# The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Grange

Not for a second, and not to move it: the engine remains off. Stop there.

Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is usually a drain and a flush, done where the vehicle sits, and what happens in the coming few minutes decides that far more than anything else.

Here's the order of things from here, wherever you are in Grange.

## Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

Before anything else, the following — in this sequence.

- Keys out of the ignition. Switching your ignition on can be enough to prime your fuel system, while priming pulls petrol out of the tank toward the parts it damages. Keep the car off altogether.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of that petrol — it just makes you with extra of the same blend.

- Hazard lights on. If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, make the car simple to see before you do anything else.

- However short the way, starting it to move it is the mistake. On a forecourt, roll the car clear of the pump by hand instead, then ask the staff to lend a hand.

- Which fuel, and roughly how much? The receipt answers that, and that is where our questions start. Don't bin it.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next exit if you are on the M180, under 15 miles from Grange, and pull over somewhere sensible — not at the services farther on. Step one starts after that.

## The fork in each Grange fuel drain: has it run yet?

Everything after this stage rests on one answer.

If it has not once been started:

- The petrol is still in that tank and nowhere else.

- The work is a simple drain and a flush, usually done where the vehicle is.

- No position is better, and it is why the first stage counts so much.

Motor run, however for a moment?

- Some petrol has left your tank already, gone through the fuel filter, and reached your lines.

- Run it farther and the petrol reaches your injectors, having passed through the fuel pump first.

- The further it went, the larger this job — your lines, the filter, and now and then more besides.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, oiling your pump and injectors as it flows through, which is why the line sits where it does.

In that tank, sitting still, petrol does no harm.

As soon as it is pumped, petrol starts wearing whatever moves it.

## Calling about petrol in a diesel from Grange: what to have ready

A van that circles versus a technician that finds you: a little preparation is the difference.

- The ideal start is a postcode — one beginning DN34 5 — for where you have stopped.

- A road name is a help: Eastern Inway, say, or whichever street you've stopped in. A car park does the trick too.

- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside One Stop, for instance — and it is much easier to find.

- That it's a diesel, along with the make and model of your vehicle.

- Tell us which got in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a different job, with a page of its own for Grange.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on your receipt — whichever tells us how much.

- Whether it's run. Then if it has, how far plus how heavily.

- Hire or company car? Some agreements need the owner's go-ahead for the work, and sorting it before our technicians get there is faster than after.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not urgent, your car parked at home with nowhere to be? Then will do as well.

## Grange fuel drain on its way? While you wait

The wait is where kindly meant help does the harm. Stick to these.

- Stay with your car if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.

- Nobody — however helpful — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to move the vehicle a short way.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from the boot — none of it gets the petrol back out.

- Draining it yourself is out: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond your tank stays where it is all the same.

- The ignition remains off. Even for your radio or your windows.

## When our van arrives: your fuel drain, step by step

- Three questions. What was put in, how much, and if it's run. Those answers set the job, which is why our quote comes after them and not before.

- Then your tank is emptied, and the polluted fuel is taken out.

- If it ran, the lines are holding petrol that has shifted beyond the tank — so they are flushed.

- The filter is sorted. Cleared, or swapped where your car has a serviceable one.

- Bleeding your system follows after clean diesel is in.

- The start. With new diesel in and your system primed, it is started and checked to be sure it runs correctly.

Only once it's running on new diesel do our engineers leave.

Permanent damage is very rare if it has been caught early, so the car can go right back to normal use.

## After your fuel drain: back on the road in Grange

- Nothing unusual is needed after a start with clean diesel — ordinary driving will do.

- Pull over and ring us back if anything seems wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- Hold on to your documents. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.

- Read the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
