# Grange Fell: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over Grange Fell and the remainder of Cumbria. The very first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When your engine has not run and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much went in.

Contact us before everything else happens, and you will see what comes from there.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Never start it — and do not trust it if it starts. This is the bit people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel typically just will not run, so the person stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, ticks over and drives off just fine for several miles. It's not okay. It is eating into that fuel system whenever you drive.

- Leave the ignition alone also. Diesel has two jobs: it combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Switching the ignition on is often all it takes to prime your system, which draws the petrol out of your tank and into precisely those parts.

- Do not add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it only gives you a larger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has never moved is the easiest one to sort out, and we'd rather get to an awkward location than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Beech Road, turn the hazards on then leave the vehicle there.

- Keep your position prepared before you call. A postcode that starts LA11 6 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van turning up and a van circling.

- Three answers shape the full visit: the fuel you tipped in, the ballpark quantity involved, plus if anything has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

The journey back would roughly double it, for no gain at all. One commute has already sent a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of that Volkswagen Golf. So keep it where it is. Ring us from the platform if that's simpler — no one needs you hovering over the vehicle at Grange-Over-Sands whilst our technicians work, and tonight beats finding out on Monday.

## Draining petrol from a diesel on a forecourt

A big chunk of the job ends up done at the pump, as that is where it usually begins.

Still at BP? Then that is generally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the station.

A forecourt is the single spot the mistake gets caught before the motor has fired.

Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past the tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the staff help you move the car. Worth doing.

Moving the car four bays doesn't justify starting the motor.

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at gentle throttle draws little diesel. Petrol into a diesel Ford Focus somewhere in Grange Fell, a boot loaded with shopping, and you sat at Co-op Food — phone. Leaving the space is not worth a restart. That tank gets drained where it stands, your fuel lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and you drive away.

## Grange Fell and the areas near it

As a residential suburb, Grange Fell has a frequent call, and its neighbours round about come along on that same journey: Grange-over-Sands and Eden Mount, Kents Bank and Allithwaite, Cartmel.

There are separate pages for nearly all locations around Cumbria, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being left off that list tells you nothing whatsoever about if we come.

On a border, or anywhere a satnav struggles with? Phone to enquire instead of presuming.

The patch this page includes is on our map.

Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of it is territory our technicians work on, and none of that asks your car to travel to us.

Hazards on. Engine off. Call us. It is twenty to nine at the gates of Grange CofE Primary School, you are late, and your receipt says unleaded — and though three miles in your Peugeot 3008 seems like nothing, fuel is delivered to demand, and a frantic run needs plenty of that.

## Grange Fell: stuck where you parked

Not everyone has a chance to pull in anywhere safe.

Set off, then realised? Finished up along the verge beside Higher Grange, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Whether you wait beside your car or step clear of it turns on if being in it seems wise.

Never fire up your engine to limp it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the fuel system.

However tricky the spot, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for the car than pressing on.

## Driven it already? Pull over, then check this

Here is where your M6 counts, under 10 miles away from Grange Fell.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Long drive? Anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in the van.

Your pump is not turning, so whatever the diesel Audi A3 did on the way to Cox's Corner, none of it is going on now. Nothing gets worse while it waits. Take your time over this — but do not drive the vehicle home to buy any.

## Grange Fell itself

Grange Fell is a suburban area situated on the coast of Cumbria, near the town of Grange-over-Sands. Grange Fell has a relatively low elevation of 89 metres and is located approximately 10.9 miles from Lancaster. Grange Fell is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its residential nature. Grange Fell is also part of a larger area that includes nearby places such as Eden Mount and Kents Bank.

## The visit in Grange Fell, step by step

- The responses change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of that, and whether your engine has run.

- Our engineers drain your tank of the tainted fuel.

- What is remaining in your system should not be what caused the problem, so your fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleaned.

- The system gets bled, on clean diesel.

- It's run with new diesel in it, and our engineers check that it is running properly.

That has it ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been caught quickly, and since all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

## Grange Fell AdBlue removal is a different problem

The problem isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol thins your diesel and removes the protection the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal around Grange Fell has its own page with the full story — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Grange Fell

One price wouldn't be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much the tank holds.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

Purged, not drained — that is what a diesel Kia Sportage which got as far as Hardcragg Hall needs. Running a diesel puts the mixture into the filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail, none of which empties with the tank, so by now your tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Grange Fell drivers

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Grange Fell?

A large part of this work takes place there, so yes.

We work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable much more frequently than motorists fear.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores.

Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Standing next to it?

Don't turn the engine on again.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Grange Fell and across Cumbria.
