# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fosdyke?

If you have not fired up your engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a car needs while the petrol is still in that tank and the engine has not turned over, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has come to rest in Fosdyke or the rest of Lincolnshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Ring us before everything else happens, so you'll know what happens next.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- Never crank it — and never trust it when it starts. This is the part drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel generally just can't run, so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, ticks over and moves off perfectly well for several miles. It is not okay. It's wearing the fuel system while you drive.

- Leave the ignition be also. Diesel does two roles: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is often sufficient to prime your system, which moves that petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has not moved is the easiest one to deal with, and we'd much rather drive to an odd location than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Old Main Road, turn your hazards on and leave the car there.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode starting PE20 2, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.

- Three facts determine the full call-out: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate amount involved, and whether it has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

## On a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Most of the job starts at a pump, so a large portion of that ends up completed on site.

If you are still on the forecourt at BP, that is typically where this drain gets done — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent.

At a forecourt, the mistake gets stopped with the engine never started, and no place else does that.

Our technicians can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been started and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to reach past your tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key are what decide that.

Roll the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next customer gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Starting the car to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

## Fosdyke plus the villages near it

Being a coastal village, Fosdyke sees a routine call, whilst the areas round about go with it on the same run: Fosdyke Bridge and Bucklegate, Seadyke and Algarkirk, Sutterton Dowdyke.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and most towns in Lincolnshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Guessing is the habit to resist, particularly on a boundary or somewhere your phone fails. Phone and check.

Use this map for the ground included on this page.

The car never needs to move to us. We operate across all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Fosdyke: stranded where you parked

The opportunity to stop somewhere safe doesn't come to everybody.

A routine call for us rather than an odd one: noticed after setting off, ended up on the verge beside Puttock Gate or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Clear of the car while it is not safe to wait inside, by it if it is.

Do not start it up to reach a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mixture deeper into the system.

Carrying on does the car far more harm than a van heading out to a difficult spot, and that is no trouble for us.

Easy job, this one — till somebody drives it home. A diesel Mercedes C-Class parked by The Ship Inn with petrol in the tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, and so park the vehicle then ring us once it's light. Expect a question about that drive there, though. Short and chilly is precisely where petrol battles to burn, and what won't burn can slip past the rings and into the sump.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

The local A1(M) is the road that counts now, and it lies under 50 miles from Fosdyke.

Lost power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Long drive? Anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it alters what goes in our van.

Out there happy, back gutless. If that was the trip to Moulton Marsh Nature Reserve, look at the tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the close tolerances meant to build injection pressure — so every extra mile your diesel BMW 1 Series covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, call us.

## A bit about Fosdyke

Fosdyke is a small village in eastern England, situated near the coast of Lincolnshire at a low elevation of around 5 metres. Fosdyke lies close to Fosdyke Bridge and other nearby settlements like Bucklegate and Seadyke, and is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock. Fosdyke is located near the larger city of Peterborough, which is about 23 miles away, and is around 95 miles north of London.

## Once our engineers get to you around Fosdyke: what happens

- Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- The tank is drained of everything.

- Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that is not the thing that created the trouble.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- It's run with clean diesel in it, and we make sure that it's running smoothly.

From that point, you are ready to drive away.

There is no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Ringing from near Fosdyke Village Hall? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it is on. Room for a van next to you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself hardly counts: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we would much rather have a tight spot than a vehicle a person has driven somewhere simpler. Then it's a drain for the Peugeot 208, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines flushed, clean fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of that is in the lines and not that tank.

## A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Fosdyke

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor stays off — while this problem under it is a distinct one altogether.

The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Fosdyke page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

A vehicle you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anybody spots anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what settles the amount of petrol arriving at your injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a newer diesel filler neck takes the slimmer petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, and so strange places see most of these. Call us from wherever you are, close to Fosdyke Village Sign or not, and we will come to the Citroen C3.

## Fosdyke prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what varies it:

- This is the key one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much your tank holds.

- The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Drain it and put clean diesel in — that is the suggestion you will get, usually from someone certain, and it's half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Kia Sportage close to All Saints and it would start, which is what makes the advice sound reasonable. What occurs next is the issue: the engine straight away draws the petrol left sitting in the fuel filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. Our technicians flush your system and take the filter off where your vehicle has a workable one, which is the difference between the vehicle being put right and the car simply starting.

## Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Fosdyke

## Fuel drains on a Fosdyke petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this takes place.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's agreement we visit Shell and the other forecourts locally all the time.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run.

What decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more regularly than people fear.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't a modification, so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate problem. So no.

Your pump still has to live with it, because your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

## Standing next to it?

The motor remains off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists fear, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.
