a started motor.

- Before you ring, get your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning NE23 7 — that is what settles whether the van shows up or circles.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what was put in, approximately how much, plus whether the motor has been run. Your responses shape all that follows.

Quarter past eight, a quick refuel on the road in, and the penny drops close to eleven — by which time your diesel Volkswagen Golf has been standing outside Seaton Delaval for three hours. Ring us and keep the vehicle exactly where it is. The trip in is the thing that matters here, as diesel performs two roles on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before it burns it protects the injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those few miles were done with your pump labouring on a fuel that had lost a great deal of the protection it is built around — which is why the question our technicians ask is how many miles you drove, not how long the car has been sitting.

## Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on the forecourt?

Pumps are where the job often starts, and where a fair chunk of it closes.

If you're still at the forecourt at BP, that's usually where this drain happens — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the station's consent.

Nowhere other than a forecourt can the mistake be spotted with the motor still unrun.

Our engineers can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to go past that tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys are what determine that.

Roll the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.

## Coverage in Fordley

Being a residential suburb, Fordley sees a frequent visit, whilst its neighbours nearby go with it on that same trip: Dudley and Burradon, Annitsford and Camperdown, Southfield Lea.

Not on that list? That means nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and the majority of towns in Tyne and Wear have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Presuming is the thing to skip, above all on a border or somewhere the satnav goes wrong. Phone to enquire.

See our map for the patch shown here.

Your vehicle doesn't need to come to us. We work over all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stranded at the kerbside in Fordley

Not everyone has a suitable place to stop.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Fern Drive since you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Whether you sit with the vehicle or move away from it hangs on if being nearby seems wise.

Do not restart it to get to a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that blend deeper into the fuel system.

However tricky the spot, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that's much better for the car than carrying on.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

under 10 miles out of Fordley, the A167(M) is what counts now.

It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the next junction that is sensible, pull up there, and don't restart the car to move it.

Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you call. What our engineers bring changes.

Here is the entire process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the normal Burradon Recreation Ground call — a diesel Audi A4, out there without complaint and back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it leaks past those tolerances and not building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than your engine was designed around. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## A little about Fordley

Fordley is a suburban area located on the riverside in Tyne and Wear, with an elevation of 51 metres. Fordley sits near the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, approximately 5.6 miles away, and is surrounded by other nearby places such as Dudley, Burradon, and Annitsford. Fordley has a population of around 2739 people and predominantly features semi-detached housing. Fordley is situated in the North East region of England, about 252.4 miles from London.

## Our visit around Fordley, step by step

- The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.

- The polluted mixture comes out of the tank.

- Our technicians rinse your fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what is left in the fuel system is not what caused the issue.

- Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.

- It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and we make sure that it's running smoothly.

That leaves your car ready to pull away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Ringing from close to The Jubilee Court Centre? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it's on. Room for our van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself scarcely counts: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we would far rather have a narrow space than a motor a person has driven somewhere easier. Then it is a drain for the Mercedes C-Class, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines flushed, fresh fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in the lines and not that tank.

## Fordley AdBlue removal is a different problem

Don't crank it: that opening rule holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

AdBlue removal around Fordley has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. We deal with both.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, an uneven idle, rattling: that's a wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 3008 telling you what is wrong. Don't restart the car to find a better place — turn off where you have stopped, close to Burradon Tower or anywhere else.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Fordley

Our technicians can't put one number on this page honestly, since the job isn't one job. What changes it:

- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much the tank can hold.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and if a van can safely reach and work on it.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

That deadness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the engine giving up — and with no dashboard light for it, vehicles in that position usually get driven once more before anybody phones. Do not. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Vauxhall Insignia now waiting near St Paul. Turn it off then phone us.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Fordley motorists

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Fordley?

A fair share of this work takes place there, so yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave it off.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more often than drivers assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Your engine stays off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later on.

This is recoverable from much more often than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
