# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Gemini? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Gemini and the rest of Cheshire. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. While your engine has not run and the petrol is still inside the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much went in.

Phone before everything else begins, and you'll know what comes after that.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Never fire it up — and do not depend on it when it fires up. That is the part most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine fed diesel generally just can't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives off just fine for a few miles. It's not all right. It's wearing out the fuel system while you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the car's ignition is left off too — turn it on and you often prime the system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for exactly those parts.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests — so never add diesel on top to thin it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We'd rather travel to an awkward spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a motor that has not shifted. On the verge on Taurus Park, that means hazards on and leave the car.

- Before you dial, work out your position. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning WA5 7 — that is what determines whether our van turns up or circles.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, roughly how much, and also if the engine has run. These three facts settle the entire call-out.

How far you went is what our engineers ask about, not how long the car has been standing — and here's why. Diesel does two tasks on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before burning it lubricates its injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a hurried top-up on the drive in, it dawning on you around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Passat parked outside Warrington West since quarter past eight shows those few miles were travelled with the pump labouring on a fluid robbed of most of its protection. Call us then leave the vehicle precisely where it sits.

## Clearing petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

Much of the job starts at a pump, which means a big part of it gets done at one.

Still at BP? Then that's normally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the owner.

At a forecourt, this gets spotted with your engine never started, and nowhere else does it.

The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the key decide how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where your car is.

Attendants will usually chip in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next driver get past. Accept the assistance.

Starting the car to shift four car lengths is not.

## Gemini plus the villages next to it

These same rounds get us to Callands, Kingswood, Winwick Quay, Westbrook and Dallam as well as Gemini, which is a residential suburb.

Our engineers do come. The places above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns across Cheshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Near the boundary, or anywhere your phone can't find? Phone and ask rather than assuming.

See the map for the area covered on this page.

The vehicle doesn't need to come to us. We operate across the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Move the vehicle out of the gateway and sort it out later — that is what a passer-by will say, and it's wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags by Callands Primary Academy, a wrongly fuelled diesel Skoda Octavia is a nuisance and nothing worse. Started three more times for courtesy, it's no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, as priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes past your filter towards your pump. Let people grumble. Ring us.

## Stranded on the kerb anywhere in Gemini?

Not everybody gets a chance to pull over somewhere sensible.

A normal call for us and not an unusual one: realised after setting off, landed on the verge beside Europa Boulevard or at a lay-by with the hazards on.

Whether you remain with your car or move clear of it turns on if staying there seems safe.

Do not fire up your engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into the system.

However difficult the spot, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for your car than carrying on.

Three answers decide most of the work: what went in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for them when we get to the car in the car park at Seven Woods. After that the contaminated mix comes out of that tank, the lines are flushed, and where your Peugeot 308 has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After clean diesel is in and the fuel system primed, our technicians start it and make sure it runs properly before you drive away.

## Run it already? Stop, then see this

This is where your M62 counts, under a mile from Gemini.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next exit that is safe, stop there, and never restart the car to reposition.

Long trip? Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in our van.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision components it runs through, and petrol thins it. That is the full mechanism, and it explains the usual Big Moss Wood call: a diesel Audi A4 that travelled out there without fuss and came back down on power, rough at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when your fuel dilutes, pressure that should build then stay built starts escaping past tolerances instead, and the motor gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed around. None of that is the motor failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.

## All about Gemini

Gemini is a suburban area in Cheshire, situated on the riverside with an elevation of around 11 metres. Gemini lies near several neighbouring communities, including Callands, Kingswood, and Winwick Quay, and is approximately 14 miles from the city of Salford. Gemini has a population of around 1348 people, predominantly living in detached housing. Gemini is located in the North West region of England, about 168 miles from London.

## What happens when our engineers get to you in Gemini

- We find out what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.

- That tank gets emptied of everything.

- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what caused the issue, so the lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.

- Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.

- Our engineers fire it up and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From there, you're ready to set off.

All of it is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Gemini is a distinct job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas this issue beneath it's a distinct one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and residue instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Gemini page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the vehicle — some agreements demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about the diesel BMW 1 Series close to Marks & Spencer. You will not know how full your tank was. Hardly anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on site all the same. Our technicians ask as the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Gemini

Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what moves it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

## Gemini motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Gemini petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this takes place.

Regularly, provided the site agrees: Welcome Break Burtonwood, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something our engineers answer straight away.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through the system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, and keep the vehicle off.

Driving moves the problem along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct fault. So no.

The pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Your engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the car stay that way.

Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best place available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Clearing misfilled cars, Gemini and the rest of Cheshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
