# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Garforth?

With your tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. Throughout Garforth and the remainder of West Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

We can tell you what your next step will be. Ring us — that goes ahead of anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Whenever you drive, the pump and your injectors suffer. That is why you never fire it up, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it greases — the high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be also: switching it on is usually all it takes to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- A car that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort, so stay where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Church Lane? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. A tricky spot suits us better than a started diesel.

- Get your position ready before you dial. A postcode starting LS25 1 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between our van showing up and our van circling.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, roughly how much, plus if your car has fired. These three answers determine the whole call-out.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where the job mostly begins, and where a large share of it finishes.

Still at Tesco? Then that's generally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the station.

Before the engine has fired — the forecourt is the only spot this ends up stopped.

Our engineers can still sort it out where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key are what settle that.

The staff will generally help you push the car clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. It is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

The awkward part is that bay, not the fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height limit on the way in that settles whether our van can reach you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at Co-op Food, say how much room there's round you and which way round the vehicle is. Those our engineers cover regularly. Should there be no space to work next to your diesel Skoda Octavia, it gets moved with the engine off, and not out of pedantry over a couple of seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of the blend exits that tank for the pump, and two shunts into a roomier bay have gradually made a worse job of what was merely a car sitting still.

## Garforth plus the areas beside it

Lidgett, Moor Garforth, Church Garforth, West Garforth, East Garforth — each of them on our journeys that bring us across to Garforth itself, a town.

There are separate pages for the majority of towns around West Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list means nothing at all about whether our engineers come.

Presuming is the thing to resist, above all on a border or anywhere a satnav fails. Contact us and ask.

The area this page includes sits on the map.

Your vehicle does not need to move to us. We work throughout all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stranded on the kerb somewhere in Garforth?

Not everyone gets the opportunity to stop somewhere safe.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Main Street because you realised after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the usual kind.

Whether you remain beside the car or keep clear of it rests on whether staying nearby feels wise.

Don't start up your engine to limp the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into the system.

However tricky the spot, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that is far better for the car than carrying on.

Three replies decide most of the work: what got in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for them when we arrive at the car in the car park at The Briggate. Next the contaminated mixture comes out of that tank, the fuel lines are cleaned, and where your Nissan Qashqai has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After fresh diesel is in and the system primed, we start it and check it runs properly before you drive away.

## Petrol in a diesel, but your car has gone

under a mile out of Garforth, the M1 is what counts here.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle goes rough, and there may be smoke.

Take the next junction that is safe, pull up there, and do not restart the vehicle to reposition.

It affects what we bring, so mention it when you phone: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

None of it is the engine failing. That is the part worth hearing, and it's why the usual Garforth Cricket Club call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Audi A4 drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, your idle uneven and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting components it runs through; petrol dilutes it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built leaks past tolerances, delivery shows up poorer and later and less even than designed, and all of that stops once your fuel is corrected.

## A bit about Garforth

Garforth is a town in West Yorkshire, situated approximately 6.6 miles east of Leeds, and is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock. Garforth sits inland, with an elevation of around 69 metres, and is located near several smaller communities, including Lidgett, Moor Garforth, and Church Garforth. Garforth has a population of around 14,798 people and is within commuting distance of Leeds, while also being about 166.5 miles north of London.

## What our engineers do when we arrive with you around Garforth

- We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies shape what the work actually is.

- Away goes the polluted fuel.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.

- The system gets primed, on clean diesel.

- The motor is started and checked to make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

That has your car ready to set off.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been noticed quickly, and as all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Ringing from near Garforth Library & One Stop Centre? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it is on. Room for our van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself hardly matters: on-street is where we work most, and we would far rather have a cramped bay than a car someone has driven somewhere simpler. Then it's a drain for the Ford Focus, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines cleaned, fresh fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of it is in your lines and not your tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Garforth?

The issue is not the same, though the first step is — don't fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication the system depends on.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Garforth page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Garforth?

One price wouldn't be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.

That deadness is your fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not your engine giving up — and with no warning for it, vehicles in that position usually get driven a second time before anyone rings. Please don't. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Citroen C3 now sitting near Church Gardens Community Centre. Switch the car off then ring us.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Garforth

## I'm on a forecourt around Garforth. Can you drain the car here?

Much of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's consent we visit Esso and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more commonly than motorists fear.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a modification and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it does not put back what petrol has weakened.

Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

## You, and your car, still together?

Your engine stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off.

This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists assume, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
