# Gelli-haf: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Gelli-haf and the remainder of Caerphilly. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When the motor has not been started and the petrol is still inside your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much was put in.

Our team can show you what the next move is. Contact us — this happens before anything else.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine enough for a couple of miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And having started, do not rely on it: your fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the ignition is left off also — switch it on and you usually prime that system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for exactly those parts.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to handle, so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Tamar Close? Hazards on, then keep the car there. A difficult location works for us better than a started diesel.

- A van showing up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts NP12 2, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Get both prepared before you call.

- What got in, approximately how many litres, and whether the engine has started — these three answers decide the full visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

## Removing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

A fair share of the work ends up completed at a forecourt, because that's where it often begins.

The drain normally happens right there. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the station's consent, that is a spot we work, and routinely.

At a garage, the mistake is spotted with the engine never fired, and no place else manages that.

The few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys settle how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where the car is.

The attendants will generally happily move the car away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That's worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

Diesel Renault Clio. Some litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Turned off now, at Aldi. That's the call we like, because the question under it is about volume through the pump instead of hours on the clock.

## Areas our team serve around Gelli-haf

Gelli-haf is a small village, and our technicians go out to it and to anywhere near it on the usual rounds: Bryn, Penllwyn, Maesycwmmer, Gelligroes and Fleur-de-lis.

Our technicians still come. The names above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all places around Caerphilly, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Ring us and ask instead of presuming, above all when you are on a border or somewhere your phone gets wrong.

Use the map for the area shown here.

Every bit of it is territory our engineers serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never move your vehicle anywhere.

Hazards on. Engine off. Phone us. It is twenty to nine by the local primary school, you're late, and your receipt says unleaded — and even though three miles in your Skoda Octavia feels like nothing, fuel is metered on demand, and a frantic drive needs plenty of that.

## Gelli-haf: stranded where you stopped

Not everybody has a sensible spot to stop.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Solent Close because you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Wait by the vehicle if it's safe to wait in it, and clear of it when it is not.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Driving on causes your car far more harm than a technician coming out to a tricky place, and that's no bother for us.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Your M4 is the road which counts here, and runs under 10 miles from Gelli-haf.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.

Pull off at the first safe exit, turn off, and never start the vehicle to move it.

Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

## Where's Gelli-haf?

Gelli-haf is a locality in Caerphilly, situated inland at an elevation of 182 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Gelli-haf lies approximately 10 miles north of Newport and is surrounded by nearby places such as Bryn, Penllwyn, and Maesycwmmer. Gelli-haf has a population of around 1708 people, making it a small but distinct community in the area. Gelli-haf is also relatively distant from London, being around 132 miles away.

## The call-out in Gelli-haf, step by step

- Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that was put in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- Away flows the tainted fuel.

- Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.

- The system gets primed, on clean diesel.

- The motor is fired up and tested to be sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to set off.

Our engineers do everything wherever the car has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been spotted early, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

Seldom the problem, the spot. On-street is the commonest place our engineers work, and a tight parking spot is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you ring from near Islwyn Indoor Bowls club, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your Audi A4 gets drained, the filter changed where a serviceable one exists, your lines cleaned and clean fuel put through the full circuit — as by now the worst of it is in your lines, not that tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Gelli-haf?

The fault is not the same, though the opening rule is — do not start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel.

Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal in Gelli-haf has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

Hire car or company car? Call them before you call us — some contracts want the hire firm to approve the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later. Then phone us about the Ford Focus near Wheel Of Drams, and do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Almost no one can, in a motor they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out on the spot. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a share: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the mixture, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Gelli-haf

One price wouldn't be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much the tank can hold.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Drain it then put new diesel in — that is the suggestion you will get, typically from a person certain, and it is half true. Do exactly that to a diesel Mercedes C-Class by Tabor Chapel and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound sensible. What happens next is the trouble: the motor immediately sucks the petrol still sitting in the fuel filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, since emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. We flush the circuit and take the fuel filter off where the car has a workable one, which is the difference between your car being fixed and the car just starting.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Gelli-haf

## Fuel drains on a Gelli-haf petrol station forecourt

A good share of this work happens there, so yes.

Our engineers attend Esso and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more frequently than drivers fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different problem. So no.

Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to take it to a main dealer, because our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Still with your car?

Never turn the car on again.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it remain that way.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
