# How Worried Should You Be? Petrol in a Diesel Car in Freshbrook

Not started? Then less anxious than you probably feel.

Until your ignition primes the pump, the starter turns, or the vehicle is driven, petrol in a diesel tank simply sits there and does nothing. Which makes the truthful reply to that first Freshbrook query — "have I wrecked it?" — normally no.

Keep it that way: leave your motor off then phone Petrol in Diesel.

Read on for three things: the effect petrol has inside a diesel motor, the signs of how far it has spread, and the way to make sure you never do it again.

## Your engine and petrol in a diesel: what happens

Passing through an engine, diesel is doing two things at the same time.

It combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates.

Very fine gaps go into the fuel injectors and the high-pressure fuel pump, and only your diesel flowing through keeps those surfaces from grinding together.

Petrol handles the first job poorly and the second not at all.

The clattering comes from petrol being made not to ignite when compressed, which is exactly the reverse of what a diesel needs. On top of that it is runnier than diesel, it strips out the protection the system hinges on, and any pump running on that mix is wearing itself.

Together, those make the shape of the trouble clear.

It's movement that causes the harm, not contact.

All a tank with petrol in it amounts to is a fuel issue.

After your pump has been labouring on that petrol, a mechanical problem has begun: whatever is shed by a pump that's wearing travels downstream to your injectors with the fuel.

## Petrol in a diesel in Freshbrook: how serious is it? Four cases

Fuelled, and not started: no case is better.

That petrol is inside the tank and just that tank, and the job is a drain and a flush where the car sits. This is the one situation that can only truly occur at a forecourt, since anywhere else the vehicle has been driven to get there.

Your ignition turned on, or a short start.

Once primed, the fuel system has drawn petrol from that tank as far as the filter and the fuel lines.

Usually little more than clearing, purging and seeing to the fuel filter, and so still straightforward.

Your pump has spent a few miles on diluted fuel — that is what driving it does.

Distance is only half of that; how hard it was driven counts just as much. Either way this work runs to that tank, your lines, the fuel filter and clean fuel through the entire circuit.

Short trips, such as the school run to Oliver Tomkins Church of England Junior School, are one matter.

A run as far as Bath, under 50 miles away, is a very different job. So is any distance on the M4, under a mile from Freshbrook, where the motor has been running hard the whole time.

Knocking, an uneven idle, smoke, a throttle gone soft: driven till it complained.

The fuel is not acting like diesel any more, and your motor is saying so.

Pull up where you are — on the verge on Whitehill Way, at the kerb, down a side road — and do not move it again.

What comes first is still the drain and flush-through, and that deals with it, with lasting damage very unusual when a car is stopped quickly.

## Freshbrook drivers and that petrol in a diesel myths they hear

"Top it up the rest of the way with diesel and it will be fine" — a myth. It won't.

Nothing comes out when you top up — the tank just holds more of the same blend.

A diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance supposes.

If anything, the opposite is true. Myth: "A newer diesel can cope with a bit of petrol."

Finer parts and higher pressure are how a current diesel runs its fuel, and that makes the lubrication count more, not less.

Myth: "If it starts and drives, there is no harm done." This is the one that catches motorists.

Diesel in a petrol motor generally leaves a motor that won't run: the driver stops, and so does the damage.

A diesel fed petrol usually starts, idles and drives away as though nothing has happened, whilst the pump wears.

Fine and running aren't the same at all.

Myth: a two-stroke additive lets you to drive home. It was an old workaround, supposed for another issue.

It doesn't put back what petrol has thinned, and that petrol is still inside your tank later.

If the engine has run, part of the petrol is in the filter and your lines, not the tank — and your next start sends it straight back through your pump. So the myth "drain the tank yourself and you are sorted" does not stand up.

It is also truly dangerous to drain petrol into a can by the roadside.

## How does petrol in a diesel happen?

On purpose? Never. Through carelessness? Rarely, if ever.

A diesel nozzle mostly will not fit a petrol car, yet the narrower petrol nozzle goes into the filler of a diesel nearly without resistance — so forecourts make this one error straightforward, and just in that direction.

When routine and the car stop matching, it happens.

Hire cars, courtesy cars, and motors that are new to you.

Households running one of each, petrol and diesel.

Your normal forecourt, its pumps now in a different order.

Rushing for a train outside Swindon and filling up en route.

Years of petrol cars behind you, a diesel Renault Megane in front of you on the forecourt for its first tank — that is when.

With rain, a call coming in, or a car full of children to deal with, your hand simply does what it always has.

## Freshbrook people: how to prevent petrol in a diesel next time

- Not every forecourt in the UK keeps to green for unleaded and black for diesel, even if most generally do. Read the petrol pump's label; the colour is only a hint.

- Plenty of motors state the fuel inside your filler flap or on the cap, and so check it on your first fill in a vehicle you don't know.

- A coloured fob or a sticker on your diesel's key does more than any amount of intending to remember, in a household with one of each.

- Before the nozzle leaves the pump the first time you fill a hired or new motor, say "diesel" out loud. Silly, yes, but it works.

- Put the phone away. This is an easy mistake to make whilst you're thinking about something else.

- Some diesels come with a filler built to refuse a petrol nozzle, and devices you can add are available for cars without one. Such an inhibitor helps up to a point — as a backstop, not a reason to stop checking the petrol pump.

- Noticing it halfway? Stop at once. A weaker mixture follows from less petrol inside that tank, yet the next stage stays the same: do not start it.

## Freshbrook: already put petrol in a diesel?

The order of things is brief, then.

Do not fire it up, and do not turn the ignition on.

Still on the forecourt, at Asda or anywhere else? Ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

What went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run: tell us those when you ring 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue, not petrol? Then tell us. Corrosion and deposits, not lost protection, make it a separate fault — Freshbrook has a page all for it.

## What makes one Freshbrook petrol in a diesel task cost more than the next

There is no fair single price for this, since the four situations above are four different tasks.

What moves your cost is mostly which of them you're in.

Beyond that it is the share — how much petrol got in against how much that tank takes — and then where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely.

Ahead of any quote, not after, we ask three queries: your fuel that went in, the volume, and if it has run. That's why.

A range turns into a straight figure when those answers are in.
