# Glynn: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Pause, and leave the engine off — not on, and not for a second to shift the vehicle.

The coming few minutes settle it more than anything else: petrol in a diesel that has not run usually comes down to emptying and cleaning, right there.

Below is the sequence from this point, wherever in Glynn you are.

## Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

In this order, all before everything else:

- Pull the keys out. Even your ignition by itself can prime the fuel system, pulling petrol out of the tank to exactly the components it damages, and so leave the car off entirely.

- Topping up with diesel seems like it dilutes the trouble. It doesn't: nothing comes out, and the tank just holds more of the same.

- Being seen comes first near moving traffic: put your hazards on, and only then think about everything else.

- The staff will generally help you roll it clear of the pump. Let them, and roll it by hand — never under your engine, even for a couple of yards.

- Hold on to your receipt: the fuel and roughly how much are written on it, and they are what our technicians ask about first.

If you were still driving when you realised, pull over somewhere sensible instead of pushing on for the services — on the M77, over 50 miles from Glynn, that means the next junction. Step one comes next.

## Has it run yet? The fork in each Glynn fuel drain

One answer is what everything after this point depends on.

If the engine hasn't run at all:

- The petrol remains in the tank, and just there.

- Where the vehicle stands is usually where this work happens: a drain, then a flush.

- This is the best spot to be in, and the reason stage one matters.

If it has been started, even for a second:

- From that tank, through the filter, into the lines: that's how far the petrol has got.

- Your high-pressure pump as well as the injectors see it too on a longer run.

- The job expands with the mileage — lines rinsed, filter seen to, sometimes more.

Diesel keeps your high-pressure pump and the injectors lubricated as it goes through them. Petrol gives them nothing, and that's why the line is drawn there.

In that tank, left alone, petrol does no harm.

Once it's pumped, petrol starts wearing whatever moves it.

## Glynn, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

Prepare a little, and the van finds you instead of circling.

- The best place to start is a postcode — one beginning BT40 3 — for where you have stopped.

- Wherever you have pulled up, the road's name helps — whether that's B738 or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside the local shops, for instance — and it is much easier to find.

- Tell us what the vehicle is — make, model — and confirm it is diesel.

- What was put in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a different job with its own page for Glynn, so tell us which.

- About how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.

- If it has run, how far and how hard — as well as whether it's run at all.

- Whose vehicle it is. Some hire or company contracts want the owner to authorise the work, and that is easier settled before our technicians arrive than after.

Then phone 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the vehicle is at home with going nowhere — works as well.

## Whilst you wait for a fuel drain around Glynn

Stick to these: kindly meant help causes the damage during the wait.

- Your safety comes before the car. Somewhere exposed? Get away from the traffic then wait away from it. Safe where it is? Wait with it.

- A kind passer-by doesn't crank it. Nor does anyone wanting to check it still does the trick, or rolling it a few yards.

- None of it takes that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not something from your boot. So no additives.

- No home-made clearing. Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is risky, and it leaves your fuel that has by now gone beyond that tank.

- Keep your ignition off — the windows and the radio too.

## When the van gets there: your fuel drain, step by step

- Fuel, quantity, whether it's run: the replies set the job, and that's why you get a quote after them rather than before.

- Then your tank is drained, and the contaminated fuel comes out.

- If it ran, your lines are carrying petrol that has moved beyond the tank — so they're cleaned.

- Then the fuel filter: swapped where there's a workable one, cleared where there is not.

- Fresh diesel in, and the system primed.

- The start. With clean diesel in and your system primed, it is started and checked to be sure it runs properly.

The vehicle has clean diesel running through it before we leave.

It is very uncommon for a vehicle caught early to be left with long-term damage, and normal use starts again at once.

## Once your fuel drain is done: driving in Glynn once more

- Nothing unusual is needed after a start with clean diesel — normal driving is all.

- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or the throttle stumbling: pull over and call us back.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was done, and so hold on to your paperwork.

- Next time, trust the pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.

## About Glynn, briefly

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're somewhere hard to explain or near a boundary.

## Ring, and leave it off — petrol in a diesel across County Antrim

Petrol in Diesel takes it from there — on your drive, at the roadside, on the forecourt — once you have done stage one: keys out, engine off, receipt in your pocket.
