# Gilford: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Gilford and the remainder of County Down. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While the motor has not yet run and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in.

Ring us before anything else happens, so you will learn what comes after that.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Don't fire it up. Fired up anyway? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically will not run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for several miles. Most people get that muddled. It isn't fine — that fuel system is grinding every mile you do.

- Switching your ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition off.

- Don't thin it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Sit tight if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Dunskey Street, anywhere — a tricky location for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a car that never shifted.

- A van turning up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning BT63 6, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Keep both ready before you ring.

- Three answers settle the full call-out: the liquid you poured in, the approximate amount of it, plus if it has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

## Removing petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

A fair chunk of the job gets completed at a forecourt, since that's where it mostly begins.

If you're still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that is typically where the drain happens — we operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement.

Before the engine has fired — a forecourt is the single spot this gets stopped.

Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean your lines and your filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for your key.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the staff help you move the car. Worth it.

Four car lengths is not worth a start.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Nissan Qashqai, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside the local shops now. Time passed is not the thing our engineers need. Fuel drawn by the pump is.

## Gilford plus the places near it

Tullylish, Lawrencetown, Tandragee, Scarva, Drumnacanvy — all of these on the rounds that carry us over to Gilford too, a small village.

We do come. Those places above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places in County Down, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Close to the border, or somewhere the satnav gets wrong? Call us to enquire rather than assuming.

That map is the area the page includes.

Your car never needs to come to us. We work over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Nothing warns you, since from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Audi A6 will have felt perfectly ordinary on the way back from the local primary school, and they all do — which is the snag with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol car usually refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the damage with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, ticks over, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump works without the lubrication its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us about how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

## Broken down by the roadside around Gilford

A chance to stop somewhere sensible doesn't fall to everybody.

If you realised after setting off and finished up on the verge on South Crescent, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that is a normal call for us rather than a rare one.

Whether you remain with the motor or keep clear of it depends on whether being in it seems safe.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

A van coming to a difficult location is no trouble for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than driving on.

Three answers settle most of the work: what got in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we get to your car in the car park at the pub in the village. Then the polluted mixture comes out of your tank, the lines are flushed, and where your BMW X1 has a serviceable filter, it comes off. When new diesel is in and your system bled, we fire it up and check it runs correctly before you set off.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the car has moved

Here is where your M77 counts, over 50 miles away from Gilford.

Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Don't start it to reposition. Get off at the next safe exit and switch off.

It changes what we bring, and so tell us when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

Out there happy, back sluggish. If that was the trip to the green space at the edge of the village, look at your tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the fine clearances supposed to build injection pressure — so every further mile the diesel Citroen C3 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, call us.

## A bit about Gilford

Gilford is a locality in County Down, situated inland at an elevation of 32 metres, approximately 12 miles from Armagh. Gilford is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is located near the communities of Tullylish, Lawrencetown, and Tandragee. Gilford has a population of around 1461 residents and is part of the wider region of Northern Ireland, about 326 miles from London.

## When our engineers get to you around Gilford: what follows

- Three things get established before any price — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- The tank is cleared of everything.

- Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.

- Our technicians put clean diesel in and prime the system.

- Our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away.

There is no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

Rarely the problem, the location. On-street is the usual place our technicians work, and a tight parking spot is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you ring from close to the centre, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can park alongside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the Vauxhall Insignia gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a workable one exists, the lines rinsed and fresh fuel put through the whole system — because by now the worst of it is in your lines, not the tank.

## Gilford AdBlue removal is a different job

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is the same — don't start the vehicle — but this problem is not.

Petrol thins your diesel and removes the protection the system depends on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and residue instead.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal in Gilford has its own page with the full story — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

## Gilford prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One number would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

## Gilford drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I'm on a forecourt around Gilford. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this happens.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the owner's consent our engineers visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally routinely.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of the tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more frequently than people fear.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores.

Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to put up with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Still with the car?

Shut off is the way the car remains.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off.

This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than drivers expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Draining wrongly fuelled vehicles, Gilford and the rest of County Down, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
