# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Gerrans? Don't Start It

If you have not started the motor as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor needs while the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not yet turned over, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has ended up in Gerrans or the rest of Cornwall, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there.

Our team can tell you what the next stage is. Phone — that happens before all else.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- As you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors suffer. That is why you do not fire it up, and why you never trust it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point most people get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition remains off as well — switch it on and you commonly prime your system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for just those parts.

- Never thin it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to sort, so wait where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Gerrans Square? Hazards on, and leave the car there. A tricky location works for us better than a started diesel.

- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning TR2 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.

- What went in, roughly how much, plus if your car has started — these three answers shape your whole call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Petrol in a diesel BMW 3 Series, sat at Falmouth Docks since first thing? The afternoon has lost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is dormant. It was the journey in that sucked thinned diesel through the pump. Phone before you drive the car.

## Clearing petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

Much of this job begins at a forecourt, meaning a big part of that is finished there.

Still at Esso? Then that is generally where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the station.

At the forecourt, this gets halted with your engine never started, and nowhere else manages it.

The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key determine how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where the vehicle stands.

Push it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next customer gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

## Coverage in Gerrans

Being a coastal village, Gerrans sees a frequent call, whilst its neighbours nearby go along on that same run: Portscatho and Rosevine, Trethewell and Percuil, St Just in Roseland.

Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and most towns in Cornwall have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Assuming is the habit to skip, especially on the boundary or somewhere a satnav struggles. Ring us to check.

The patch the page includes is on this map.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of it is territory our technicians work on, and none of it needs your car to move to us.

## Stuck at the roadside around Gerrans

Not everyone has a sensible place to pull in.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Treloan Lane as you worked it out after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the normal kind.

Out of the vehicle when it's not safe to be inside, with it when it is.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: fire it up to get to somewhere handier and the blend goes further into the system with every mile driven.

A van driving to an inconvenient spot is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for your car than carrying on.

Your Peugeot 3008 stays where it is in the car park outside The Standard Inn for the whole job, which typically runs like this. First our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since, given that most of the work depends on those answers. That tank is emptied of the polluted mixture, the fuel lines are cleaned, and the filter comes off if it is a serviceable one. With fresh diesel in and the system primed, the vehicle is fired up and tested, and once it's running properly you pull away.

## Petrol in a diesel, and your car has travelled

over 50 miles out of Gerrans, your M5 is what counts here.

It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the next junction that is sensible, stop there, and never start it to move it.

Presume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Say so when you call. What our engineers bring changes.

## Where is Gerrans?

Gerrans is a coastal village in Cornwall, situated near the Roseland Peninsula and overlooking the sea. Gerrans has a population of around 834 people and is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock. Gerrans is close to the nearby villages of Portscatho and Rosevine, and is about 6.6 miles from the city of Truro. Gerrans sits at an elevation of 57 metres above sea level, in a scenic area of the South West region.

## When we arrive with you in Gerrans: what happens

- Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- Away goes the contaminated mixture.

- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what caused the trouble, so the lines get purged and the filter cleared.

- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.

- It's run with fresh diesel in it, and we make sure that it's running correctly.

After that it's ready to set off.

Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been spotted soon, and since all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

Why we are firm about not driving on: the pump sits before the fuel injectors, so whatever a worn pump loses travels on with your fuel. Leave the Kia Sportage near St Gerrans then call us.

## Gerrans AdBlue removal is a different problem

Never fire it up: that first step holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself.

Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips the lubrication the system relies on.

Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Gerrans page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That's a misfuelled diesel Volkswagen Polo telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, by Monument to General Slim or anywhere else, and do not restart it to find a better place.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Gerrans

What moves the price is listed below, because the job isn't one job and our engineers cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for our van.

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went limp, the idle turned lumpy, and your diesel Volvo XC60 is now waiting near The Roseland Centre. That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully rather than the engine failing — and since there's no warning for it, cars in that position generally get driven again before anyone rings. Don't. Switch it off and phone us.

## Gerrans drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station in Gerrans, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big part of this work gets done there, so yes.

Regularly, provided the site consents: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something we answer there and then.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what takes the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more often than drivers fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct fault. So no.

Your tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Is the vehicle still with you?

Do not turn it back on.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from much more commonly than people expect, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Emptying misfuelled motors, Gerrans and the rest of Cornwall, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
