# Foulride Green: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet run, almost every job takes only a drain, so keep the motor off. That outcome is determined in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that got in. All over Foulride Green and the rest of East Sussex, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Phone and our technicians shall show you what comes next before you do much else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for several miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start the vehicle. And if started, do not depend on it: your fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel has two jobs: it combusts, and before it combusts it protects that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Flicking the ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime the system, which moves that petrol out of your tank and into precisely those parts.

- Don't put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it only hands you a fuller tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- A car that has never moved is the quickest one to sort, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Thurrock Close? Hazards on, then leave the car there. An awkward location suits us better than a started diesel.

- Before you dial, get your position. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts BN20 9 — that is what determines whether the technician shows up or circles.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what got in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has been run. Your responses shape whatever comes after.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is dormant, and so a diesel Skoda Octavia left outside Polegate this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pulled weakened diesel through your pump was the drive in. Ring us before you head off to collect it.

## Can petrol be taken out of your diesel on a forecourt?

A big chunk of the job ends up completed at the pump, as that is where it mostly kicks off.

Still at BP? Then that is generally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the site.

A forecourt is the single spot this gets caught before your engine has fired.

Fuel pulled out of your tank and through the filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the fuel lines as well as your tank. That's still not a disaster, and we put it right where your car stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Move the vehicle out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they generally will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Shifting the car four spaces does not justify cranking the motor.

Petrol in the Dacia Duster, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you at Lidl, somewhere around Foulride Green? Then phone us, and leave your engine out of that — not even to exit the space. A technician comes to you. Tank emptied, fuel lines rinsed, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile uses little, and so these tend to be the straightforward ones.

## Foulride Green and the towns next to it

Foulride Green is a small village, and so our vans get out to it and to the places by it on the same journeys: Lower Willingdon, Wannock, Willingdon, Polegate and Filching.

Our engineers do come. The names above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most towns in East Sussex, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage.

Ring us and check rather than assuming — boundaries above all, and anywhere the satnav can struggle with.

Check the map for the ground included here.

We work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and the car does not need to come to us.

Somebody will tell you to move it out of the gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. A misfilled diesel Mercedes E-Class on the zig-zags at Willingdon Primary School is a hassle; the same motor started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system instead of a tank. Each restart primes your lines and draws more petrol past the filter then into your pump. Stay put, let everyone grumble, and ring us.

## Stuck at the kerbside anywhere in Foulride Green?

Not everybody finds a safe place to stop.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Eastbourne Road because you realised after setting off — we take that call so often that it's the normal kind.

Clear of your car while it isn't safe to sit there, with it if it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

Carrying on does the vehicle far more harm than our van driving out to an awkward spot, and that's no trouble for us.

Here's what a job in the car park by The British Queen usually looks like. We get to the vehicle, ask what got in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since — these three replies settle much of the work. Then the contaminated mix comes out of the tank, the fuel lines get rinsed, and the filter comes off where your BMW 5 Series has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and the fuel system is bled. Then our technicians start the car, confirm it runs correctly, and you set off.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

under 50 miles out of Foulride Green, your M23 is what matters now.

Lost power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the next exit that's sensible, pull up there, and never start the vehicle to move it.

Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you phone. What we bring differs.

None of it is your engine failing. That is the part worth hearing, and it is why the usual Tott Yew recreation ground call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Vauxhall Astra drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, your idle uneven and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision components it flows through; petrol dilutes it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure and not only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built escapes past tolerances, delivery shows up poorer and later and less even than designed, and all of that stops once the fuel is put right.

## A little about Foulride Green

## What follows when we reach you in Foulride Green

- Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that got in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- That tank is cleared of everything.

- Our technicians rinse the lines and clean your filter, so what is remaining in your system isn't what caused the issue.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- It's started with fresh diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running properly.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

All of this is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very rare.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Foulride Green is a distinct matter

The fault isn't the same, though the first instruction is — never start it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the protection the system depends on.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Foulride Green page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Foulride Green pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our technicians cannot put one price on this page honestly, since this job is not one job. What changes it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.

- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run.

If it is not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Things we hear about petrol in diesel around Foulride Green

## Fuel drains on a Foulride Green petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this happens.

Routinely, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something we answer straight away.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

What determines how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the fuel system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable far more regularly than motorists fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate problem. So no.

After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Leave it switched off.

Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

A parked, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than motorists expect.

Emptying wrongly fuelled motors, Foulride Green and the rest of East Sussex, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
