# Forth: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not fire up your engine. If the petrol is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that's decided in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, throughout Forth and the remainder of South Lanarkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

One ring our way is enough: our team shall tell you what follows from here. Make this straight away.

## What to try first about petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not crank it. And once started, don't believe it: that fuel system is grinding while you drive.

- Flicking the ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition be.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes — so never add diesel on top to dilute it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We would sooner get to a tricky place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Kirk Green, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.

- Keep your whereabouts ready before you phone. A postcode that starts ML11 8 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van showing up and the van circling.

- What got in, approximately how many litres, and if the car has started — the three facts determine the full call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Ring us before you collect the car. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Golf this morning, and the vehicle at Fauldhouse ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is idle, and any harm was done on the run in, when the pump was pulling diesel that petrol had diluted.

## On the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

Most of the job starts at a forecourt, meaning a large part of it is done at one.

If you are still on the forecourt at Esso, that's typically where this drain happens — we operate on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.

Nowhere except a garage can this be caught with the motor still untouched.

We can still put it right where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to reach past that tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for your key are what determine that.

Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the staff help you roll the vehicle. Very much worth it.

Shifting the car four spaces doesn't merit firing the engine.

## Will we serve your side of Forth?

Being a rural village, Forth has a regular call, and the places nearby come with it on that same trip: Wilsontown and Rootpark, Greenwall and Stobwood, Climpy.

Our technicians do come. The names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most places around South Lanarkshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Ring us and check instead of assuming — boundaries especially, and wherever a satnav might misread.

The map shows the ground the page includes.

The car doesn't need to come to us. We work across every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of the local primary school. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Put the hazards on, leave the ignition alone, then ring us. You could think three miles is nothing, in your Ford Focus or anything else — except that fuel is supplied on demand, and a dash taken in a rush demands a great deal of it.

## Forth: stuck where you pulled up

Some people have no suitable spot to pull over whatsoever.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Reid Street since you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the usual kind.

Remain beside the car when it is wise to wait inside, and out of it when it's not.

Never restart it to reach a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into your fuel system.

We'll take our van to a difficult location without any bother, and for the vehicle that's far better than pressing on.

Here is what a job in the car park by the pub in the village typically looks like. Our engineers arrive at the vehicle, ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since — these three replies settle much of the work. Then the contaminated mix comes out of your tank, the lines get rinsed, and the filter comes off where your Mercedes E-Class has a replaceable one. New diesel goes in and the fuel system is bled. Then our engineers start it, confirm it runs smoothly, and you drive away.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

under 10 miles out of Forth, the local M8 is what counts here.

Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

It alters what our engineers bring, so say so when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off then phone us. Normal on the way out to Wester Heathland, gutless on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol thins diesel; runnier fuel slips past the tightly fitted components that build injection pressure; and the farther your diesel BMW 1 Series went, the less of that pressure it held.

## Where's Forth?

Forth is a small village in South Lanarkshire, situated inland at an elevation of 285 metres. Forth lies approximately 22 miles southeast of Glasgow, and is surrounded by nearby places such as Wilsontown, Rootpark, and Greenwall. Forth has a population of around 1354 people, and its predominant housing stock consists of terraced homes. Forth is located relatively far from London, at a distance of around 328 miles.

## What follows when we arrive with you around Forth

- Our technicians find out what got in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.

- Away comes the tainted mixture.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.

- Your system gets bled, on clean diesel.

- Our technicians start it and check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

At that point it is ready to set off.

There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is caught early, permanent damage is very rare.

## A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Forth

The problem isn't the same, though the first instruction is — don't start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication the system relies on.

Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal in Forth has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. We deal with both.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Forth?

What moves the figure is laid out below, because the job isn't one job and our engineers cannot truthfully put a single figure on this page.

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much that tank can hold.

- The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for our van.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range.

If it isn't urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went soft, the idle turned uneven, and your diesel Peugeot 208 is now resting close to Forth And District Miners Memorial. That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully rather than the motor failing — and since there's no warning for it, motors in that position usually get driven again before somebody phones. Don't. Turn it off then phone us.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Forth motorists

## Fuel drains on a Forth petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a large share of this work happens.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town regularly.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

What determines how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Driving takes the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has weakened isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct issue. So no.

Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Do not switch the engine on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and let the car remain that way.

A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than drivers assume.

Emptying misfilled motors, Forth and the rest of South Lanarkshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
