# Fulledge: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet turned over, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave the motor off. That outcome is settled in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. All over Fulledge and the rest of Lancashire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Just one ring to us is plenty: our engineers shall explain what happens after this. Do it first.

## Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Never fire it up. Started anyway? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor typically cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for several miles. Motorists get that reversed. It's not fine — the fuel system is wearing every mile you do.

- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off as well — turn it on and you frequently prime the system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for exactly those parts.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A car that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Mizpah Street? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. A difficult place works for us better than a started motor.

- Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning BB10 4, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.

- Three replies determine the entire call-out: the fuel you tipped in, the ballpark quantity of it, and if it has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

## Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on a forecourt?

Pumps are where this work usually begins, and where a good part of that closes.

Still at Tesco? Then that's normally where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the owner.

At the forecourt, the mistake is caught with the motor never started, and no place else manages it.

Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is started and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and the lines as well as the tank. That's still not a disaster, and we put it right where the vehicle sits. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was read.

The staff will usually offer to roll the vehicle out from the pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing.

Rolling the car four bays doesn't warrant cranking it.

## Fulledge and the places beside it

These same rounds get us to Brunshaw, Burnley Wood, Burnley, Pike Hill and Heasandford besides Fulledge, which is a residential suburb.

Our technicians still come. The places above are only the closest neighbours, and a page is there for most locations across Lancashire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage.

Ring us and ask instead of presuming — boundaries above all, and wherever a satnav might struggle with.

The area this page includes sits on the map.

Your vehicle doesn't need to move to us. We work across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Someone will tell you to shift the car out of that gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. A misfuelled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags at St Mary's RC Primary School, a Voluntary Academy is an inconvenience; the same vehicle fired up three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. Each restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol past your filter then into your pump. Stay put, let them moan, then give us a call.

## Stuck at the kerb somewhere in Fulledge?

Some people get no sensible spot to stop at all.

A common call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge on Celia Street or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Okay right there? Remain by it. Not okay? Move out and away from it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mixture further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better.

A technician heading to a difficult spot is no trouble for us, and it is far better for the car than pressing on.

Here's what a job in the car park outside Park View normally looks like. Our technicians reach your car, ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since — these three replies determine much of the work. Then the contaminated blend comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get cleaned, and the filter comes off where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable one. Clean diesel goes in and the system is bled. Then our engineers fire it up, make sure it runs correctly, and you set off.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

This is where the local M65 matters, under 3 miles from Fulledge.

Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It affects what our technicians bring.

Out there fine, back gutless. If that was the trip to Fulledge Recreation Ground, look at that tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the tight tolerances meant to build injection pressure — so every further mile the diesel Ford Focus covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, phone us.

## A little about Fulledge

Fulledge is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated on the riverside with a mix of terraced housing. Fulledge has a population of around 8227 people and is located near other suburban areas such as Brunshaw and Burnley Wood. Fulledge sits at an elevation of 121 metres, close to the town of Burnley and approximately 19 miles from Preston. Fulledge is part of the larger urban landscape of the North West region, about 180 miles from London.

## What happens when our technicians arrive with you in Fulledge

- We find out what was put in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.

- The polluted fuel is drawn out of the tank.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.

- When it's turned on, our technicians check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away.

Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been caught quickly, and as all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a workshop.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, left close to Turf Moor. For a diesel Audi A3 whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Ring us, then let the vehicle stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why your lines get flushed and not just that tank emptied.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Fulledge?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the motor stays off — while the issue underneath it's a separate one altogether.

Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the protection the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal in Fulledge has its own page with the full story — including why it is frequently the more significant of the two.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you call us — some agreements want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it afterwards. Then ring us about the Vauxhall Astra by Kingdom Hall of Jehova's Witnesses, and don't worry that you can't say how full your tank was. Almost nobody can, in a vehicle they picked up two days ago, and we work it out on site. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a share: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mixture, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Fulledge

We can't put one number on this page truthfully, because this job is not one job. What changes it:

- This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a technician.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

## Petrol in diesel: common queries around Fulledge

## Fuel drains on a Fulledge petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this happens.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Asda is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there is possible.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more frequently than drivers expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores.

Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Still with your car?

Never turn the car back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car after that.

This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists fear, and a parked, cold car is the best place to be in.

Emptying misfilled motors, Fulledge and the rest of Lancashire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
