# Gatley: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't start your engine. While the fuel is still in your tank and the motor has not yet run, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that's decided in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they sit, across Gatley and the remainder of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

Phone and we can tell you what comes after that before you try anything else.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Don't start the car — and never trust it when it runs. Here is the part most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel normally just cannot run, and so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, ticks over and pulls away without complaint for several miles. It's not okay. It is grinding that fuel system as you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition stays off too — switch it on and you often prime the system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for precisely those parts.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that hasn't moved is the simplest one to deal with, and our team would much rather get to a difficult location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Gatley Road, turn those hazards on then leave the vehicle there.

- Keep your whereabouts prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning SK8 4 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between our van turning up and a van circling.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what was put in, approximately how many litres, and also if the motor has fired. These three details shape the full job.

## Removing petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

Forecourts are where the job mostly begins, and where a good share of that ends.

We work on station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement, and so if you're still at the nearest petrol station that's normally where this drain gets done.

No place other than the forecourt can it be halted with your motor still unstarted.

Our technicians can still put it right where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and driven there, and that pulled fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

Attendants will usually chip in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Take the assistance.

Moving the car four lengths doesn't warrant firing it.

Each start primes that fuel system and draws more of the mixture out of that tank and on to your pump — which is why a car shunted twice into a nicer spot has silently become a worse job than one left exactly where it stopped. So when our engineers can't work beside the diesel BMW 3 Series, our engineers roll the car without starting it. None of that is pedantry about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside The Co-operative Food we attend often, and the fuel is rarely the difficult part: that bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height limit at the way in settling if a van gets to you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way the car points.

## Gatley plus the places beside it

These same journeys bring us to Peel Hall, Sharston, East Didsbury, Benchill and Northenden as well as Gatley, which is a riverside town.

There are separate pages for the majority of places in Greater Manchester, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing at all about whether our technicians come.

Close to the boundary, or anywhere your satnav gets wrong? Phone to enquire instead of assuming.

The patch the page covers appears on this map.

Every bit of it is territory our engineers work: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not bring your car anywhere.

Shift the vehicle out of that gateway and deal with it later — that is what a passer-by will say, and it's wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags by Gatley Primary School, a misfuelled diesel Audi A4 is an inconvenience and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for good manners, it is no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, as priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes through the fuel filter towards the pump. Let everyone grumble. Phone us.

## Kerbside stops in Gatley

Not everybody has a sensible spot to pull in.

A routine call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge of Northenden Road or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Wait by the vehicle while it's wise to sit in it, yet out of the vehicle if it isn't.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere handier and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile covered.

We will send the van to a difficult spot without any bother, and for the car that is a lot better than pressing on.

A diesel Ford Focus sitting in the car park outside Horse & Farrier holding a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up until somebody drives it home. Leave it there overnight then call us in the morning. Nothing worsens while it waits. What our technicians will ask about is if that drive there was brief and cold, because that's where petrol is slowest to burn properly — and whatever doesn't burn can slip past the rings then into the engine oil.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

Here is where the M56 comes in — under a mile away from Gatley.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are usually a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Come off at the first safe exit, turn off, and do not restart it to move it.

Long trip? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in our van.

## All about Gatley

Gatley is a town in Greater Manchester, situated on the River Mersey at an elevation of 42 metres, approximately 6 miles south of Manchester. Gatley has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant, and its riverside setting provides scenic views. Gatley is close to several nearby places, including Peel Hall, Sharston, and East Didsbury, and is about 157 miles northwest of London.

## What comes next when we get to you in Gatley

- We check what got in, how much, and if your motor has run. The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- The tainted fuel is drawn out of the tank.

- Our technicians purge the fuel lines and clear the filter, and so what's remaining in the system is not what caused the trouble.

- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.

- Our engineers turn it on and check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to drive away.

Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been noticed early, and because all of this is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left close to Gatley Clock Tower. For a diesel Volkswagen Touran whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Phone us, then let the vehicle stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the lines get purged and not just your tank drained.

## Gatley AdBlue removal is a separate problem

The issue is not the same, though the first instruction is — never fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Gatley page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Gatley costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our engineers can't put one number on this page honestly, as this job isn't one job. What moves it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for our van.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and whether it has run.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Purged, not drained — that is what a diesel Peugeot 2008 which got as far as St.James' Gatley needs. Running a diesel puts that blend into the filter, the fuel lines, the pump and the rail, none of which empties with that tank, and so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the trouble.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Gatley drivers

## Fuel drains on a Gatley petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this takes place.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there. With the site's permission our engineers attend BP and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It's fixable a lot more regularly than motorists assume, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate issue. So no.

Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, because our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Never turn your engine on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then let the vehicle remain that way.

This is recoverable from much more frequently than people fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Throughout Greater Manchester and in Gatley: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
