# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Glan-Duar

If you have not fired up your engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor needs while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has stopped in Glan-Duar or the rest of Carmarthenshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Just one ring to us will be enough: our technicians can tell you what comes after this. Try it first.

## Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine for a few miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never start it. And having started, never trust it: that fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off also — switch it on and you usually prime your system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for precisely those components.

- Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance suggests — so never pour diesel on top to weaken it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to handle, and we'd rather drive to a tricky place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Heol y Dderi, switch your hazards on then keep it there.

- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode starting SA40 9, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.

- What went in, approximately how many litres, plus if your car has run — these three answers settle the whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Phone before you collect it. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and the vehicle at the nearest station ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is inert, and any damage came on the run in, when your pump was pulling diesel that petrol had weakened.

## At a forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

The work starts at the pump, typically. Quite often it ends there too.

We work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, and so if you are still at Ffordd Llanwnen Filling Station that is generally where the drain gets done.

Nowhere else but a garage can it be stopped with the engine still unrun.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the lines along with your tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians sort it out where your car sits. What settles it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Out from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you push the vehicle. Very much worth it.

Shifting the car four bays does not merit firing it.

## Glan-Duar plus the towns next to it

Glan-Duar is a residential suburb, and so our technicians head out to it and to the villages by it on the usual trips: Llanybydder, Ty-Mawr, Alltyblaca, Pencarreg and Aber-Giar.

Not on this list? That means nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and most towns around Carmarthenshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Near a border, or anywhere your phone can't find? Phone to enquire instead of assuming.

See our map for the area shown on this page.

Our technicians work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.

Each restart primes your lines and drags more petrol through the fuel filter and into your pump. So a misfuelled diesel Audi A4 on the zig-zags at the local primary school is a hassle, while the same car started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. A passer-by will advise you to move the vehicle out of that gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. Stay put, let people moan, then ring us.

## Roadside stops across Glan-Duar

Not everybody has a suitable spot to pull in.

Set off, then noticed? Ended up by the verge of B4337, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you sit by the motor or keep clear of it turns on whether sitting in it is sensible.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere handier and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled.

However tricky the location, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that's much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Chance the trip home from the pub in the village? No. It will fire up and it will drive off quite happily, which is the issue — a diesel on a thinned tank acts usually while wearing down the parts the fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Ford Focus then phone us.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

This is where your M4 comes in, under 25 miles away from Glan-Duar.

It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you ring. What our technicians bring alters.

## All about Glan-Duar

Glan-Duar is a suburban area situated on the banks of a river in Carmarthenshire, with an elevation of around 135 metres. Glan-Duar lies near the communities of Llanybydder, Ty-Mawr, and Alltyblaca, and is approximately 32 miles from Swansea. Glan-Duar has a population of around 946 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Glan-Duar is located in a region of south-west Wales, within commuting distance of larger urban centres.

## The call-out in Glan-Duar, step by step

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies alter what the work actually is.

- Out comes the contaminated fuel.

- Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later is not the thing that created the issue.

- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.

- It is started with new diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running properly.

Then it's ready to drive away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught early, permanent damage is very rare.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Glan-Duar is a separate problem

The issue is not the same, though the opening rule is — do not start it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection the fuel system relies on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and build-up.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Glan-Duar page. Both are ours to handle.

New spots are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical not careless: the smaller petrol nozzle goes into a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Topped up close to Rhyd-y-bont Chapel without thinking, in a diesel Citroen C3 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anybody notices, and distance is what decides how much petrol reaches the injectors.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Glan-Duar

One price would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

- This is the big one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Whether our van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range.

Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

That softness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the motor giving up — and with no warning for it, motors in that position typically get driven a second time before anyone phones. Do not. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Volkswagen Touran now sitting close to Llanybydder Sheep Mart. Switch the car off then call us.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Glan-Duar drivers

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Glan-Duar?

A good portion of this work gets done there, so yes.

Our technicians work at Murco and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run counts a lot more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres.

What decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been drawn through your fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

It is salvageable far more frequently than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate problem. So no.

The tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to put up with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Still with your car?

Keep it switched off.

Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Carmarthenshire and around Glan-Duar: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
