# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Gable Head? Don't Start It

With your tank still carrying the petrol and your engine not yet started, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. All over Gable Head and the remainder of Hampshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

Contact us and our engineers can explain what comes next before you do anything else.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Whenever you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear down. That is why you don't crank it, and why you do not trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the point drivers get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Leave the car's ignition alone also. Diesel has two tasks: it combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates your injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime your system, which moves the petrol out of that tank and into precisely those components.

- Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests — so do not put diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to handle, and we'd sooner get to an odd location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Legion Road, turn those hazards on then leave the vehicle there.

- Find out where you are before calling. A postcode starting PO11 9, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of showing up.

- What was put in, roughly how many litres, and also if the engine has started — the three answers determine the entire call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Nothing about the hours since has cost you anything. Fuel in a tank is dormant, and so a diesel Volkswagen Golf parked at Warblington this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what sucked diluted diesel through your pump was the trip in. Phone us before you go to collect the car.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Most of this job begins at a forecourt, which means a good part of that ends up finished on site.

The drain typically takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at JET? Given the station's consent, that's a spot we work, and often.

A forecourt is the single place this gets spotted before the engine has started.

We can still put it right where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and driven there, and that sucked fuel through your filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past that tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for your key are what decide that.

Move the vehicle out of the way if the staff offer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets through the pump, and that is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the mileage: a mile at light throttle draws little diesel. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane somewhere around Gable Head, a boot full of shopping, and you stranded outside Co-op Food — phone. Getting out of that space is never worth a restart. That tank gets emptied where it waits, the lines purged, fresh diesel in, and you get home.

## Gable Head plus the towns near it

These same rounds take us to South Hayling, Mengham, Newtown, West Town and Sea View besides Gable Head, which is a residential suburb.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of locations across Hampshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

Contact us to enquire rather than guessing, particularly when you are on the border or anywhere a satnav struggles with.

The patch the page spans appears on this map.

Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.

## Kerbside call-outs in Gable Head

The opportunity to pull in anywhere suitable doesn't come to everybody.

Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Elm Grove since you noticed after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Remain beside the car if it is safe to sit inside, yet clear of the car if it is not.

Do not start up your engine to nurse it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the fuel system.

We'll take our van to an awkward spot without any trouble, and for the car that's a lot better than driving on.

Chance the trip home from The Newtown House Hotel? Don't. It will start and it will drive off quite happily, which is the issue — a diesel on a diluted tank runs normally whilst wearing down the components the fuel should be protecting. Park the Audi A4 and call us.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

under 5 miles from Gable Head, your Waterlooville Bypass is what matters here.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power ebbs away, the idle gets rough, and there may be some smoke.

Do not restart it to reposition. Come off at the first safe junction then turn off.

It alters what our engineers bring, so mention it when you phone: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

## Gable Head itself

Gable Head is a coastal suburban area in Hampshire, situated near the city of Portsmouth and close to the neighbouring communities of South Hayling, Mengham, and Newtown. Gable Head lies at a low elevation of around 8 metres, reflecting its seaside location. Gable Head is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, which is typical of many suburban areas in the South East of England.

## What we do when we get to you around Gable Head

- Three things get established before any price — your fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- Your tank gets emptied completely.

- Our engineers clean the lines and clear the filter, and so what's left in the system isn't what started the trouble.

- Our engineers put fresh diesel in and bleed the system.

- When it's started, we make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to drive away.

There's no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it is spotted soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Our technicians rinse your lines rather than only draining that tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already got to the fuel filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance really assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Dacia Duster parked up near Hayling Island War Memorial a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Ring us and leave it off.

## A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Gable Head

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is unchanged — do not crank it — yet this issue is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection the fuel system relies on.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Gable Head page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Gable Head prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Frankly, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here is what changes it:

- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.

- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly, not the motor giving up — and with no warning light for it, motors in that position generally get driven once more before somebody rings. Don't. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned uneven, and a diesel BMW 5 Series now waiting near St. Mary's Church. Turn the car off then call us.

## Questions we get about petrol in diesel in Gable Head

## I'm on a forecourt around Gable Head. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Often, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer there and then.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more commonly than motorists assume.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not a change, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

That tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Don't switch your engine back on.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the car remain that way.

A stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people fear.

Across Hampshire and around Gable Head: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
