# What Happens Now: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Grain

Whatever you do, never switch your motor on, even briefly, to move it. Pause; leave the vehicle off.

Petrol in a diesel that has not been run is normally a drain plus a flush, done where your vehicle stands, and what happens in the coming few minutes determines that more than anything else.

Here's the order of things from here, anywhere you are in Grain.

## Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

First, the following — following this sequence.

- Take your keys out. Even your ignition by itself can prime the system, drawing petrol out of the tank to precisely the components it harms, and so leave it alone entirely.

- A fuller tank of the same mix is all adding diesel leaves you, because it takes out nothing. So no extra diesel.

- Visibility comes first near moving traffic: put your hazards on, and only then deal with everything else.

- The staff will normally help you roll it clear of the petrol pump. Ask, then roll it by hand — never under the engine, even for a few yards.

- The first question you will be asked is which fuel went in and about how much — and the till receipt shows both. Hold on to it.

Still on the move when you realised? Come off the M2 at the next exit if that's where you are, under 10 miles from Grain, and pull over somewhere sensible and not pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

## The fork in each Grain fuel drain: has it run yet?

Everything after this point rests on one answer.

Engine never run at all?

- The petrol remains in your tank, and just there.

- A drain and flush, on the spot, is usually all of that.

- This is as good as it gets — which is the entire point of step one.

If it has been started, even for a second:

- The lines and the fuel filter already hold petrol pulled out of that tank.

- On a bigger run it has reached your high-pressure pump as well as the injectors.

- Mileage is what makes it a larger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

The reason the line falls there: diesel protects your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't.

In the tank, left alone, petrol does no harm.

Move the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts that move it.

## Calling about petrol in a diesel from Grain: what to have ready

Prepare a little, and the van finds you instead of circling.

- The ideal start is a postcode — one starting ME3 0 — for where you have stopped.

- A road name is a help: Pannell Road, say, or whichever street you have stopped in. A car park works too.

- What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, so mention the landmark — like the one at Tesco.

- Tell us what your vehicle is — make, model — and confirm it is diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Grain page.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from your receipt — either gives us how much.

- Has it run? If so, tell us how far it got, and the way it was driven.

- Whose motor it is. Some hire or company agreements want the owner to approve the work, and that is quicker settled before we turn up than after.

Call 0333 366 0103 then. Email works as well if it can wait, with your car left at home, going nowhere.

## While you wait for a fuel drain in Grain

Hold to these: kindly meant help does the damage during the wait.

- Your safety comes before the vehicle. Somewhere dangerous? Get clear of the traffic and wait away from it. Fine where it stands? Stay with it.

- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the car a couple of yards.

- Something from your boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes the petrol.

- Clearing it yourself is out: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond that tank stays put regardless.

- Not for your radio, not for your windows: the ignition stays off.

## When the van arrives: the fuel drain, step by step

- Fuel, quantity, whether it has run: those answers set the job, and that's why you get a price after them rather than before.

- Then the tank is emptied, and the polluted fuel comes out.

- Your lines are flushed. If it ran, that petrol has moved beyond the tank, and your lines are carrying it.

- Cleaned, or changed if your car has a serviceable one: the filter is dealt with next.

- Fresh diesel goes in, then the fuel system is primed.

- Starting it. After the fuel system is bled with fresh diesel, we fire it up and check it runs correctly.

Your car has new diesel running through it before our engineers head off.

Permanent damage is very rare if it has been noticed quickly, so the vehicle can go right back to normal driving.

## After the fuel drain: back on the road around Grain

- Drive normally. There's nothing special to do after it has been started on fresh fuel.

- Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under your throttle means pull over then ring us back.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, and so hold on to your paperwork.

- Next time, check the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
