# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Fritwell

With your tank still holding the fuel and your engine not yet run, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. All over Fritwell and the remainder of Oxfordshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

One call to us is enough: our engineers will tell you what follows after this. Try that straight away.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- While you drive, the pump and your injectors wear down. This is why you never fire it up, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Switching the ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition be.

- Do not pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance suggests, and topping up clears nothing — it only leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A car that has not moved is the easiest one to deal with, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on North Street? Hazards on, then keep the car there. An odd spot works for us better than a started diesel.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts OX27 7, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what got in, approximately how much, plus if the motor has been started. The replies determine whatever happens next.

Ring us before you collect it. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Golf this morning, and the car outside Heyford ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is inert, and any wear came on the trip in, when your pump was taking diesel that petrol had diluted.

## At the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

It begins at a pump, mostly. Regularly it finishes at one too.

If you're still on the forecourt at A E Prentice, that's normally where the drain happens — we work on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's permission.

Nowhere else but the forecourt can the mistake be halted with your motor still untouched.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the key.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Worth it.

Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

The enquiry we like goes like this: diesel Renault Megane, a few litres of unleaded, run a couple of miles, now turned off at The Co-operative Food. What we're really asking is how much fuel the pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

## Service in Fritwell

Fritwell is a rural village, and our vans are out to it and to the villages by it on those same rounds: Souldern, Fewcott, Baynards Green, Somerton and Ardley.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and the majority of locations around Oxfordshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

Call us to check instead of assuming, above all if you're on a border or somewhere your satnav struggles with.

That map is the patch the page covers.

Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is ground our engineers serve, and none of it needs your vehicle to come to us.

## Stranded on the kerb anywhere in Fritwell?

The chance to pull in anywhere sensible does not fall to everybody.

Set off, then realised? Landed by the verge beside The Lane, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Okay where you are? Sit beside it. Not safe? Step out and away from it.

Don't start it up to reach a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the blend deeper into the system.

However awkward the place, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that is far better for your car than carrying on.

Here's what a job in the car park by Kings Head usually looks like. Our technicians arrive at the vehicle, ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since — these three answers settle much of the work. Then the tainted blend comes out of your tank, the lines get cleaned, and the fuel filter comes off where your Peugeot 308 has a replaceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and the system is bled. Then our engineers fire it up, make sure it runs properly, and you pull away.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

Your M40 is the road that matters here, and runs under a mile from Fritwell.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Take the first exit that's sensible, stop there, and never restart the vehicle to move it.

On a longer trip — anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors, and mention it when you phone. It changes what our engineers bring.

None of that is the motor failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it's why the usual Nancy Bowles Wood call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Dacia Duster drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, the idle rough and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted components it runs through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built escapes past clearances, delivery shows up weaker and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once the fuel is put right.

## Fritwell itself

Fritwell is a small village in north Oxfordshire, situated in a rural area at an elevation of around 132 metres. Fritwell lies approximately 14.5 miles north of Oxford and 56.9 miles west of London, near the villages of Souldern, Fewcott, and Baynards Green. Fritwell has a population of around 711 people and is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock. Fritwell remains a quiet, residential community with a strong sense of rural identity.

## Once we get to you around Fritwell: what we do

- Our engineers check what got in, how much, and if the motor has run. The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.

- Away flows the polluted fuel.

- We clean your fuel lines and clear your filter, so what is left in your system isn't what created the trouble.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- The motor is started and checked to be sure it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away.

There is no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is spotted quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Fritwell is a separate job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your motor remains off — whereas this fault underneath it is a separate one altogether.

Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Fritwell page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Fritwell

We can't put one price on this page frankly, as the job is not one job. What shifts it:

- This is the key one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much your tank can hold.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the car is, and if a van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range.

Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went soft, the idle turned uneven, and your diesel Audi A6 is now sitting near Souldern Wesleyan Chapel. That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully instead of the motor failing — and because there's no dashboard light for it, cars in that position usually get driven a second time before somebody phones. Don't. Turn it off and call us.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Fritwell drivers

## I'm on a forecourt around Fritwell. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes, and it's where a fair portion of this work gets done.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians work at Esso and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your engine has run counts a lot more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres.

Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop somewhere safe, turn off, and leave the vehicle off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable much more commonly than motorists expect.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

The pump still has to put up with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Waiting next to it?

Keep the engine shut off.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off.

This is recoverable from far more often than motorists fear, and a still, cold car is the best place to be in.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Fritwell and across Oxfordshire.
