# Gateside: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, never switch your motor on, even briefly, to move the car. Stop; leave it off.

Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a simple drain-and-flush job wherever the vehicle has stopped — and nothing settles that as much as these next few minutes do.

Anywhere you are in Gateside, this is the order things run from now.

## Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

First, the following — in this order.

- The keys out of your ignition. Turning your ignition on can be enough to prime your fuel system, while priming draws petrol out of the tank towards the parts it harms. Keep the vehicle off altogether.

- Topping up with diesel sounds like it dilutes the problem. It does not: nothing comes out, and your tank simply holds more of the same.

- Make the vehicle easy to see first — hazard lights on — if there is moving traffic anywhere near you.

- The attendants will normally help you push it away from the pump. Ask, and move it by hand — not on your engine, even for a few yards.

- Which fuel, and about how much? The receipt replies both, and that's where our first question starts. Never bin it.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next exit if you're on the M8, under 10 miles from Gateside, and stop somewhere sensible — not at the services further on. Stage one starts after that.

## Every Gateside fuel drain starts here: has the engine run?

Everything after this stage rests on one answer.

If the motor has not run at all:

- Just that tank has petrol in it for now.

- Where the car stands is normally where this work happens: a drain, then a flush.

- No place is better, and it's why the first stage matters so much.

If it has been started, even for a second:

- Out of your tank, past the filter, into the lines: that is how far that petrol has travelled.

- A longer run carries it right through to your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

- The job expands with the mileage — lines rinsed, filter sorted, occasionally more.

That line falls there because diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and the injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not.

In that tank, sitting still, petrol does no harm.

Petrol being pumped is wearing the components that shift the car.

## Calling about petrol in a diesel from Gateside: what to have prepared

Prepare a little, and the technician finds you instead of circling.

- The ideal start is a postcode — one starting PA16 7 — for where you have stopped.

- Wherever you have parked, the road's name helps — whether that's Rankin Street or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside Co-op Food, for example — and it's much easier to find.

- Make and model of the car, and the fact it's a diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has its own Gateside page.

- About how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.

- The mileage it did, and how heavily, if it has run at all.

- Whose motor it is. Some hire or company contracts want the owner to authorise the work, and that is easier settled before our technicians arrive than after.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then. Email works as well if it can wait, with the car left at home, going nowhere.

## Waiting for a fuel drain around Gateside: what to do

During the wait, the damage comes from well-meant help — which is why these matter.

- Where the car has stopped settles where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety ahead of your car.

- Not to roll it a couple of yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's favour: nobody starts it.

- Anything from the boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts that petrol.

- Emptying it yourself is out: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond that tank stays put anyway.

- Keep your ignition off — the windows and the radio included.

## The fuel drain, step by step, once our van gets there

- Three questions. What was put in, how much, and whether it's run. The replies set the job, which is why our quote comes after them but not before.

- Clearing it is how the blend gets taken out of your tank.

- Petrol that has shifted beyond that tank travels in the lines if it ran, and your lines are purged to clear it.

- Cleaned, or changed if the car has a workable one: the fuel filter is sorted next.

- Bleeding your system follows after clean diesel is in.

- We fire it up only after new diesel has gone in and bled the system, then confirm that it's running properly.

We wait until it's running on new diesel.

When it has been noticed soon, permanent damage is very rare, and the car returns to normal use straight away.

## After your fuel drain: back on the road in Gateside

- Nothing special is needed after a start with fresh diesel — normal driving will do.

- The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your signal to stop then ring us once more.

- Keep the paperwork. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.

- The handle's colour isn't the thing to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
