# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Grasswell

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Grasswell and the remainder of Tyne and Wear. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While the motor has not turned over and the petrol is still inside your tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Ring us so our engineers will show you what comes from here before you attempt much else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine enough for a couple of miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not crank it. And if started, don't trust it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it protects — that injection pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be too: switching it on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay put if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Gertrude Street, anywhere — an awkward location for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a motor that never moved.

- Keep your position prepared before you phone. A postcode that starts DH4 4 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between the van arriving and a van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what was put in, approximately how many litres, plus if the engine has fired. Those three answers settle your whole call-out.

How far you drove is what our technicians ask about, not how long the motor has been stood — and this is why. Diesel does two jobs on its way through the engine: it combusts, and before burning it protects its high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a fast fill on the way in, the penny dropping close to eleven, and a diesel Renault Clio left at Chester-Le-Street since quarter past eight means those few miles were done with the pump labouring on a fuel drained of a great deal of its protection. Phone us and keep the car exactly where it is.

## At a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

The work kicks off at a pump, typically. Often enough the work finishes at one too.

If you're still on the forecourt at JET, that is usually where this drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.

Before your engine has run — a forecourt is the one place this gets caught.

Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the keys.

Roll the vehicle out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Cranking it just for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

The difficult part is the bay, not your fuel. Motors either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height barrier on the way in that decides whether our van can get to you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one outside Tesco, mention how much room there is around you and which way round your car is. Those our technicians cover frequently. Should there be no space to work alongside your diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, it gets shifted with the motor off, and not out of fussiness over a few seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of the mix exits your tank for your pump, and two shunts into a better space have gradually made a worse job of what was simply a motor standing still.

## Can we serve your corner of Grasswell?

As a residential suburb, Grasswell has a frequent call, while its neighbours close by come with it on the same run: Sunniside and Burnside, Newbottle and Houghton-le-Spring, Sedgeletch.

If yours is not on this list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are pages for the majority of towns around Tyne and Wear, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours.

On the border, or anywhere your phone misreads? Call us to enquire instead of presuming.

Look at the map for the patch covered on this page.

The car doesn't need to come to us. We operate over every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Hazards on. Motor off. Call us. It's twenty to nine by Newbottle Primary Academy, you are late, and your receipt reads unleaded — and although three miles in your Skoda Octavia seems like nothing, fuel is metered on demand, and a hurried drive demands plenty of that.

## Stranded at the kerbside around Grasswell

Not everyone finds a safe place to stop.

A normal call for us and not an unusual one: noticed after setting off, landed along the verge beside Chester Street or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Safe there? Sit beside it. Not fine? Get out and clear of it.

Never restart your engine to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into your fuel system.

Driving on does the car far more harm than our van driving out to an inconvenient location, and that's no problem for us.

Leave it there overnight. Ring us first thing. Nothing about a diesel BMW 3 Series standing in the parking area by The Sun worsens as it sits, tank of petrol or not, and the job remains a simple one right up until the moment it gets taken home. The query our technicians bring is about the trip there: a cold engine over a short distance is where petrol combusts least well, and whatever fails to burn can get past the rings into the engine oil.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where the local A1(M) comes in, under 3 miles away from Grasswell.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes rough, and there may be smoke.

Take the next junction that is sensible, pull up there, and don't restart the car to reposition.

Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you phone. What we bring alters.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the tightly fitted components that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel Peugeot 308 drove, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and flat on the way back is how that trip to Russell Foster 7 Pitches went, then, and that tank is where to look. Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off and ring us.

## A bit about Grasswell

Grasswell is a suburban area located inland in Tyne and Wear, with an elevation of 66 metres above sea level. Grasswell sits approximately 5 miles west of Sunderland and is surrounded by nearby places such as Sunniside, Burnside, and Newbottle. Grasswell has a population of around 4222 people and is characterised by predominantly semi-detached housing. Grasswell is situated in the North East region of England, about 238 miles north of London.

## What our technicians do when we get to you around Grasswell

- Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- That tank is drained of everything.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.

- Our engineers pour fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- Our technicians start the engine and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

That has it ready to set off.

There is no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is spotted soon, lasting damage is very rare.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Grasswell?

The fault is not the same, though the first rule is — don't fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and build-up in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Grasswell page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Grasswell

Our technicians can't put one price on this page truthfully, since the job is not one job. What changes it:

- This is the big one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much the tank holds.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and if a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Grasswell motorists

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Grasswell?

A fair portion of this work happens there, so yes.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

What decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving moves the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it does not restore what petrol has diluted.

Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is the car still with you?

Keep the car shut off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then let the vehicle stay that way.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Grasswell and across Tyne and Wear.
